NBA Game Summary - LA Lakers at Phoenix
(Wednesday, January 15th)
Final Score: Phoenix 121, LA Lakers 114
Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerald Green poured in 28 points with seven rebounds to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 121-114 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Markieff Morris scored 24 points, Channing Frye had 20, and Goran Dragic recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who have won four straight over LA. P.J. Tucker netted 15 points in the win.
"I just tried not to take as many 3-pointers as I normally do," Green said of his performance. "We just tried to limit all the mistakes."
Pau Gasol tallied 24 points with nine rebounds and five assists for Los Angeles, which has lost seven straight on the road and six straight overall.
Wesley Johnson contributed 22 points and Chris Kaman added 18 points off the bench. Kendall Marshall deposited a double-double with 10 points and 13 assists in the setback.
"We're still trying to figure things out," Marshall admitted. "Hopefully we can cut down on a lot of things that we're doing wrong and it will turn into wins and we can get this ball rolling."
Gasol made a layup to stake LA to a slim 74-73 lead before the Suns used an 8-0 sprint to take the lead. Green opened the run with six straight points and Markieff Morris' jumper capped it with 3:34 left in the third.
Johnson's 3-pointer with 19.9 seconds left in the frame pulled the Lakers within six, 88-82, heading into the fourth.
Johnson tied the game at 91 early in the fourth with a three, but a 9-0 run from Phoenix shortly thereafter opened it up for the hosts.
Ish Smith closed the sequence with a layup off a steal from Gasol right after he crossed over Marshall for a two-point basket to help the Suns to a 102-93 lead.
LA got as close as six following a Johnson dunk with 4:19 remaining, but the Suns would run off four straight to push the lead to 115-105.
The Lakers hung around, though, as Gasol followed a Jodie Meeks dunk with a three-point play to cut the lead in half with a minute to play.
After a few offensive rebounds from Phoenix, Markieff Morris was fouled and made a pair at the line with 33.9 seconds left that sealed it for Phoenix.
Earlier, there were fisticuffs between LA's Nick Young and Alex Len of Phoenix midway through the second quarter. Young drove to the cup and Len fouled him, with the former falling hard to the floor.
A fracas ensued with Young shoving Len before Morris twins coming to their teammates aid, standing in between the two players to keep the situation at bay. Young then swiped at Dragic and was immediately ejected along with Len, whose foul was ruled a flagrant-2.
Los Angeles owned a slim 58-54 lead at the break.
