NFL Game Summary - Oakland at Kansas City|
(Saturday, December 24th)
Final Score: Oakland 16, Kansas City 13 (OT)
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Sebastian Janikowski kicked three field
goals, including the 36-yard game-winning boot in overtime, as Oakland topped
Kansas City, 16-13, at Arrowhead Stadium.
Carson Palmer threw for 237 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted twice
on 16-of-26 passes for the Raiders (8-7), who moved into a tie atop the AFC
West standings with Denver, after the Broncos were routed in Buffalo.
"I keep telling you this team is not going to quit," crowed Raiders head
coach Hue Jackson. "I, sometimes, get all the things that are said, 'left for
dead,' or we're not this or we're not that. We're not perfect by no stretch
of the imagination. I understand that, but we are a group of men that will
fight and that will keep playing and we're going to play this thing out till
Denarius Moore finished with 94 yards and a score on four receptions, while
Michael Bush added 70 yards on 23 carries.
Oakland hosts San Diego -- which lost at Detroit -- in its season finale
next Sunday. The Raiders need to win and also have the Broncos lose at home to
the Chiefs in order to capture the AFC West.
Kyle Orton completed 21-of-36 passes for 300 yards, one TD and two picks for
the Chiefs (6-9), who couldn't sustain momentum from knocking off the
previously-unbeaten Packers last week.
Dwayne Bowe registered the game-tying touchdown late in the fourth, part of an
80-yard, six-reception contest. Kansas City was eliminated from playoff
contention with the setback.
The Raiders won the coin toss and elected to receive to begin the extra
period, and Palmer found Darrius Heyward-Bey for 53 yards to the Chiefs' 23 on
first down. Michael Bush ran on consecutive downs for a total of five yards
before Janikowski split the uprights.
"Just a great call at a great time in the game," Palmer said of the key
completion. "The protection was flawless. The route was great. Just a great
call at the right time."
Bryan McCann took the opening kickoff 91 yards to the KC 14, and Janikowski
capped the brief drive by connecting from 28 yards out for a 3-0 Raiders edge.
Palmer was picked off by Derrick Johnson on Oakland's ensuing possession, and
Ryan Succop countered from 23 yards away.
Just after the midway point of the second quarter, Oakland reached the Kansas
City 36 and Janikowski lined up for a 53-yard attempt. But on the fake, which
apparently yielded a go-ahead touchdown, holder Shane Lechler was whistled for
a delay of game penalty. Janikowski then hit the crossbar on a 59-yard try.
Succop's 49-yard attempt in the final seconds of the half was blocked and it
was 3-3 at the break.
Oakland went up 10-3 when Moore ran under a Palmer pass and raced 61 yards to
the end zone on its first series of the second half.
Kansas City reached the two on its next drive, but after an incompletion on
3rd-and-goal, Succop made a 20-yarder.
Late in the fourth, the Raiders held Jackie Battle on a 4th-and-1 from the
Chiefs' 36. Janikowski added a 31-yarder with 2:57 remaining to put the
Raiders up 13-6 to end a 30-yard drive, but Orton found Bowe for a three-yard
score with 1:02 left to tie the game.
Oakland went three-and-out, then KC moved from its own 33 to the Raiders' 31
on two quick completions to Bowe and Terrance Copper. Succop lined up for a
49-yard attempt which was blocked as time expired.
"We didn't play well enough today in all phases. We made mistakes that cost
us basically," said Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel. "We had an opportunity to
put points on the board that there at the half and we weren't where we needed
to be at the half to get points on the board. We turned the ball over a couple
times. In the NFL, it's hard to win when you do those kind of things."
Oakland, which has won four of the last six meetings overall against Kansas
City, has taken five straight at Arrowhead...Heyward-Bey ended with 70 yards
on four grabs...Battle gained 56 yards on 11 carries...Dexter McCluster posted
89 yards on five receptions for the Chiefs, who outgained the Raiders by a
435-308 margin in the loss.
