Washington Wizards 2014 Draft Preview

Draft picks: 2nd round (46th overall)

By Jim Brighters, NBA Editor

( - The Washington Wizards advanced further in the playoffs than expected, but they mortgaged a bit of their future to get to that point.

Washington traded its first-round pick this year to the Phoenix Suns for center Marcin Gortat. He was sensational in the playoffs, so one can understand the trade, although Gortat is a free agent this summer. The Wiz would like to re-sign him.

So, the Wizards don't have a first-round pick, but do have needs. Trevor Ariza is a free agent and he played a huge role for Washington in the postseason. His defense and 3-point shooting were vital to the Wizards' success.

At 46, the Wizards can do almost anything. They have needs, despite being a team on the rise. Their amazing backcourt of All-Star John Wall and Bradley Beal, need capable backups, and if Ariza or Gortat bolt, both players need to be replaced.

The Wizards have to hope last year's No. 3 overall pick, Otto Porter, develops. He was injured early in the preseason and truthfully, never appeared to catch up.
