Description: It looks like Danny Espinosa is going to be Washington's everyday second baseman for the next 4-6 weeks while Ryan Zimmerman (thumb) is on the DL.
Insight: Zimmerman broke his thumb Saturday. Espinosa averaged 19 homers and 18 steals per season in 2011-12 but played through an injury and hit just .158 in 44 games last year. He came into Sunady with a .316 average in 19 at-bats this season and could help out NL-only owners looking for middle-infield help.

Description: Unless something big happens before the start of the season it appears that Danny Espinosa will be the utility guy for the Nationals backing up Anthony Rendon at 2B, Ian Desmond at SS and Ryan Zimmerman at 3B.
Insight: Espinosa produced 38 HR over a two-year span from 2011-12, but managed to hit just .158 with three homers in 44 games last season and lose the starting job. According to a Natsinsider.com report manager Matt Williams said it would be an open competition at second, but we don't expect Espinosa to win it.

Insight: Espinosa's production has tumbled this season and rumor has it the Nationals aren't even considering him for a September call-up. At age 26, there's still time for Espinosa to turn things around but he better do it quickly.

Description: Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa is a career .188 hitter (3-for-16) with seven strikeouts against Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: Espinosa has played most of the season through a fractured wrist and is hitting just .158 with a .465 OPS. He brought power to the table with 38 HR over the past two season, but has just three to date.

Description: Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa (wrist) has been activated from the DL and optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Insight: Espinosa has played most of the season through a fractured wrist and is hitting just .158 with a .465 OPS. He struck out 10 times in 17 at-bats during his rehab assignment. The team's top prospect Anthony Rendon has played well as the starting second baseman, so there's no guarantee Espinosa will reclaim his starting job even if he performs well at Triple-A.

Description: Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa (wrist) will start his minor league rehab assignment Thursday.
Insight: Espinosa has played most of the season through a fractured wrist and is hitting just .158 with a .465 OPS. The team has been starting youngster Anthony Rendon at second base, so Espinosa might be optioned to Triple-A when he comes off the DL.

Description: Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa (wrist) finally has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

6/4/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Washington second baseman Danny Espinosa (wrist) has a favorable matchup with Mets starter Jeremy Hefner. He's 5-for-10 with a pair of home runs and a 1.800 OPS.
Insight: Espinosa is trying to play through a wrist injury that really requires a couple of weeks off and his production has suffered because of it. He has just four hits in his last 51at-bats and even this favorable matchup won't be enough to overcome the reality of the wrist injury.

Description: Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa (hand) missed Tuesday's game and isn't expected to play Wednesday though there is an outside chance his bruised wrist could allow him to play.
Insight: Espinosa was hit on the right wrist Sunday and has been dealing with soreness. Even if he's healthy enough to go, he'll likely be held out as the matchup with Miami pitcher Ricky Nolasco is extremely unfavorable. Espinosa is hitless in 17 career at-bats against the Marlins right-hander.

Insight: Espinosa was hit on the right wrist Sunday and has been dealing with soreness. "He was in there getting treatment trying to keep the swelling down in his right wrist or forearm and then he was trying to get a lot of the blood out of there because it bled quite a bit," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "I know he was shooting, trying to be ready to play [Wednesday]. But I think more likely, with the day off [Thursday], maybe Friday."
