Description: Mainers first baseman Justin Smoak has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
Insight: Smoak was hitting well in the minors, .337 with 40 RBI in 56 games and a .924 OPS, but he hasn't been able to carry that success to the major league level. With the Mariners in a pennant race he probably won't get many opportunities to help fantasy owners.

Description: The Mainers have placed first baseman Justin Smoak on the 15-day disabled list with an injured quad.
Insight: Smoak hasn't seen an at bat since Friday. The 27-year-old owns a pitiful .208 batting average in 216 trips to the plate this season.

Cold6/10/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak (quad) is out again Tuesday.
Insight: He hasn't been in the lineup in five of the past six games due to a sore quad. Smoak started the season decently, but his production seems to be dropping with each passing month. He has never produced more than 20 HR or 55 RBI in a season so his fantasy value is limited to a few favorable matchups.

Insight: He's missed four of the past five games. Smoak started the season decently, but his production seems to be dropping with each passing month. He has never produced more than 20 HR or 55 RBI in a season so his fantasy value is limited to a few favorable matchups.

Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is 4-for-10 with a pair of homers against Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: The down side is he struck out the other six times. Smoak has never produced more than 20 HR or 55 RBI in a season so his fantasy value is limited to a few favorable matchups.

5/20/2014 10:42:00 AM

Insight: Smoak has never blossomed into the big time hitter he was expected when he came up in the Rangers organization. He's never produced more than 20 HR or 55 RBI in a season.

Cold4/16/2014 10:47:00 AM

Insight: Smoak also is 2-for-16 against Texas starter Yu Darvish, who will oppose the Mariners on Wednesday night.

Hot8/13/2013 10:41:00 PM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with two RBI Tuesday against the Rays.

Hot7/14/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: In 21 games since coming off the disabled list, Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak has hit .320 with five doubles, five homers, 14 RBI, a 16/9 K/BB and a .987 OPS.
Insight: Smoak hit .223 with a .683 OPS in his first three major league seasons and was hitting .240 with a .694 OPS when he suffered a strained right oblique in late May, but he has been a different hitter since returning.

7/4/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is batting .310 with three homers and a .956 OPS in 42 at-bats since returning from the disabled list.
Insight: The key prospect in the Cliff Lee trade with the Texas Rangers back in 2010, Smoak has hit just .228 with a .698 OPS across 1,650 big league plate appearances, so we'll need to see more before he becomes a fantasy option.

6/18/2013 6:20:00 PM
Description: M's first baseman Justin Smoak has been reinstated after a two and a half week stint on the disabled list.

Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.
Insight: Smoak suffered the injury last week. The first baseman is a .225 hitter with 348 strikeouts in 1,412 career at-bats. There's no reason to hold him.

Description: Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak suffered a strained oblique Saturday against Texas. SOURCE: Ryan Divish, Tacoma News Tribune
Insight: Most oblique injuries require a stint on the DL. Fantasy owners won't miss him as Smoak is having a terrible season (.242, 3 HR, 8 RBI). DH Kendrys Morales would move to first if Smoak lands on the DL.

5/20/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is hitless in five at-bats versus Cleveland starter Scot Kazmir.
Insight: Smoak is hitting .254 for the season, but without much power (2 homers, 9 extra base hits) which simply isn't enough from a power position like first base. As the cornerstone to the Cliff Lee trade back in 2010, Smoak has never lived up to expectations and it's long past time to give up on him as a fantasy option.

7/24/2012 12:50:00 PM
Description: For those hoping that Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak would find his swing, he'll have to do it in the minors as the team sent him to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.
Insight: Smoak is hitting just .189 for the season with 13 HR and 38 RBI, but he's never lived up to the hype as a first-round selection in 2008 (11th overall). He was traded to Seattle from Texas in the six-player Cliff Lee deal.

Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak missed Wednesday's series finale against Arizona with a sore right knee but he's expected to be fine for Seattle's next game Friday night in San Diego.
Insight: Smoak (.220, 11 HRs, 31 RBIs) fouled a ball off his knee Tuesday and was given the day off Wednesday as a precaution. He should be good to go again after the Mariners' off day on Thursday.
