Description: Islanders center Mikhail Grabovski is off the injured reserved and is expected to play Saturday night against the Stars.

Travis Hamonic, D10/23/2014 12:14:00 PM
Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic not play Thursday due to an upper body injury.
Insight: Hamonic has just one goal and zero assists through the first six games and isn't a fantasy-worthy defenseman. The 38-year-old Lubomir Visnovsky, just back from injury himself, will take Hamonic's spot on the blue line.
John Tavares, C10/21/2014 9:41:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares notched his third goal of the season.
Insight: He now has 10 points, and is clearly looking like one of the best players in the game. Tavares has a chance to be a top-three fantasy player by season's end.
Jaroslav Halak, G10/21/2014 9:39:00 PM
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak was pulled in Tuesday's loss to Toronto.
Insight: He let up five goals on 23 shots, before being yanked in the third period. It was Halak's second loss of the season, but he remains entrenched as New York's top goaltender. Chad Johnson replaced Halak and stopped all five shots he faced.
Jaroslav Halak, G10/18/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak allowed just two goals, both on the power play, against the Penguins on Saturday.
Insight: Halak was superb, stopping 35-of-37 shots for a .946 save percentage. The Islanders held a 1-0 lead in the second period when New York took consecutive penalties and found themselves down two men. The Penguins scored on both power plays and then added an empty netter.
Thomas Hickey, D10/18/2014 9:41:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey scored on a wrist shot in the first period against the Penguins, but New York lost, 3-1, on Saturday.
Insight: Hickey finished with a plus-one rating. The Islanders were trying to start the season, 5-0-0, for the first time in franchise history, but fell just short in a well fought game on the road in Pittsburgh.
Mikhail Grabovski, C10/17/2014 3:24:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Mikhail Grabovski did not travel with the team and is expected to miss Saturday's game with Pittsburgh.
Insight: Grabovski took a hard hit by San Jose's John Scott. He's posted two goals and an assist in the first four games playing alongside Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson.
Jaroslav Halak, G10/16/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak has now won all three starts this season.
Insight: He did not play particulary well, stopping 20-of-23 shots, but did just enough to get the shootout win. Halak still may be on waivers, so owners need to be aware of that.
Kyle Okposo, RW10/16/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo notched his second goal of the season against the Sharks.
Insight: He also scored in the shootout, and has helped the Islanders to a 4-0-0 start. Owners, get Okposo into your lineups.
John Tavares, C10/16/2014 10:04:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares continued his stellar start to the 2014-15 season.
Insight: He had two assists on the night, and now has nine points on the season. Tavares has a great chance to finish as a top-three fantasy player this season.
Calvin de Haan, D10/16/2014 3:24:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan (upper body) has been activated from the injured reserve.
Insight: The 23-year-old blueliner has been sidelined since Sept. 23, but will make his debut this evening. He should be paired with Brian Strait. He totaled three goals and 16 assists in 51 games last season and doesn't hold much fantasy value.
Evgeni Nabokov, G10/14/2014 10:43:00 PM
Description: Lightning netminder Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves and allowed just two goals, but it wasn't enough against Cory Schneider and the Devils.
Insight: It was Nabokov's first action of the season. He allowed one even-strength goal and a power-play goal versus the Devils. Nabokov will be the backup this year to Ben Bishop.
John Tavares, C10/14/2014 9:52:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares had a goal and an assist as the Islanders defeated the Rangers, 6-3, on Tuesday.
Insight: Tavares scored at the 15:03 mark in the second period to tie the game, 2-2. The Islanders then scored the first four goals of the third period to turn the game into a rout. Tavares assisted the Islanders' final goal from Nick Leddy.
John Tavares, C10/11/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares had another solid game with a goal, an assist on three shots.
Insight: The Islanders power play scored two more times tonight. He's been scoring a point-a-game for three seasons so this isn't anything we weren't expecting.
Brock Nelson, CHot10/11/2014 10:46:00 PM
Description: Islanders forward Brock Nelson has now scored six points in his first two games after posting a goal and assist Saturday night versus Carolina.
Insight: Perhaps fantasy owners should pay attention to the 22-year-old as he's getting plenty of opportunites on the Islanders second line.
Jaroslav Halak, G10/10/2014 9:58:00 PM
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak stopped 21 of 24 shots against the Hurricanes on Friday to capture his first victory of the season.
Insight: Halak was pitching a shutout through two periods and looked good, but gave up three goals in the final period. Halak has never played more than 57 games in a season during his career, but he should easily surpass that if he stays healthy.
