American League Game Summary - Detroit at LA Angels of Anaheim

(Sunday, September 9th)

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 3, Detroit 2

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke went seven innings, Mike Trout and Alberto Callaspo homered and the surging Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim edged the Detroit Tigers, 3-2, on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Greinke (5-2) won his fourth straight start. The trade-deadline acquisition was charged with two runs on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

"I felt really good," said Greinke. "I mixed my pitches and was able to throw strikes with all of them."

Ernesto Frieri recorded the final four outs and worked around a walk and an error in the ninth inning to record his 18th save of the season.

Trout led off the first with a homer for the second straight game and Callaspo added a two-out, two-run blast an inning later for the Angels, who have won six straight games and 11 of their last 12.

"I got a fastball out over the plate and went the other way," said the rookie Trout. "We're having fun right now. We are relaxed."

Anibal Sanchez (2-5) gave up seven hits and three runs over seven innings in the loss. He did not issue a walk and fanned six.

Andy Dirks began the fourth with a homer and Brennan Boesch added a seventh- inning RBI double for the Tigers, who have dropped five of their last six games but remain two back in the AL Central thanks to Chicago's 10-inning loss to the Royals on Sunday.

Delmon Young singled with two down in the seventh and advanced to second base on a throwing error by shortstop Erick Aybar. After a wild pitch, Boesch ripped a double to left to make it 3-2.

Greinke struck out Jhonny Peralta to end the inning and Kevin Jepsen issued a leadoff walk to Alex Avila to begin the eighth.

Omar Infante advanced pinch-runner Quintin Berry with a sac bunt before Austin Jackson's fly out to center field.

Frieri fanned Dirks to end the threat but walked Miguel Cabrera to begin the ninth. An error by Callaspo at third base allowed Boesch to reach with two down before Peralta grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice.

"It's the same old story," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "We just couldn't get the big hit."
