National League Game Summary - Atlanta at Washington
(Saturday, June 21)
Final Score: Washington 3, Atlanta 0
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Doug Fister tossed eight innings of scoreless ball to help the Washington Nationals to a 3-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in the third tilt of a four-game set.
Fister (6-2) was efficient through eight innings, allowing five hits -- all singles -- and a walk with three strikeouts to bounce back from a loss against St. Louis in his last start. He has now won six of his last seven starts.
"The mentality that you go out there with every day is I'm going to control what I can control," said Fister. "
Anthony Rendon went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Jose Lobaton scored a pair of runs for the Nationals, who dropped the opening two games of this series.
Atlanta starter Julio Teheran (6-5) was reached for three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
"He just made a few mistakes. He was himself, he pitched well," Atlanta outfielder Justin Upton said of Teheran. "He only gave up three runs. That was just too many for the night. We didn't do our jobs on offense."
The lone bright spot for Atlanta was Evan Gattis, who extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the sixth inning.
Lobaton singled to begin the third inning, moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Fister and scored on Rendon's two-out single to center that gave the Nationals a 1-0 lead.
Washington added another run in the sixth on a Ryan Zimmerman single. Adam LaRoche walked with one out and moved up to second on a balk by Teheran. Zimmerman then poked a single into center to make it a two-run game.
Lobaton started the seventh much like he did the third, with a walk, and later scored on a scorching double to center from Rendon. Fister moved Lobaton to second with a bunt.
Rafael Soriano came on to pitch the ninth and recorded his 16th save of the season.
Atlanta went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position ... Washington went 3- for-7 with RISP ... Justin Upton returned to the starting lineup after missing the last three games with an illness. He went 0-for-4 ... The Braves send Ervin Santana to the mound in the finale on Sunday, while the Nats attempt to even the series with Tanner Roark.
