Andre Johnson (left) wins the 2009 TSN Fantasy Receiver of the Year Award.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Looking back on the past NFL season to evaluate what went right and what went wrong is always a valuable tool. So today, in the third-part of the series, we take a look at the receiver position and check performance with expected value which in this case is measured by Average Draft Position (ADP).
Bargain - DeSean Jackson, Miles Austin, Sidney Rice, Steve Smith (NYG), Percy Harvin, Robert Meachem, Mike Sims-Walker, Hakeem Nicks
DeSean Jackson was certainly a highlight show star, but Austin turned in the best valued performance in 2009 for any receiver. Barely on the radar screen in August, Austin assumed the role the Cowboys originally had for Roy Williams when they traded a 2009 first, third and sixth-round draft choice for his services. While Williams' name can be found in the "bust" category, Austin wins the wide receiver 2009 TSN Best Bargain Award.
If Austin hadn't had such a great season, the "Best Bargain" trophy would have gone to Sidney Rice, who came out of nowhere to post great numbers. From a 15- catch, 141-yard season in 2008 to production of 83-catches, 1,312-yards, eight touchdowns shows the value of hard work and a great quarterback.
Meachem finally took advantage of the high-powered New Orleans offense to get himself on the fantasy map and Sims-Walker took over the No.1 job in Jacksonville from Torry Holt with a solid 63-reception, 869-yard, seven-TD effort.
Fair Market Value - Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitzgerald, Roddy White, Vincent Jackson, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Chad Ochocinco, Derrick Mason, Donald Driver
You paid a steep price for Andre Johnson (ADP 15.4), but he was worth every penny leading all receivers with 275 fantasy points. After a couple of injury- prone years, Johnson has gone back-to-back seasons without missing a game and should no longer be considered an "injury-risk." The Houston wideout wins the 2009 TSN Fantasy Receiver of the Year Award.
Overpaid - Greg Jennings, Marques Colston, Calvin Johnson, Steve Smith (CAR), Anquan Boldin, Santana Moss, Jerricho Cotchery, Bernard Berrian, Laveranues Coles, Donnie Avery, Lance Moore, Justin Gage, Torry Holt
A lot was expected from Jennings (ADP 21.8) back in August and though he cracked the 1,000-yard mark, he certainly left a lot to be desired. Yards were down slightly and TDs cut in half from nine-to-four leaving owners wanting more.
Bust - Terrell Owens, Anthony Gonzalez, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Roy Williams, Braylon Edwards, Dwayne Bowe, Antonio Bryant, Eddie Royal
Owens talks a good game, but did nothing for 14 of the 16 weeks. Seems like he keeps "trading down" at quarterback from Steve Young/Jeff Garcia to Donovan McNabb to Tony Romo to Ryan Fitzpatrick/Trent Edwards. Who's next for the "reality TV star," Aaron Garcia of the Jacksonville Sharks in Arena Football One?
Gonzalez was felled by an injury in Week 1 of the season and might never get his job back after youngsters Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie took over the roles opposite Reggie Wayne. Meanwhile, Bowe was slowed by a four-game suspension in the middle of the season and Bryant suffered leg/groin injuries and never continued the promise he displayed in the 2008 fantasy playoffs. The remainder of the "busts" simply didn't show up this season.
