| NOTES:The European Tour remains in South Africa for the second straight week |
|
with the Africa Open in East London. The event is co-sanctioned by the
European Tour and Sunshine Tour. Richard Sterne won last week at the Joburg
Open in Johannesburg. Fredrik Andersson Hed, 97th in the world, is the only
player in the field ranked in the top 100.
This is the fifth straight year that the tournament is being held at East
London Golf Club in East London. The inaugural event in 2008 was staged at the
Fish River Sun Country Club in Port Alfred.
Last year, Louis Oosthuizen birdied the 17th hole in the final round to propel
himself to a second straight Africa Open title by two strokes over Tjaart Van
Der Walt. Oosthuizen carded rounds of 69-62-67-67, giving him a tournament-
record 27-under 265 over 72 holes at East London Golf Club. It was the fourth
European Tour title for the South African, who became the first player to
repeat at this event in its brief five-year history. Oosthuizen will not be on
hand to defend his title this week.
Oosthuizen joined Ernie Els (2002-04 Heineken Classic), Trevor Immelman
(2003-04 South African Open Championship) and Charl Schwartzel (2010-11 Joburg
Open) as South African players to make a successful defense of a European Tour
title.
The European Tour travels to the United States next week, as the best players
in the world compete in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona,
where American Hunter Mahan will defend his title.
