Cold3/23/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Texas starter Joe Saunders got lit up Sunday against the Padres.
Insight: Saunders was tagged for eight hits and nine runs in 1 1/3 innings, though only four of the runs were earned. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says Saunders is dealing with a dead arm and it's unknown if he'll be able to make his next start. We don't have high expectations for Saunders this season.

Description: The Rangers have finalized a one-year contract with lefty Joe Saunders.
Insight: The Rangers needed some starting pitching depth with Matt Harrison coming back from back surgery, Derek Holland out until midseason following microfracture knee surgery and Alexi Ogando presenting a health risk. Saunders had a 1.60 WHIP and gave up 25 homers in 183 innings for Seattle last season. That's not a good combination, especially now that he'll be pitching at Rangers Ballpark instead of Safeco Field.

Insight: It sounds like Saunders will receive a major league contract. The Rangers struggled with pitching last season (4.31 ERA was 26th in MLB) but we don't think Saunders (11-16, 5.26 ERA for Seattle in 2013) is the answer.

Description: Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders has won his last three games while yielding just two earned runs over 20 2/3 IP.

Description: Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders gave up 11 hits and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings Saturday against Cleveland, but he escaped with a no decision.
Insight: Saunders is 3-4 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. However, he is 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP in four starts at Safeco Field, compared to 0-4 with an 11.25 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP on the road.

Description: The Mariners have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent left-hander Joe Saunders, pending a physical. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal,
Insight: Saunders went 9-13 with a 4.07 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 28 starts for Arizona and Baltimore last season. He knows the AL West well, having pitched with the Angels for five years, but he posted an ERA over 4.60 in his last two seasons there. Safeco Field is much more pitcher-friendly than Chase Field and Camden Yards, but keep in mind the Mariners are also moving in the fences this season.

Cold8/30/2012 9:34:00 AM

6/29/2012 12:41:00 PM
Description: The hope is that Arizona lefthander Joe Saunders will be ready to return to the Diamondbacks' starting rotation right around the All-Star break.
Insight: Saunders' strained shoulder is healing quickly and it looks like he'll be ready to come back after the minimum 15 days required of a trip to the DL. Look for the 31-year-old to begin a rehab assignment for the Diamondbacks shortly.
6/24/2012 3:51:00 PM
Description: Arizona lefthander Joe Saunders is headed to the disabled list. He is suffering from a strained left shoulder.
Insight: Saunders (4-5, 3.44 ERA) had given up three runs or fewer in each of his last four starts before the injury. Saunders' deactivation could open the door for top pitching prospect Trevor Bauer (4-0, 2.79 in seven starts for Triple-A Reno) to make his major league debut.
6/21/2012 7:05:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Joe Saunders does not make for a good streaming option Friday against the Cubs due to his struggles at home this season.

Insight: Saunders pitched well but did not factor into the decision. He remains at 3-6 with a 4.40 ERA with Arizona. (
