Brees, Kuechly headline NFC's best for Week 10
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly and St. Louis Rams wideout/kick returner Tavon Austin were named the NFC's top players for Week 10 of the NFL season.
Brees fueled his club's 49-17 Sunday night demolition of the Dallas Cowboys by completing 34-of-41 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns -- his 15th career game throwing as many, tying Tom Brady for the NFL record -- en route to a 139.0 passer rating.
The Purdue product, who has thrown at least two TD passes in each of his last 21 home games, notched his 18th career weekly award and second this season.
Kuechly earned top defensive honors by contributing a game-best 11 tackles and one sack in Carolina's narrow 10-9 victory in San Francisco.
The Panthers held the Niners to 151 yards of total offense, recorded six sacks and forced a pair of turnovers thanks to the Boston College product, who earned his second career weekly award.
Austin stoked the fires of the Rams' offense in a 38-8 thrashing of the Indianapolis Colts and was granted the special teams honor. He recorded a 98- yard punt return for a touchdown, then added receiving scores of 57 and 81 yards, respectively, in the rout.
The West Virginia product became the first Rams rookie returner to take special-teams honors since Eddie Kennison in 1996, and joined both Gale Sayers and Randy Moss as the only rookies in NFL history to post three TDs of 50-or- more yards in one game.
