NBA Game Summary - Memphis at LA Clippers
(Monday, November 18th)
Final Score: Memphis 106, LA Clippers 102
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Conley netted eight of his 15 points in a crucial stretch late in the fourth quarter as the Memphis Grizzlies stayed perfect on their road trip with a 106-102 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers from Staples Center.
Zach Randolph turned in a 26-point, 15-rebound effort for Memphis, which improved to 3-0 on its current four-game California road trip after dropping the first three road tests of the season. The swing wraps up on Wednesday at Golden State.
Marc Gasol tallied 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the triumph. Kosta Koufos made all five of his shots for 10 points for Memphis, which played most of the game after Tony Allen was ejected for kicking LA point guard Chris Paul in the face.
"I accidentally kicked him in the head, but I'm pretty sure he knows it's accidental and that isn't my style of play," Allen said.
Paul was surprised Allen was ejected.
"I know Tony. He didn't do it on purpose," he said.
Paul became the first player since Magic Johnson to begin the season with 11 straight 10-point, 10-assist double-doubles and finished a rebound shy of a triple-double in defeat. Paul registered 18 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.
Blake Griffin chimed in with 23 points and 11 rebounds while DeAndre Jordan grabbed 16 boards.
Memphis held a 90-88 lead midway through the fourth when Conley stepped up with a deep 3-pointer and a five-point advantage. He then hit jumpers on the front and back end of an 8-0 run that boosted the Grizzlies to a 101-91 lead with 1:51 left.
The Clippers did not lay down, as Jordan came back with two quick buckets at the rim and J.J. Redick made a pair of free throws to pull the home team within four with a half-minute remaining.
Randolph pushed the lead back to six twice, with two foul shots with 28.6 seconds and a layup on a Gasol feed with 15.8. Jamal Crawford's desperation 3 with less than two seconds remaining would not be a factor.
Earlier, the Grizzlies led by 10 late in the first period when Allen was handed a Flagrant 2 for his inadvertent kick to Paul's face. Paul came back with four quick points but Randolph ended the period with six of his own for a 29-20 lead.
Memphis held a slim margin for the duration of the second quarter and led by one at halftime, 52-51, after Jared Dudley's jumper from 19 feet beat the buzzer.
The loss snapped a four-game LA winning streak ... This was the 100th straight home sellout for the Clippers ... Redick and Matt Barnes scored 12 points apiece ... LA shot just 7-for-23 from behind the arc ... Memphis hit 48.1 percent of its shots, while the Clippers shot at just a 39.5 percent clip.
