Guillermo Mota announces retirement

Surprise, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran reliever Guillermo Mota announced his retirement on Sunday.

Mota hadn't pitched in the majors since 2012, but the right-hander signed a minor-league contract with the Kansas City Royals in January.

"I've always admired Guillermo as a person and a player. I'd like to thank him," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said in a statement. "However, in talking with him, he indicated that he wanted to spend more time with his family."

The 40-year-old played for seven major league teams during his 14-year career. He was 39-45 with a 3.94 earned run average in 743 relief appearances for the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants.
