Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Albert Pujols doubled and scored twice
and the LA Angels of Anaheim defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-0, on
Pujols finished with two hits while Raul Ibanez, Efren Navarro, and Erick
Aybar each drove in a run for the Angels, who have now won seven straight
against the Phillies.
Garrett Richards (4-0) spun seven scoreless innings, giving up just five hits
and no walks with eight strikeouts.
Chase Utley went 2-for-4 with two doubles to lead Philadelphia
offensively. Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz supplied the
Phillies' other three hits as the offense could not get anything going.
A.J. Burnett (2-3) allowed all three runs on seven hits with five walks across
five frames for the Phillies, who dropped their third straight overall
and eighth consecutive interleague game.
"He was just a little off with his control early on," Phillies manager Ryne
Sandberg said of Burnett. "He threw about 78 pitches through three innings and
that was quite a bit."
The Angels took an early 1-0 lead. Pujols lined a double to right with two
outs in the first inning and rounded third on Ibanez's single to right.
Hank Conger and Grant Green both singled to begin the second for the Angels.
Burnett recovered to fan Luis Jimenez and Richards, but Navarro hit a sharp
single up the middle to plate Conger and make it a 2-0 game.
Pujols singled and Ibanez walked before Aybar's double to center field scored
another. Conger then walked to load the bases with no outs, but Burnett struck
out Green and got Jimenez to ground into a double play to end the threat.
Mike Trout, who was greeted with cheers from the Philadelphia crowd for a
second straight game, tripled on a fly ball off the right-field wall to start
the Angels' seventh. After Mike Adams struck out the next two hitters, Aybar
got aboard on a walk and stole second, but Conger popped up to leave the
Ruiz got aboard on a single with one out in the home half of the seventh. He
then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Cody Asche's
groundout, but pinch-hitter Reid Brignac struck out as Richards escaped
"He knows what he needs to do," Conger said of Richards' ability to work out
of jams. "I think the game overall has kind of slowed down for him."
The Angels moved three games above .500 (21-18) for the first time since 2012
... Howard extended his hitting streak to seven games ... Rollins collected
his 2,221st hit, which moved him into a tie with Ed Delahanty for third place
in franchise history ... Pujols' double was the 534th of his career, tying him
with Lou Gehrig for 33rd all-time ... Ibanez collected his 1,200th RBI.
