American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at LA Angels of Anaheim
(Sunday, May 18th)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 6, Tampa Bay 2
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Albert Pujols had a pair of solo home runs among his three hits to help guide the LA Angels of Anaheim to a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.
Collin Cowgill, Howie Kendrick and Grant Green each contributed an RBI for the Angels, who have won eight of their last 10 contests.
Angels starter Matt Shoemaker (2-1) hurled six-plus solid innings of one-run, two-hit ball with a career-high six strikeouts.
David Price (4-4), who was coming off his second complete game of the season, was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- on a season-high 11 hits to absorb the loss.
"Price had good stuff today but the Angels hit well. David did not throw the ball badly, we're just not hitting," said Rays manager Joe Maddon.
Kevin Kiermaier stroked his first career home run, a two-run shot in the seventh for Tampa Bay, which has lost five of its last eight games.
Pujols put the Angels on the board in the first by crushing a fastball over the center-field wall.
"I'm feeling good, I was able to contribute to the win. He (Price) made a couple of mistakes and we took advantage of them," said Pujols.
Mike Trout and Pujols connected on back-to-back, two-out singles to keep the inning alive in the third. Kendrick then lined an RBI single to left to give the Angels a 2-0 advantage.
Erick Aybar and Chris Iannetta both singled to start the fourth and Green continued the trend by hitting a liner just above the glove of left fielder Matt Joyce to plate Aybar.
After a sac bunt advanced the runners, Cowgill hit a routine double play ball to third baseman Evan Longoria, who couldn't field it cleanly and the ball bounced off his glove into left field to make it 5-0 Angels.
Mike Morin took the mound after Shoemaker walked James Loney to begin the seventh. After Yunel Escobar flied out to right, Kiermaier smacked a two-run shot that cut the deficit to 5-2.
Pujols stroked an inside changeup for his second solo homer of the game in the bottom of the seventh.
