NBA Game Summary - Chicago at Utah
(Monday, November 25th)
Final Score: Utah 89, Chicago 83 (OT)
Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Marvin Williams scored 17 points with nine rebounds while Richard Jefferson and Gordon Heyward scored 15 points apiece as the Utah Jazz defeated the Chicago Bulls, 89-83, in overtime on Monday night.
Rookie Trey Burke scored 14 points, and none were bigger than his 3-pointer in overtime that put the Jazz up 83-78.
Utah, which snapped a six-game skid, squandered a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter as the Bulls locked down on defense and forced the extra stanza. Both teams had chances to win it in their final possession of regulation but neither connected on their attempts.
Carlos Boozer had a game-high 26 points with 16 rebounds and Luol Deng also chipped in with a double-double, scoring 24 points with 10 boards.
"Richard and Marvin I thought did a tremendous job of just keeping everybody going and focused on what we needed to do, to close the game out," said Utah head coach Tyrone Corbin.
The Bulls learned earlier in the day that they would once again be without star point guard Derrick Rose for the remainder of the season. Rose underwent surgery on Monday for a meniscus tear in his right knee.
Chicago, losers in four straight, roared back to take its first lead since early in the first quarter when Tony Snell knocked down two free throws to give the Bulls 69-68 advantage midway through the fourth quarter. The two teams then locked in for a seesaw affair after that.
Deng made a free throw with 52.2 seconds left in the fourth to give Chicago a 77-75 lead. Jefferson answered with a three-point play eight seconds later.
Jefferson caught a pass from Heyward, got bumped by Dunleavy as he drove to the basket, and received continuation from the refs as he hit the running jumper. His free throw put the Jazz up 78-77.
Joakim Noah was fouled at the other end and made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game with 32.2 ticks remaining.
After a pair of free throws from Jefferson a minute into overtime broke the tie, Burke came off a Williams pick and drilled a trey at the top of the key with 3:11 to play.
Utah iced it when Heyward came off a Jeremy Evans pick, and Evans rolled to the basket to find a lob from Heyward that he slammed home to give the Jazz an 85-78 lead at 1:25 remaining.
"We struggled to score early," said Chicago head coach Tom Thibodeau. "We fought to get out of the hole. We were in position to win down the stretch and didn't get it done."
The Jazz built a 23-18 lead after one quarter and proceeded to hold the Bulls to 14 points in the second stanza for a 40-32 advantage at the break.
The 32 points was a season-low for Chicago in a half.
