Jimenez voids contract with Tribe, opts for free agency

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Ubaldo Jimenez is now a free agent after the pitcher decided to void the remaining year on his contract with the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians were willing to exercise the $8 million option for 2014, but Jimenez had the right to void the deal after being traded to Cleveland from Colorado during a multi-year pact.

Jimenez had a terrific year for the Indians in 2013, posting a record of 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA. He was just 9-17 with a 5.40 ERA in his first full year with Cleveland in 2012.

The 29-year-old right-hander was traded from the Rockies in July 2011. He had a record of 26-30 with a 4.45 ERA in 74 starts for the Tribe.

Cleveland can still tender Jimenez a qualifying offer of $14.1 million for next season by Monday of next week. If the Indians make the offer and Jimenez declines, Cleveland would receive a compensation draft pick from any team that signs him.

Jimenez owns a career mark of 82-75 with a 3.92 ERA in 212 games, all but one as a starter, in eight big league seasons with the Rockies and Indians. He was the starting pitcher for the National League in 2010 All-Star Game after a 15-1 start.

The Indians declined to exercise the option on the contract of outfielder Jason Kubel, who appeared in just eight games for Cleveland after being acquired from Arizona in late August and will now become a free agent.

Kubel is a career .264 hitter with 139 homers and 551 RBI in 991 major league games for the Twins, Diamondbacks and Indians. The 31-year-old veteran's best season came in 2009 with Minnesota when he hit. 300 with 28 homers and 103 runs batted in. He hit 30 homers in his first season with Arizona in 2012.
