Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has a 1.64 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 22 innings this year.
Insight: Last year, the Royals acquisition of Angels starter Ervin Santana worked pretty well, so they decided to try it again with Vargas. The 31-year-old had a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 innings last year and has never had an ERA better than 3.78 in a season. The extreme fly-ball pitcher is a good match for the Royals, who have two of the best defensive outfielders in the AL in Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain, but he won't keep up what he has done so far.

Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas gave up five hits and one earned run while striking out six in seven innings Wednesday at Detroit.
Insight: Vargas joined the Royals this offseason after spending one year with the Angels. The lefty is an extreme fly-ball pitcher who is prone to homers and doesn't strike many people out. He went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 frames last season and is best left for AL-only owners.
11/21/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: The Kansas City Royals signed Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million contract Thursday.
Insight: After four seasons with Seattle, Vargas fired 150 innings and went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 24 starts with the Angels in 2013. He'll presumably take former Angel Ervin Santana's spot in the Royals rotation. He's a mediocre fantasy option due to his high WHIP and lack of Ks.
8/29/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Thursday in a victory over the Rays.
Insight: It was one of Vargas' better outings of the season. Usually when you think of the Angels rotation, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson are the first names that come to mind. That's probably still true but Vargas is slowing creeping into the conversation. His 3.54 ERA in 18 starts is a career-best.
8/25/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Angels starter Jason Vargas has allowed 152 batters to reach base in 107 1/3 innings this season (1.42 WHIP), but his ERA is 3.77.
Insight: Vargas has stranded 79.3 percent of baserunners, a mark that would rank 13th in baseball if he had enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. The left-hander isn't a dominant pitcher like most of the players on top of the LOB% leaderboard, so he'll remain a risky play going forward.

Insight: The Angels are in New York for four games starting Monday and Vargas is hoping to pitch in one of those contests. He underwent blood clot surgery a little less than two months ago.
6/26/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas had surgery to remove a blood clot from his left arm pit on Wednesday.
Insight: He'll miss "several weeks" according to's Greg Johns. Vargas had been 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA before this freak injury happened.
6/25/2013 4:46:00 PM
Description: Angels lefty Jason Vargas will undergo surgery this week to remove a blood clot from his left armpit, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.
Insight: Vargas expects to resume throwing in about two weeks, so it looks like he could be back in mid-July. Dillon Gee had surgery for a blood clot in his shoulder last July and ended up missing the rest of the season, but it doesn't look like Vargas' situation is that severe.

Description: The Angels have placed lefty Jason Vargas on the DL with a blood clot near his left armpit. He'll seek a second opinion before opting for surgery, the team said. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, LA Times.
Insight: Mets starter Dillon Gee had a blood clot in his shoulder last July and missed the rest of the season. Vargas, who has gone 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this year, could be headed for the same fate if he has to undergo surgery.
Hot5/19/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles lefthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Vargas got off to a rocky start this season (0-3, 4.85 ERA in his first five starts) but he's really turned things around in his last four outings. Over that span, he's gone 3-0 with 23 strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA.
4/28/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jason Vargas tossed a complete game Sunday in a 2-0 loss to his former team the Seattle Mariners.
Insight: Behind a 2.74 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP at Safeco Field, Vargas posted a 3.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP overall last year for the Mariners. He was back at Safeco Field on Sunday and had his best start of the season. However, his ERA is still in the high-fours.
1/18/2013 6:11:00 PM
Description: The Angels avoided arbitration with left-hander Jason Vargas Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $8.5 million contract.
Insight: Vargas was acquired from the Mariners in a swap for Kendrys Morales last month. The lefty is coming off a career year, going 14-11 with a 3.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 217 1/3 innings. He will likely be the Angels' fourth starter behind Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Tommy Hanson.
Hot8/12/2012 7:06:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Jason Vargas has won six of his last seven starts to improve to 13-8.
Insight: Vargas pitched into the ninth inning against the Angels Sunday, holding them to one run on seven hits and striking out five. The left-hander has registered a 1.88 ERA over his last nine starts.
Hot7/21/2012 11:11:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Jason Vargas has allowed just eight earned runs in his last 35 2/3 innings following his disasterous start on June 20 (4 1/3, 9 H, 10 ER).
Insight: Vargas (10-7, 3.91 ERA) held Tampa Bay to one unearned run in six innings Saturday for his fifth straight quality start. He's been much better at home this season but he's now won three straight road starts, so he's safe to play anywhere.
Hot7/8/2012 11:54:00 AM
Description: Mariners starter Jason Vargas tossed his first complete game of the season with a one-run performance Saturday against Oakland.
Insight: Vargas (8-7, 4.07 ERA) has a 1.52 ERA in 23 2/3 innings over his last three starts after going 1-3 with an 8.63 ERA in his previous four.
5/19/2012 8:32:00 PM
Description: Jason Vargas picked up his fifth win of the season on Saturday, going seven strong innings against Colorado.
Insight: Vargas (5-3, 3.34 ERA) allowed three runs on five hits. The left-hander was solid in each of the previous two seasons, but he's taken it up a notch in 2012. Vargas has given up just 49 hits in 64 2/3 innings this year, and as a result his WHIP sits at 1.02.
6/4/2011 7:46:00 AM
Description: Jason Vargas hurled a four hit shutout over the Rays to earn his fourth win. Vargas walked one and struck out four in the outing.
Insight: This outing comes on the heels of two poor outings. Vargas is a control pitcher and when a control pitcher is off he can get hit hard. Despite the outing there are likely better options for you in what is a big year for pitching so far.
4/3/2011 6:09:00 AM
Description: Jason Vargas allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Oakland last night. The Mariners eventually won the game 5-2.
Insight: Vargas is useful for owners in deep leagues when he takes on Cleveland next week. He usually fares well against weak offenses.
3/14/2011 6:48:00 AM
Description: Jason Vargas threw four shutout innings yesterday and still hasn't allowed a run in spring training.
Insight: We don't expect the Mariners to compete for a playoff spot but they have had some pleasant pitching surprises in spring training in the form of Vargas, Luke French and Erik Bedard.