John Tavares, C10/10/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares had three assists, two penalty minutes and three shots in the season opener against the Hurricanes.
Insight: The Islanders power play was really clicking on opening night. New York scored twice on the man advantage in the first two periods and the one time they did not score on the power play, the Islanders put the puck in the net about a second after the Hurricane penalty expired. All three of Tavares' points came on the power play.
Brock Nelson, C10/10/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored two goals to help New York score the first three goals against the Hurricanes in the season opener, and the Islanders won, 5-2.
Insight: Two of the first three Islanders' goals came on the power play with the other coming about one second after a Hurricane penalty expired. For all intents and purposes, the Islanders scored all three goals on the man advantage because Carolina still did not have their fifth guy in position. Nelson also added two assists and finished plus-two.
Michael Grabner, RW10/10/2014 10:20:00 AM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
Insight: Grabner's timetable is for a mid-November return. He was a 52-point scorer in 2010, but this will prevent him from getting anywhere near those totals. A 30-point season would be a realistic goal.
Dan Boyle, D10/10/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Defenseman Dan Boyle is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking a bone in his right hand Thursday night, according to Rangers coach Alain Vigneault.
Insight: Boyle is 38-years-old and his numbers have been shrinking. This won't help.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D10/7/2014 1:39:00 PM
Description: Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is on injured reserve due to back spasms.
Insight: Visnovsky is 38-years-old and injuries have become a huge concern after playing just 24 games last season. A young Visnovsky could score 60 points a season, this older version, not so much.
Matt Carkner, D10/7/2014 1:37:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Matt Carkner is on injured reserve
Insight: Carkner offers almost no offense (three points last season and has little fantasy value above his fighting ability (149 PIM).
Dan Boyle, D9/30/2014 8:03:00 PM
Description: Defenseman Dan Boyle has some sleeper potential in the 2014-2015 fantasy season.
Insight: Boyle is 38 years old and has shown signs of slowing down, but the Rangers hope he can be rejuvenated in the new scenery. Boyle will compete with fellow defenseman Ryan McDonaugh for playing time on the power play.
Anders Lee, C9/30/2014 7:31:00 PM
Description: Islanders winger Anders Lee could get minutes with center John Tavares.
Insight: The Islanders know Tavares and 26-year-old Kyle Okposo will play together on the first line, but other wingers are battling for the other spot. Players are also competing for power play minutes with Tavares. Lee should land on one of the top-two scoring line and make a fantasy impact, but his value is obviously a lot higher if he plays on the top line.
Travis Hamonic, D9/30/2014 7:29:00 PM
Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic will man the first D-line with Lubomir Visnovsky this season.
Insight: Nothing changes as the two have played together for awhile. Even at 38-years-old Visnovsky will be the more offensive defenseman, so he is the one to own in fantasy. Hamonic had three goals and 15 assists a year ago.
Frans Nielsen, C9/30/2014 7:16:00 PM
Description: It will be difficult for Islanders center Frans Nielsen to score 25 goals and 58 points again this year.
Insight: Nielsen made his money on the power play's top line a season ago, but New York has Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and added Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin, alll of whom will likely cut into Nielsen's power play minutes. We project Nielsen to score 21 goals and 49 points this year and even that seems to be on the high-end of what to expect from Nielsen this season.
Mikhail Grabovski, C9/30/2014 7:12:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Mikhail Grabovski looks to man the second-line and have a role on the power play in 2014-2015.
Insight: Grabowski scored 13 goals and 22 assists last year, but his fanasy value this year lies in how much playing time and how effective he can be on the power play with John Tavares. He is a guy that can give fantasy rosters depth and an occasional start.
Ryan Strome, C9/30/2014 7:08:00 PM
Description: Islanders forward Ryan Strome is a fantasy flier to be taken late in drafts.
Insight: Last season, Strome showed flashes of the skill that led to 49 points in 37 games as a 20-year-old in the AHL, but overall he could not land on a scoring-line. He has a slight chance to play on the top line with John Tavares, and if he does, his value goes through the roof. The likelihood of that happening, however, is not very high.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D9/30/2014 7:04:00 PM
Description: Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is the Islanders best fantasy defenseman by default.
Insight: Visnovsky is 38-years-old and has seen his offensive numbers decrease over the last few years. He will likely still run the point on the power play because no other defenseman seems poised to take the job. If he does run the power play, he could see big fantasy numbers with John Tavares scoring a lot. Therefore, Visnovsky is a high-risk, high-reward player on draft day.
