Description: Royals closer Greg Holland struck out the side Thursday against the Cardinals to earn his 17th save of the season.
Insight: Holland is now first in the American League in saves and he has a 1.52 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP and a 37/6 K/BB in 23 2/3 innings. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 11 2/3 innings.

Description: Royals closer Greg Holland has 10 saves in 11 chances and a 2.40 ERA this season.
Insight: He had a terrific 103/18 K/BB in 67 innings last year and he's followed that up with 22 strikeouts and three walks in 15 innings this season.

Description: Royals closer Greg Holland has been named to the AL All-Star team.
Insight: He's replacing Seattle righthander Hisashi Iwakuma, who is starting Sunday against the Angels. Holland will join his teammates Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez at the All-Star Game on Tuesday. It's the first time three Royals have made the squad since 1988 when they were represented by George Brett, Mark Gubicza and Kurt Stillwell.

Description: According to a Royals.com report, Kansas City manager Ned Yost will continue to use Greg Holland in save situations.
Insight: The other option is Kelvin Herrera, who got Holland out of a jam in Sunday's win over Philadelphia. Holland (0-1, 18.00 ERA in three appearances) hasn't looked sharp at all this season and he'll probably be on a fairly short leash the rest of the season.

Description: Greg Holland could be losing his grip on the closer's role in Kansas City. He gave up two hits and a run in 1/3 of an inning Sunday against Philadelphia.
Insight: Holland couldn't even finish the ninth inning as Kelvin Herrera had to come in and clean up the mess. Holland was even worse on Saturday (1 H, 3 BB, 3 ER in 2/3 of an inning) and it will be interesting to see who manager Ned Yost goes to the next time there's a save opportunity.

Description: Royals closer Greg Holland couldn't throw a strike Saturday night against the Phillies and allowed three runs in a blown save.
Insight: Holland walked the bases loaded and then gave up a three-run walkoff double to Kevin Frandsen. Holland walked 34 batters in 67 innings last season, but he also struck out nine and saved 16 games. As long as he doesn't string more efforts like this one together, he should hold onto the job.

Description: Since he became the closer following the trade of Jonathan Broxton, Royals reliever Greg Holland is 2-0 with 11 saves and a 0.55 ERA in 15 appearances.
Insight: Holland has recorded a 17/4 K/BB in 16 1/3 innings while allowing just 10 hits and one run in that span.
7/31/2012 6:56:00 PM
Description: Royals reliever Greg Holland will likely assume the closer role in Kansas City now that Jonathan Broxton has reportedly been dealt to the Cincinnati Reds.
Insight: Holland is a hard-thrower who has struck out 56 batters in 39 2/3 innings this season. While the 1.56 WHIP is high, Holland would have value in all leagues if he takes over the ninth-inning job.
7/31/2012 3:44:00 PM
Description: Royals manager Ned Yost confirmed that reliever Greg Holland get the first crack at the closer job with Jonathan Broxton out of the picture, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Broxton was dealt to Cincinatti Tuesday, diminishing his value greatly and opening the door for Holland. While the 1.56 WHIP is high, Holland has value in all leagues as he definitely has the stuff to excel in the role. He's fanned 56 batters in 39 2/3 innings this season.
