National League Game Summary - San Francisco at Arizona|
(Tuesday, April 1st)
Final Score: Arizona 5, San Francisco 4
Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerardo Parra's sacrifice fly in the bottom
of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Arizona Diamondbacks
took a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the second tilt of a four-game
set at Chase Field.
Parra also had two hits and a run scored while A.J. Pollock finished 3-for-4
with an RBI and two runs scored. Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado added an
RBI apiece for the Diamondbacks, who picked up their first win of the year.
Arizona had lost two games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia last month
before dropping the series opener on Monday.
Wade Miley (1-1) allowed four runs on six hits over seven innings to earn the
win and Addison Reed, who blew a save opportunity on Monday, bounced back and
stranded a runner in the ninth to seal the win.
"The offense did a great job of kind of picking me up," Miley said. "I was
down. I gave up the four-spot and was able to kind of overcome it. I knew if I
just held it right there, we've got a pretty good lineup in here, and we'd
have a pretty good chance to get back on top."
Brandon Belt clubbed a three-run homer and Buster Posey drove in a run for the
Giants, who saw starter Matt Cain allow three runs -- two earned -- on seven
hits over five frames.
The D-backs entered the sixth trailing 4-3, but scored a pair of runs off
Juan Gutierrez (0-1) to take the lead. Chris Owings singled and stole second
before Pollock laced a ground-rule double to left-center field. After Miley
singled to put runners on the corners, Parra lifted a sacrifice fly to left
to plate the go-ahead run. Juan Perez delivered a nearly perfect throw to
home, but Posey did not block the plate and couldn't apply the tag to Pollock
Posey suffered a season-ending injury in 2011 in a play at the plate after a
runner attempted to run him over, leaving the 2012 NL MVP with a broken left
Will Harris and Reed combined for two shutout innings to hammer down the win.
The Giants scored all four of their runs in the opening inning. After Angel
Pagan and Pablo Sandoval singled around a Hunter Pence pop out, Posey singled
to left to score Pagan. Two batter later Belt clubbed a three-run shot over
the wall in right-center for a 4-0 lead.
Arizona countered with a pair of runs in the home half. Parra singled to open
the frame before scoring on Goldschmidt's double to center. Prado followed
with a single to push Goldschmidt across and make it a 4-2 game.
Arizona added a run in the fourth on a controversial call. Pollock reached on
a one-out single and moved to third on a Parra double. With Aaron Hill
batting, Cain threw a wild pitch that bounced off the backstop and right to
Posey, who shoveled to Cain at the dish. Pollock slid in and appeared to lift
his leg over Cain's glove before touching the plate safely. Replays showed
that Pollock had slid into Cain's glove, but the Giants elected not to
challenge the call.
"He was out. I had him," Cain said. "I saw what Cooper saw. He saw that it
looked like he went over the plate but he went through the top of my glove to
go over it."