Kyle Okposo, RW9/30/2014 6:59:00 PM
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo will have a chance to score 30 goals this year.
Insight: It took a few extra years to develop, but Okposo has become a true star winger playing alongside John Tavares. Okposo creates space for Tavares, who also compliments Okposo perfectly to make him better. Okposo scored 27 goals and 69 points last year. If Tavares is healthy the entire season, expect Okposo to hit those numbers again or even exceed them.
John Tavares, C9/30/2014 6:53:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares said he is happy to be playing in preseason games after missing the end of the 2013-2014 with a knee injury according to New York Newsday.
Insight: Tavares broke his leg skating for Team USA at the Olympics, which prevented him from finishing last season. Many experts believe that Tavares will be in the Art Ross Trophy conversation this year. He scored 24 goals and 66 points in 59 games last season.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D9/29/2014 5:57:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is day-to-day with back spasms according to NHL.com.
Insight: Visnovsky left Monday's practice because of the spasms. His back has always bothered him, so we will see if Visnovsky gets healthy enough to play the season opener.
Mikhail Grabovski, C7/2/2014 6:11:00 PM
Description: The Islanders have signed center Mikhail Grabovski to a four-year, $20 million contract.
Insight: In just 58 games for the Capitals last year, Grabovski had 13 goals and 22 assists (35 points). He's produced 50-plus points twice in his career and is a solid second- or third-line center.
Dan Boyle, D6/9/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Defenseman Dan Boyle reportedly has no interest in playing for the New York Islanders, who acquired the veteran blueliner's rights from the Sharks on June 5 for a conditional 2015 fifth-round pick. SOURCE: Andy Strickland, Big 550 KTRS.
Insight: The 37-year-old Boyle will become a restricted free agent on July 1 and is only interested in playing for a contender. In 75 games this past season, Boyle had 12 goals but just 24 assists, 154 shots and a -8 rating. Two seasons ago, Boyle had 48 points (9 G, 39 A), a +10 and 252 SOG in 81 games.
Dan Boyle, D6/5/2014 7:51:00 PM
Description: The Sharks have traded Dan Boyle's rights to the Islanders for a conditional 2015 fifth-round pick.
Insight: The pick becomes a fourth-rounder if Boyle signs with the Islanders. He'll become a restricted free agent on July 1. In 75 games this past season, Boyle had 12 goals but just 24 assists, 154 shots and a -8 rating. Two seasons ago, Boyle had 48 points (9 G, 39 A), a +10 and 252 SOG in 81 games.
Jaroslav Halak, G5/22/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Jaroslav Halak has agreed to a four-year, $18 million extension with the Islanders. SOURCE: Arthur Staple, Newsday
Insight: The 29-year-old spent most of last season with the Blues before being sent to Washington at the trade deadline. He was traded again a few weeks later. Halak was going to be a free agent this offseason but now he's under Islanders' control until 2018.
John Tavares, C5/15/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares has resumed skating. SOURCE: NHL.com
Insight: Tavares (24 goals, 42 assists in 59 games) missed the second half of the year after tearing his MCL at the Olympics. It's unknown if he'll be ready for the start of next season.
Jaroslav Halak, G5/1/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Jaroslav Halak has been traded to the Islanders. SOURCE: Islanders.com
Insight: Washington is receiving a fourth-round pick for him. The Islanders will be Halak's fourth team in his last six seasons.
Anders Lee, CHot4/13/2014 10:59:00 PM

Insight: Strome, the 2011 No. 5 overall pick, has produced 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 21 games since he was recalled from the minors following the Olympic break.
Evgeni Nabokov, G4/10/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Islanders netminder Evgeni Nabokov made 19 saves in a shutout of the Canadiens Thursday night.
Insight: Nabokov has been splitting starts with 24-year-old Anders Nilsson since the beginning of March and is trying to show he still has something left. He'll be a free agent after the season.
Cal Clutterbuck, RW4/10/2014 5:10:00 PM
Description: Islanders winger Cal Clutterbuck (upper body) is not expected to play again this season, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.

Michael Grabner, RW4/8/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner (upper body) is questionable for Tuesday's game against Ottawa, according to nhl.com.

Description: New York right wing Kyle Okposo (lower body) will not play Tuesday against Ottawa, according to nhl.com.
Insight: Okposo (27 G, 42 A) hasn't played since March 25 due to a lower-body injury and could be done for the season.
