Insight: Pomeranz' temper cost him a spot in the rotation. He broke his right hand when he punched a chair on June 16 after allowing seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, and Oakland acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel while Pomeranz was on the DL. The A's may look to trade him or Tommy Milone for a second baseman.

Insight: Pomeranz gave up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings Monday against the Rangers and this adds injury to insult. The Athletics acquired Brad Mills from the Brewers for $1 (yes, a dollar) Tuesday and will add him to the rotation in place of Pomeranz. Mills was 4-2 with a 1.56 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP and 77 Ks in 75 innings with Triple-A Nashville.

Insight: The A's acquired Pomeranz, the 2010 fifth-overall pick, from Colorado as part of the Brett Anderson trade. The left-hander owns a career 2.97 ERA and 270 strikeouts in 242 2/3 innings in the minors but went 4-14 with a 5.20 ERA in 136 2/3 innings with the Rockies from 2011-13. He's allowed three earned runs in 13 2/3 innings (1.98 ERA) this year and could replace Tommy Milone in the rotation if he has a good start on Wednesday.
