Description: Catcher Jeff Clement, a former first-round draft pick who is now in the Pittsburgh organization, hit for the cycle for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.
Insight: Clement was selected third overall by Seattle in 2005, but he played just 75 games with the Mariners before moving on to Pittsburgh. He hasn't played in the majors since 2010, but Pittsburgh may decide it needs an offensive spark. Clement is batting .307 with 15 doubles, six homers and a .927 OPS in 44 games this season.

Description: The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports Clement (left knee) will undergo left knee surgery next Wednesday.
Insight: Clement was placed on the DL last month with left knee inflammation, and a recent exam revealed a microfracture. He hit .201 with seven home runs and 12 RBI over 144 at-bats with the Pirates this season, and there is no definite timetable for his return. (RapidDraft.com)

Description: The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports Clement has begun playing games at catcher in the minors.
Insight: The Pirates tried switching Clement to first base early this season, but the transition did not go well. Moving back to catcher may help him return to the big leagues sooner. (SportsBuff.com)

Description: The Pirates have optioned Clement to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Insight: Clement was given a chance to be the Pirates' starting first baseman, but is hitting just .189 with five home runs and 34 strikeouts in 127 at-bats this season. Steven Pearce (ankle) may come off the DL soon, and in the meantime Garrett Jones should see the majority of the time at first base. (SportsBuff.com)

6/8/2010 10:00:00 AM
Description: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that Clement could be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis when Steven Pearce is activated from the DL next week.
Insight: Clement is hitting just .189 with five home runs and 34 strikeouts in 127 at-bats this season, so a trip to Triple-A may be in order no matter what. (SportsBuff.com)

4/21/2010 3:04:00 PM
Description: Clement went 1-for-4 against the Brewers on Tuesday night, snapping his 20 at-bat hitless streak.
Insight: The Pirates seem intent on developing Clement, as he has not been performing well. Maybe regular playing time will help him become productive. (SportsBuff.com)

4/9/2010 4:33:00 PM
Description: The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports Pirates' manager John Russell said Clement could see action as the team's No. 3 catcher.
Insight: Clement is also in the mix at 1B as well, and may be able to get enough playing time to become relevant in NL-only leagues. (SportsBuff.com)

3/29/2010 10:55:00 AM
Description: According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Pirates' GM Neil Huntington has hinted that Clement will be the team's Opening Day first baseman.
Insight: Clement is a catcher by trade, so he is still a work in progress at first base. But he does have some potential upside. (SportsBuff.com)

3/26/2010 4:59:00 PM
Description: Clement went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI against the Astros on Friday.
Insight: Clement is hitting just .222 in 36 spring at-bats, but is 5 for his last 13 and could still be the favorite to start at 1B for the Pirates if he ends the spring on a high note. (SportsBuff.com)

3/23/2010 11:31:00 AM
Description: Clement, who has just four hits in 28 spring at-bats, could end up platooning with Bobby Crosby.
Insight: Clement had previously been a catcher, and is now becoming a first baseman. He will have to earn full-time at-bats. (SportsBuff.com)

3/10/2010 10:39:00 AM
Description: Pirates.com reports Clement has improved defensively at first base during camp, but is hitting just .077 so far.
Insight: Clement seems to be successfully making the switch to 1B from catcher, but he will need to start hitting when the season starts to stay in the lineup every day. (SportsBuff.com)

Steady12/25/2008 8:08:00 PM
Description: Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said he plans to use both Clement and Kenji Johjima at catcher, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Insight: Clement was a highly touted prospect. He looked overmatched in his first stint in the majors last year, but hit .325 in 77 August at bats. Clement is not draftable in most mixed leagues, but he might be a consideration in AL-only leagues. (SportsBuff.com)

12/22/2008 6:36:00 PM
Description: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Clement will be the Mariners' DH when he is not in the lineup as a catcher.
Insight: Look for Clement to stay healthy and have a strong 2009 season. (SportsBuff.com)