Calvin de Haan, D4/6/2014 3:44:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan will miss Sunday's game due to a lower-body injury, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.
Insight: The blueliner left Saturday's game and was unable to return. de Haan has three goals and 13 assists in 51 games this season.
Michael Grabner, RW4/6/2014 3:43:00 PM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner (upper body) will miss Sunday's game, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.
Insight: Grabner returned from a concussion Saturday night. No word on whether he suffered another one or has a different upper-body injury.
Kyle Okposo, RW4/5/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: New York right wing Kyle Okposo is doubtful for Saturday's game against Washington due to a lower body injury.
Insight: Okposo (27 G, 42 A) hasn't played since March 25 due to a lower-body injury. Only a -9 rating hurts his fantasy value.
Michael Grabner, RW4/5/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner is questionable for Saturday's game against Washington due to a concussion.
Insight: Grabner skated for an hour on Friday and could return on Saturday. He has 25 points, 136 SOG and a -11 in 63 games this season, so only has low-end fantasy value.
Kyle Okposo, RW4/2/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: New York right wing Kyle Okposo is not expected to play Wednesday, according to the Islanders on Twitter.
Insight: Okposo (27 G, 42 A) hasn't played since March 25 due to a lower-body injury. Josh Bailey has been playing in his place on the top line and generated four points in the last four games.
Josh Bailey, LW4/1/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: Islanders forward Josh Bailey had two points (1 G, 1 A) Tuesday against Florida.
Insight: Bailey (7 G, 24 A) has been playing on the top line with Kyle Okposo out. He's recorded four points over his last four games.
Kyle Okposo, RW4/1/2014 5:36:00 PM
Description: New York right wing Kyle Okposo will not play Tuesday, according to the Islanders on Twitter.

Colin McDonald, RW3/25/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Islanders right wing Colin McDonald was all over the ice Tuesday against the Hurricanes.
Insight: He finished with two goals and one assist. Tuesday marked McDonald's first multi-goal game in almost a year (March 28, 2013 against the Flyers). We'll see if he can stay hot Thursday versus the Lightning.
Matt Martin, LW3/25/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: New York left wing Matt Martin had one of his best games of the season Tuesday in a win over Carolina.
Insight: Martin added two goals and finished the night with a +4 rating. With just 12 points on the season, Martin isn't someone fantasy owners need to be on the lookout for.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D3/24/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is having troubles with concussion symptoms again and is out indefinitely, according to Arthur Staple of New York Newsday.
Insight: Visnovsky first concussion was back in October and has limited him to 24 games this season. It's possible the Islanders will shut him down for the remainder of the season.
Evgeni Nabokov, G3/23/2014 4:35:00 PM
Description: Islanders netminder Evgeni Nabokov was a perfect 41-for-41 on save opportunities Sunday against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: It's Nabokov's third shutout of the season. Before Sunday's outing, the veteran had allowed three or more goals in seven consecutive appearances.
Kyle Okposo, RW3/21/2014 9:20:00 PM
Description: New York right wing Kyle Okposo left Friday's practice with a lower-body injury. SOURCE: Islanders.com
Insight: That leaves him questionable for Sunday's game against the Blue Jackets. Okposo is tied for sixth in the league in scoring with 69 points in 69 games this season.
Michael Grabner, RW3/15/2014 2:30:00 PM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner is questionable for Saturday's game against Buffalo with a concussion.
Insight: There is no concrete timetable for his return. Grabner has 25 points, 136 SOG and a -11 in 63 games this season, so he should be easily replaceable in fantasy lineups.
Kyle Okposo, RWHot3/14/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo had two assists Friday against the Sharks.
Insight: Okposo's stock was hurt when John Tavares suffered a season-ending injury, but he's recorded a goal and five assists his last three games. The ascension of rookie Anders Lee to the top line should help both Frans Nielsen and Okposo, as Lee has nine points in eight games since the team called him up.
Frans Nielsen, C3/14/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Frans Nielsen has recorded five points (three goals) in his last four games after going seven games without one.
Insight: The 29-year-old had two points Friday against the Sharks to set a career high with 48. He has 21 goals, four more than any other season in his eight-year career.
Anders Lee, CHot3/14/2014 10:10:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Anders Lee had another two-point game Friday against the Sharks.
Insight: The 23-year-old has put up six goals and three assists in eight games since being called up from the AHL. He was moved up to the top line following Michael Grabner's concussion and may stay there. He's gone from someone to watch to someone to add immediately.
