NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Detroit|
(Friday, February 21st)
Final Score: Detroit 115, Atlanta 107
Auburn Hills, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Greg Monroe led six Detroit players in
double figures as the Pistons took down the injury-plagued Atlanta Hawks,
115-107, on Friday.
Monroe had a 22-point, 15-rebound performance, while Andre Drummond and Kyle
Singler both contributed 20 points. Singler made 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to
help solidify the win.
"Our guys went out in the second half and made them miss. I'll give our guys
credit. They showed a lot of guts and determination," said Pistons interim
head coach John Loyer. "You can go out there and kind of play hard, but not
play well. Our guys played hard and played well."
Brandon Jennings poured in all 12 of his points in the third and dished out 14
assists for the Pistons, who snapped a three-game skid.
Paul Millsap had a game-high 23 points with eight boards and four assists for
Atlanta. Shelvin Mack scored a career-high 21 and Mike Scott chipped in 20
points off the bench in Atlanta's eighth straight loss.
Jeff Teague was the latest Hawk to go down after he sprained his left ankle in
Wednesday's 114-97 loss to Washington. Atlanta was already without Al Horford
(pectoral muscle), Pero Antic (ankle) and Gustavo Ayon, who missed a second
straight game with a shoulder injury.
Scott and Rodney Stuckey battled coming out at the start of the second. Both
players supplied the first six points for their respective teams to make it a
28-25 game in a two-minute span.
Elton Brand followed Mack's alley oop with a dunk of his own to extend
Atlanta's lead to 10 halfway through the frame. The Hawks ended the half by
making 13 of their 14 final shots.
Josh Smith made six straight points three minutes into the third to cut the
deficit down to 65-58. His last four points came on alley oops that were both
assisted by Jennings.
The Pistons tied the game after Scott fouled Jennings from beyond the arc and
Jennings knocked down all three from the line. Millsap responded with two
triples to restore Atlanta's lead to 77-71 at 4:54. Jennings kickstarted an
11-1 run with two treys and nine points to give Detroit an 82-79 advantage
with two minutes left in the third.
"We got outscored in the third quarter, 34-20. We will have to go back and
look at the film, but you can't give up 34 points in the quarter," said Hawks
head coach Mike Budenholzer. "You have to give Detroit a lot of credit.
Different guys stepped and made plays."
Detroit sported an 86-83 lead heading into the final 12. Drummond intercepted
Kyle Korver and went down the court to throw down a thunderous slam over Brand
to make it 93-88 with 10 minutes to go.
Scott drained a three and Lou Williams smoothly stripped Will Bynum of the
ball and went down the court for an uncontested layup to tie the game at 98
with just under six left.
After Drummond missed a pair of free throws, Williams stole the ball off Smith
and Scott went in for a layup. He then hit a jumper to tie the game back at
102. Singler hit two triples as the hosts went on an 11-3 run in the final two
minutes to seal the victory.
Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak to Atlanta ... Atlanta lost their
fifth straight road game ... Korver extended his NBA-record streak of games
with a three-pointer to 123 consecutive games ... On Thursday, Atlanta
acquired forward Antawn Jamison from the Clippers in exchange for the rights
to shooting guard Cenk Akyol. Prior to the game, the Hawks waived him and
signed forward Cartier Martin for the remainder of the season.
