Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan left his minor-league rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday in pain after throwing just 10 pitches according to MLive.com.
Insight: Nathan was seen holding his elbow, which is the same elbow he injured on Opening Day. Nathan is recovering from a strained flexor tendon and wasn't able to throw his scheduled 25 pitches. This should keep Joakim Soria fantasy relevant for a bit while longer.

Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan is scheduled to make a rehab appearance on Wednesday with Triple-A Toledo according to MLive.com.
Insight: Nathan is expected to rejoin the major league club as long as everything goes well Wednesday. Manager Brad Ausmus insists that Nathan will resume the closers role with the Tigers even though Joakim Soria is 5-for-5 in save opportuntities since Nathan went down with his injury. That is an elbow injury, so cannot be good news. Joakim Soria will likely fill in while Nathan is sidelined.

Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right flexor strain.

Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan threw a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 3-0 lead and capture his 35th save of the season on Sunday.
Insight: The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to give Nathan a three-run cushion. Nathan ends the season with a 4.81 ERA, the 10th highest mark in the history of the league to have recorded 30 saves or more. Since July, his ERA has been under 3.50, but overall, there still isn't much confidence he will get the job done in the playoffs.

Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan walked another tight line, but was able to shut the door for his 33rd save against the Royals, on Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Kansas City was able to get guys guys on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, but Nathan got Raul Ibanez to ground out to first to end the game. While he has a nice number of saves, Nathan's 5.01 ERA continues to be extremely alarming.

Cold9/16/2014 11:35:00 PM
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan blew his seventh save of the year, allowing two runs in the ninth as Detroit lost to Minnesota, 4-3.
Insight: Nathan is 4-4 but has converted just 32 out of 39 save opportunities in 2014. He also has a 5.10 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Nathan should have been out of your lineup awhile ago.

Cold9/8/2014 3:29:00 PM
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan has been unavailable the last few days due to right elbow tenderness.
Insight: The Tigers have not had a save opportunity since Sept. 2. Nathan is supposedly available on Monday against the Royals but this something to keep your eye on the last three weeks of the year. Nathan has struggled this year with a 5.04 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 53 appearances.

Cold8/9/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan continued to struggle on the mound, yielding a run in the ninth to blow the win for Max Scherzer.
Insight: Manager Brad Ausmus said he would stick with Nathan, but with the injury to Joakim Soria he didn't really have another good option. Nathan's ERA is up to 5.36.

Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan allowed a walk and a hit Friday but ultimately closed out the Rockies for a 4-2 win.
Insight: Nathan has saved two games and thrown three straight scoreless innings since the team acquired Joakim Soria.

Cold6/9/2014 9:08:00 PM
Description: Tigers manager Brad Ausmus gave closer Joe Nathan a vote of confidence Monday, according to mlb.com. "Right now, Joe is and has been the closer the whole year," Ausmus said. "The only times he hasn't closed have been games that I've felt it was best to give him a rest. If there's a bridge that needs to be crossed sometime down the road, I'll cross it. Right now, I'm not even considering it."
Insight: Nathan has allowed 10 runs on 12 hits in his last 3 1/3 innings and has a 7.04 ERA this season. Ausmus gave him a day off Sunday and Joba Chamberlain allowed three runs in the ninth to blow a 3-2 lead against the Red Sox.

Cold6/8/2014 9:18:00 AM
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan allowed four hits and two runs in a non-save situation Saturday night against the Red Sox.
Insight: Nathan has been awful lately and the Tigers brought him into a low-leverage situation -- Detroit led Boston 8-4 in the ninth -- to try to get him back on track. However, he allowed Boston to get the tying runs on base before getting Stephen Drew to fly out to end the game. Nathan has allowed 10 runs on 12 hits in his last 3 1/3 innings and now has a 7.04 ERA this season. Joba Chamberlain is likely next in line for saves if Nathan cannot turn it around.

Cold6/3/2014 10:03:00 PM
Description: The Tigers brought closer Joe Nathan into a scoreless game Tuesday against the Blue Jays and he allowed two hits, two walks and four runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Insight: Nathan has given up seven hits, three walks and eight earned runs in 1 1/3 innings over his last three appearances and now has an ugly 6.86 ERA. If Nathan continues to struggle, the Tigers will probably turn to Joba Chamberlain (2.59 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) to close. Chamberlain closed a game on May 30 when Nathan was unavailable.

Description: The Tigers have reached a two-year agreement with All-Star closer Joe Nathan. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The deal is worth $20 million. With Nathan now under contract, Brian Wilson, Fernando Rodney, Grant Balfour and Chris Perez are the best late inning relievers left on the market.

Description: The Yankees have been in touch with reliever Joe Nathan about closing for them next season. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Newark Star-Ledger
Insight: The Tigers are also in need of a closer, though it sounds like Detroit may end up going with Brian Wilson, who is seven years younger than Nathan. The righthander has struggled in four career appearances at the new Yankee Stadium (7.36 ERA in 3 2/3 IP).

Description: The expectation is that Rangers closer Joe Nathan will decline his $9.5 million option for next season. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: Nathan has been angling for a long-term deal but we're not sure the Rangers will go for that because of his age (he turns 39 in November). Joakim Soria and Neftali Feliz would both be options to close if Nathan signs elsewhere.

Description: Joe Nathan is hoping to sign a long-term deal with the Rangers after the season. SOURCE: Rangers.com
Insight: Nathan can choose to opt out of his team option for next year, though it's clear that he'd rather remain in Texas. As well as he's pitched this season, the 38-year-old is unlikely to receive more than a two-year contract at this stage of his career.

7/28/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: According to Fox's Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers could look to deal All-Star closer Joe Nathan at this year's trade deadline.
Insight: Rosenthal says the team is trying to take advantage of a thin market for relief pitching. The Rangers' desire to add a righthanded bat before the deadline might be the worst kept secret in baseball. If Nathan gets dealt, Joakim Soria, a closer during his days in Kansas City, will slide into the ninth inning role.

Description: Rangers closer Joe Nathan went 11-for-11 in save chances and had a 0.63 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP in the month of June.
Insight: Nathan is 27-for-28 in save opportunities this year and has a 1.51 ERA. He's back to being one of the top relievers in baseball after Tommy John surgery knocked him down a few pegs.