Michael Grabner, RW3/13/2014 5:34:00 PM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner is out indefinitely with a concussion, according to Newsday.
Insight: Grabner has 25 points, 136 SOG and a -11 in 63 games this season, so he's easily replaceable in fantasy.
Anders Lee, CHot3/13/2014 5:32:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Anders Lee will join Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo on the top line, according to Newsday.
Insight: The 23-year-old has contributed five goals and two assists in seven games since he was called up from the minors. Lee had 22 goals and 19 assists over 54 games with Bridgeport (AHL) this season.
Frans Nielsen, C3/5/2014 3:59:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Frans Nielsen hasn't produced a point since Jan. 27.
Insight: Nielsen, who returned from a broken hand two games ago, is on a seven-game drought. He has 18 goals, 43 points and 120 SOG in 62 games, but his numbers probably will take a hit with John Tavares out for the season and Thomas Vanek traded.
Anders Nilsson, G3/4/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Islanders goalie Anders Nilsson made 36 saves in a 3-2 overtime win at Winnipeg on Tuesday.
Insight: The 23-year-old Nilsson has started the last two games after Evgeni Nabokov was shelled for five goals in 40 minutes Saturday. The Islanders are playing for the future so Nilsson may see the majority of the starts down the stretch, but New York's defense isn't very good and Nilsson's AHL stats were unimpressive the last two seasons.
Thomas Vanek, LW3/4/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: Thomas Vanek will not play Tuesday against the Jets, according to John Shannon of sportsnet.ca.
Insight: Vanek (21 goals, 32 assists) has played his last game with the Islanders, as the team is expected to trade him before Wednesday's deadline.
Thomas Vanek, LW3/4/2014 6:11:00 PM
Description: The Bruins and Ducks are both in on Islanders left wing Thomas Vanek, who is expected to be dealt before tomorrow's trade deadline. SOURCE: David Pagnotta, TheFourthPeriod.com
Insight: With no guarantee that Vanek (21 goals, 32 assists) will re-sign as a free agent this summer, it makes sense for the Islanders to deal him now so they can at least get something in return. Boston acquired Jaromir Jagr at the trade deadline last season and could make another big splash at this year's deadline. Acquiring Vanek would certainly qualify.
Ryan Strome, C3/2/2014 7:32:00 PM
Description: Islanders rookie Ryan Strome scored a goal Sunday against Florida.
Insight: The Islanders are going nowhere and most likely will give Strome, the 2011 No. 5 overall pick, top-six minutes the rest of the season. He had 49 points over 37 games in the AHL.
Thomas Vanek, LWHot3/2/2014 7:28:00 PM
Description: Islanders left wing Thomas Vanek had two goals and an assist Sunday against the Panthers.
Insight: Vanek has recorded four points the last two games despite playing without John Tavares, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The 30-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season and likely will be traded before the deadline.
Matt Martin, LW3/1/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Islanders winger Matt Martin is questionable for Saturday's game against the New Jersey due to a lower body injury.
Insight: Martin was back at practice and could return for Saturday's game, but more likely will miss one more contest. His absence from the lineup shouldn't affect any fantasy teams as he's totaled just eight points in 60 games with a -9 rating. He has accumulated 95 SOG and 74 PIM.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D2/27/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky scored his third goal of the season Thursday against the Maple Leafs.
Insight: Visnovsky had two points in New York's last game before the Olympic break but before that hadn't picked up any points since October 15. He missed more than three months with a concussion and has six points in 15 games.
Michael Grabner, RW2/27/2014 10:05:00 PM
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner scored a pair of goals Thursday against Toronto.
Insight: Grabner had three two-point games in January but only eight points for the entire month, and he hadn't scored in his first three games of February before Thursday. The 26-year-old has just 22 points (11 goals) in 57 games.
Anders Lee, C2/27/2014 10:01:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Anders Lee scored two goals Thursday against Toronto.
Insight: Lee has scored a point in all three NHL games he has played in his career. His first two came last April. The former sixth-round pick had 41 points (22 goals) over 54 games in the AHL this season. There's no reason to rush out and pick him up.
John Tavares, C2/24/2014 8:16:00 PM
Description: New York has officially placed center John Tavares on injured reserve. SOURCE: NHL.com
Insight: It's just a formality as Tavares (24 goals, 42 assists in 59 games) has already been ruled out for the season with a torn MCL. The Islanders are hoping he'll be ready for the start of next season.
