Lynn storms to win in Portugal|
Vilamoura, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - David Lynn fired an 8-under 63 on
Sunday to claim a 1-stroke victory at the Portugal Masters.
Lynn captured his second career European Tour title and first since the 2004
KLM Open at 18-under-par 266.
"Today was just a case of I've got to go out there and make as many birdies as
I can," stated Lynn. "The wind was up quite a bit today so 8-under is a really
Justin Walters carded a 5-under 66 during his final round at Oceanico Victoria
Golf Club to take second place at 17-under 267, while third-round leader Paul
Waring could manage just an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for third place at
Waring was joined by Stephen Gallacher (66) and Bernd Wiesberger (67).
Henne Otto (70) and Jamie Donaldson (70) shared sixth place at minus-15, a
shot ahead of Ross Fisher (66), Robert-Jan Derksen (66), Chris Doak (70),
Pablo Larrazabal (70) and Simon Thornton (71).
Scott Jamieson, who recorded the 18th 60 in European Tour history on Saturday,
tripped to a 1-over 72 during his final round to fall into a tie for 13th
place with Martin Kaymer (67) at 13-under 271.
Waring entered the final round holding a 2-stroke lead, but quickly lost that
advantage as he tripped to a bogey at the first, while Thornton birdied the
same hole to meet Waring at 15-under.
Jamieson, who was playing in the final group along with Waring, also birdied
the first to make it a three-way tie for the lead.
The top of the leaderboard would become extremely crowded from there, as the
logjam at 15-under would reach as many as seven players before Jamieson pulled
ahead of the pack with a 10-foot birdie putt at the fifth to claim the
He would not hang on to the top spot for long, however, as Lynn poured in
back-to-back gains at the 14th and 15th to move to 17-under.
The Englishman had earlier raced up the leaderboard with an outward 30 that
included five birdies, and then traded a bogey for a birdie from the 10th
prior to his seventh and eighth birdies of the day.
Lynn then hit his third shot at the par-5 17th to within a foot of the pin and
kicked in that short birdie to move to minus-18 and claim a 2-stroke lead over
Jamieson and Larrazabal, who birdied the 11th to claim a share of second
Lynn 2-putted for par at the last to head into the clubhouse at 18-under.
"I really caught fire on the front nine, I was making everything I looked at,
although I hit it to one foot at the first, which got me off to a really good
start," Lynn said. "After that, I made a couple of great putts for par to keep
the momentum going and then I was making the birdie putts."
A late run by Wiesberger that included four birdies in a five-hole stretch
from the 12th moved him within a shot of the lead at 17-under, but he found
the water on the 17th en route to a bogey, dropping him back into a group of
six other players tied at 16-under.
Among that group was Walters, who was playing alongside Wiesberger and
converted his fourth straight birdie at the 17th to replace Wiesberger in sole
second place. Walters saved par from beyond 30 feet at the 18th to finish at
"Coming into the week, I really didn't have any goals or ambitions, I just
wanted to play and honor my mum and make her proud," said an emotional
Walters, whose mom passed away two weeks ago. "The putts kept dropping and I
kept hitting some decent shots and the last one at the end, she made it for
sure. It was probably the best moment of my career. It was so cool because I
had a lot on the line."
That is as close as anyone would get to the lead for the remainder of the day
as the final four groups on the course struggled down the final stretch.
NOTES: Lynn went nine years and 66 days between victories ... Lynn's 63 on
Sunday is the lowest final round by a winner in the history of the Portugal
Masters, beating Steve Webster's 64 in 2007 ... With Walters' finish, he moved
well inside the top 108 of the Race the Dubai and secured his European Tour
playing card for next season. He entered the tournament ranked 126th ...
Miguel Angel Jimenez had a hole-in-one at the eighth hole, winning him 100
bottles of wine.
