(SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles get their
third chance to get their two-game interleague series in when they meet for a
weather-necessitated doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Camden Yards.
Single games had been scheduled both Tuesday and Wednesday, but both were
rained out, pushing the series back to what had been a scheduled off day for
Instead, it'll be another chance for Baltimore All-Star Manny Machado to make
his season debut after he sustained a knee injury last September, underwent
surgery and was placed on the 15-day disabled list to begin 2014.
"The last couple days definitely helped," he said. "I felt ready a couple days
ago. It was just a matter of getting the repetitions. I feel good. That's the
main thing. I feel great. My body feels good, everything feels good. I'm just
excited to be up here."
Machado had 14 home runs, 71 runs batted in and 51 doubles last year while
"I'm ready to play baseball. I'm going to go out there and make whatever play
comes my way," he said. "I made a couple of nice plays in the lower levels,
and I feel good defensively. I feel great. I'm not concerned about anything."
He'll face Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton, who lost his lone career start against
Baltimore in 2011 and is 0-5 with a 4.16 ERA over his last 11 starts.
The latest defeat came last Wednesday, when he was touched for four runs in
six innings of a 5-2 loss to Cincinnati.
"There were times were I was trying to go inside on left-handed hitters and
missing in the right-handed batter's box," he said. "I was literally missing
by three feet."
Morton had been scheduled to meet Baltimore's Chris Tillman, but he's been
pushed back to start game two in his first career meeting with the Pirates.
Tillman has been a much more reliable commodity at Camden Yards than anywhere
else this season, boasting a 0.69 ERA on the home turf as compared to a 5.21
mark away from home.
He's won two straight decisions, including a 10-8 verdict at Toronto on
Wednesday in which he surrendered seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Starting game one for Baltimore is righty Bud Norris, who earned his first win
of the season on Thursday against Toronto.
In that game, the former Houston Astros ace allowed three runs in six innings.
He's 4-5 with a 3.48 earned run average in 10 starts against Pittsburgh.
The Pirates send Brandon Cumpton to the mound for his second 2014 start in
He debuted last week against Cincinnati and was touched for four hits and two
runs in seven innings of a hard-luck 2-1 loss.
Baltimore swept Pittsburgh in three games back in 2012 at Camden Yards.
