| NOTES: |
|
The Budweiser Shootout at Daytona, a pre-season, non-points event,
now includes a collection of the sport's top drivers and top performers at
Daytona. Eligibility is based on the 25 drivers who finished in the top 25 in
drivers points in 2011, past Budweiser Shootout winners and past Daytona points
race winners of the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400. This season, a total of 33
drivers are eligible to compete, however 25 are scheduled to race.
Since 2009, the Budweiser Shootout has been run in two segments, with the
first at 25 laps, and the second a 50-lap sprint for the win. That's 187.5
miles on the track's high-banked, 2.5-mile layout. Following the first
segment, a 10-minute "pit stop" gives crews the opportunity to make normal
adjustments to their cars. That means tweaks they would do on a normal pit
stop during a regular Sprint Cup Series event. Following the 10-minute "pit
stop", the event's second segment includes a 50-lap sprint for the win.
Anheuser-Busch and its Budweiser brand has sponsored the race at Daytona
International Speedway since 1979. Called the Busch Clash until 1998, the name
was changed to the Bud Shootout. Renamed the Budweiser Shootout for the 2001
edition, the event just underwent the most significant changes in the format
and eligibility since the inception of the event in '79. During the 33 years
of the event, there have been 19 different winners.
Several drivers will be making their first appearances with new teams including
Clint Bowyer with Michael Waltrip Racing, Kasey Kahne with Hendrick
Motorsports, Kurt Busch with Phoenix Racing, David Ragan with Front Row
Motorsports and A.J. Allmendinger with Penske Racing. Allmendinger already has
one 2012 Speedweeks victory in last month's GRAND-AM Sports Car Series Rolex
24.
Last season, with speeds reaching more than 200 m.p.h. throughout the 75-lap
non-points paying race, Kurt Busch got some assistance from defending Daytona
500 champion Jamie McMurray and received a lot more help from NASCAR to win his
first NASCAR race at Daytona.
Denny Hamlin appeared to have crossed the finish line first, but just before
crossing the line, Hamlin drove underneath then-leader Ryan Newman and passed
him below the out-of-bounds line. NASCAR prohibits passing for position below
the yellow line at its restrictor-plate tracks (Daytona and Talladega
Superspeedway).
NASCAR credited Busch with the win after he got a friendly push from McMurray
on the outside lane of Daytona's frontstretch.
Tony Stewart, Neil Bonnett, Ken Schrader and Kevin Harvick are the only
drivers to win this race two consecutive years. Dale Earnhardt was a six-time
champion of this race. The winner of this race has gone on to capture the Cup
championship seven times -- Dale Earnhardt (1980, 1986, 1991 and 1993),
Darrell Waltrip (1981), Jeff Gordon (1997) and Stewart (2002). The Shootout
winner has doubled as the Daytona 500 champion five times -- Bobby Allison
(1982), Bill Elliott (1987), Dale Jarrett (1996 and 2000) and Jeff Gordon
(1997).
Stewart, a three-time winner of this race, has finished out of the top-10 just
twice (15th in 2003) and 11th in 2011).
The 28 cars in the 2009 race was the largest field in the history of the
event, five more than the previous record of 23 cars set in 2008.
Since 1979, eight drivers have won the Daytona 500 who did not compete in the
Budweiser Shootout the week before: Trevor Bayne (2011), Michael Waltrip (2001
and 2003), Ward Burton (2002), Dale Earnhardt (1998), Sterling Marlin (1994),
Dale Jarrett (1993), Derrike Cope (1990) and Richard Petty (1979).
Chevrolet has won this race 19 times, including the 2010 race with Kevin
Harvick, while Ford has posted seven wins in this event. Buick, Oldsmobile and
Pontiac have two wins each. Dodge registered its first win last year with Kurt
Busch driving.
In 2010 Kevin Harvick overcame flu-like conditions earlier in the week to
capture this event for the second consecutive year. The race concluded in a
wild overtime finish. Michael Waltrip's crash late in the race set up a green-
white-checkered finish. During the caution, Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne were
the only drivers in the field that opted not to pit.
Biffle led the field for the final two-lap restart, but lost the lead on the
backstretch after Kahne pushed Harvick to the front. Jeff Gordon then rammed
into the back of Biffle heading into turn three, causing the Roush Fenway
Racing driver to spin and then collect his teammates Matt Kenseth and Carl
Edwards, as well as Bobby Labonte, Ryan Newman and Mark Martin. Harvick held
the lead when NASCAR displayed the yellow flag to end the race. Kahne placed
second under the caution. In all, Harvick led five times for 21 laps, while
pole sitter Carl Edwards, who placed 17th, led twice for 42 laps.
When Harvick won in 2009, he defeated Jamie McMurray under the caution.
Harvick started from the 27th position, the furthest any driver has started at
this race and won. Earnhardt Jr, who placed 18th, led four times for a race-
high 23 laps, while McMurray led for 16 laps. Pole sitter Paul Menard placed
12th.
In 2006, Tony Stewart became a three-time winner of this event, as he raced to
victory over David Gilliland under caution. Starting from the 14th position,
Stewart reclaimed the lead on lap 63 and held on for the win. Stewart led
twice for a total of 11 laps, while Kyle Busch, who placed seventh, led three
times for 39 laps.
Mark Martin equaled the record of 23 appearances in the Budweiser Shootout set
by Bill Elliott, when he raced last year. Martin, a winner in 1999, placed 17th
in 2011. Martin owns the record for most consecutive Budweiser Shootout races,
competing in 20 consecutive events from 1989-2008.
Only five drivers have won this race in their first appearance: Buddy
Baker (1979), Dale Earnhardt (1980), Jeff Gordon (1994), Dale Jarrett(1996) and
Denny Hamlin (2006). There are eight multiple winners of this race led by Dale
Earnhardt with six. Dale Jarrett and Tony Stewart are three-time champions,
while Jeff Gordon, Neil Bonnett, Ken Schrader, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Harvick
have won it twice.
The 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points season kicks off with the 54th
running of the Daytona 500 on February 26. Trevor Bayne is the defending race
champion.
