Red Sox acquire Carp from Mariners

Fort Myers, FL (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox have acquired first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Carp batted .213 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 59 games last season, but struggled with shoulder issues throughout the year and was on the disabled list three times.

The 26-year-old was designated for assignment on Feb. 12, giving Seattle 10 days to either trade him, release him, or send him to the minors.

Over parts of four seasons with Seattle, Carp has a .255 career average with 18 home runs and 71 RBI.

To make room for Carp on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved outfielder Ryan Kalish, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery, to the 60-day disabled list.
