(Sunday, October 24th)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 23, Miami 22
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Jeff Reed converted an 18-yard field goal with
2:26 remaining in regulation to lift the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 23-22
victory over the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium.
Reed's go-ahead kick followed a complicated ruling on a Ben Roethlisberger
fumble that enabled the Steelers to retain possession. Roethlisberger
completed 19-of-27 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns for Pittsburgh
(5-1), which has won five straight against Miami.
"We weren't very good today, but [Miami] had a lot to do with that," Steelers
head coach Mile Tomlin said. "To the credit of our men, though, they made the
necessary plays to get out of a hostile environment with a win."
Chad Henne threw for 257 yards and a touchdown on 23-of-36 efficiency for the
Dolphins (3-3), who have lost all three games at home.
Dan Carpenter made all five of his field goal attempts, the last one -- a 40-
yarder -- gave the Dolphins a 22-20 lead with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Emmanuel Sanders returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards, setting Pittsburgh up
at the Miami 48-yard line. Roethlisberger led the Steelers to the two, where
on third down he was ruled to have scored a touchdown on a quarterback
draw despite losing the football.
Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano challenged the play, which was overturned
after a lengthy video review. Replays showed that Miami safety Chris Clemons
dislodged the ball before Roethlisberger reached the goal line. However, there
was no clear evidence of who recovered the fumble in the end zone, allowing
the Steelers to keep the ball.
"[The official] told me our guy came up with the football in the end zone and
handed him the ball, but he didn't know who recovered. It was a scrum in other
words and they couldn't see who recovered the ball," Sparano said.
Pittsburgh then prevailed after the Dolphins turned the ball over on downs.
It was a troubling start for the Steelers, who committed a pair of early
turnovers. Sanders fumbled on the game's opening kickoff and Roethlisberger
fumbled on Pittsburgh's third play from scrimmage, resulting in excellent
field position for Miami. Both times, however, the Dolphins were forced to
settled for a Carpenter field goal (39 and 23 yards).
The Steelers moved ahead in the second quarter. Reed kicked a 22-yard field
goal on the second play of the stanza, then Roethlisberger transformed a Brian
Hartline fumble into a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward, who caught the
ball near the right sideline, shed one defender and eluded another tackle
attempt before spinning into the end zone for a 10-6 Pittsburgh lead.
Henne led the Dolphins to the Pittsburgh four on their next drive, and
Carpenter booted a 22-yarder. After a 37-yard return by Sanders on the
subsequent kickoff, Roethlisberger hit the speedy Mike Wallace in stride for a
Miami then put together a nine-play drive that originated from its own 20.
Henne hooked up with Davone Bess for a 26-yard touchdown, trimming the
Dolphins' deficit to 17-16 with 1:50 remaining in the first half.
Reed and Carpenter exchanged field goals in the third quarter.