Frans Nielsen, C2/24/2014 8:02:00 PM
Description: The Islanders have officially placed center Frans Nielsen on injured reserve. He broke his hand prior to the Olympic break. SOURCE: Newsday
Insight: He's probably still a few weeks away from returning. Before the injury, Nielsen had 18 goals and 25 assists. Fantasy owners with extra roster space can definitely afford to stash him.
John Tavares, C2/20/2014 7:55:00 PM
Description: New York center John Tavares has been diagnosed with a torn MCL. He's out for the season. SOURCE: Arthur Staple, Newsday
Insight: The Islanders weren't going to make the playoffs anyway but this is still a devastating injury and one that could have a huge impact on whether or not NHL players will be allowed to compete in the next Olympics. Islanders GM Garth Snow voiced his frustration on this subject Thursday by saying, "It's a joke. They want all the benefits from NHL players playing in the Olympics and don't want to pay when our best player gets hurt." Tavares will finish the year with 24 goals and 42 assists in 59 appearances.
John Tavares, C2/19/2014 3:52:00 PM
Description: Islanders center John Tavares suffered a knee injury while playing for Team Canada in the Olympics and will sit out the rest of the tournament. SOURCE: newsday.com
Insight: Tavares isn't that important to Canada's chances because he plays on the fourth line, but he's a fantasy superstar who has produced 24 goals, 66 points and 188 SOG in 59 games this season. The Isles next game is on Feb. 27, and his status for that game is unclear.
Frans Nielsen, C2/11/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Islanders center Frans Nielsen suffered a broken bone in his left hand when he was slashed by Colorado's Erik Johnson on Sunday. SOURCE: Arthur Staple, Newsday
Insight: Nielsen will have the luxury of healing during the Olympic break, but there's a chance he'll still miss some time when the NHL resumes its schedule.
Lubomir Visnovsky, D2/8/2014 10:29:00 PM
Description: Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky had a goal and an assist Saturday against the Avalanche.
Insight: They were Visnovsky's first points since Oct. 15. He missed more than three months due to a concussion before returning on Jan. 27.
Travis Hamonic, D2/7/2014 4:25:00 PM
Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic has been activated from the injured reserve list for Saturday's game against Colorado
Insight: Hamonic hasn't played since Jan. 12 due to his condition. He only has one goal and nine points in 47 games this season so fantasy owners have little interest, but the 23-year-old is important to New York, as he skates 25 minutes per game on the top defensive pairing.
Thomas Vanek, LW2/6/2014 7:55:00 PM
Description: The Islanders are looking to trade left wing Thomas Vanek before Friday's Olympic trade deadline. SOURCE: Renaud Lavoie, Le Journal de Montreal
Insight: It's become increasingly clear to the Islanders that Vanek is going to leave when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Vanek (19 goals, 28 assists) would make a nice supporting piece for a contender like Anaheim or Minnesota.
Evgeni Nabokov, GHot2/4/2014 10:23:00 PM
Description: Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has blocked 87 of the 92 shots (.946 SV%) he's faced in three starts since returning from a quad injury.
Insight: Nabokov shut out the Washington Capitals with 22 saves Tuesday to bring his record to 10-10-5. He has two shutouts this season.
Thomas Vanek, LW2/4/2014 6:36:00 PM
Description: The Islanders are looking to trade left wing Thomas Vanek before Friday's Olympic trade deadline. SOURCE: Renaud Lavoie, Le Journal de Montreal
Insight: It's become increasingly clear to the Islanders that Vanek is going to leave when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Vanek would make a nice supporting piece for a contender like Anaheim or Minnesota.
Thomas Vanek, LW2/4/2014 6:36:00 PM
Description: According to Newsday, New York left wing Thomas Vanek is preparing to test the open market this summer. Vanek's current contract expires after this season.
Insight: His other option would be to sign a long-term deal with the Islanders. Returning to the Isles remains an option for the 30-year-old Vanek though it makes sense for him to see what else is out there. Vanek had spent his previous eight and a half seasons with Buffalo before being traded to the Islanders in October.
Kyle Okposo, RWHot2/2/2014 10:10:00 PM
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo has produced at least one point per game in three of the four months this season.
Insight: Okposo collected 35 points (18 goals) across 29 games combined in December and January. His next goal will be his 25th, setting a new career high, and he already has a career-high 58 points in 56 games this season.
Evgeni Nabokov, G1/29/2014 5:52:00 PM
Description: Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov will start for the first time since Jan. 6 Wednesday against the Rangers at Yankee Stadium.
Insight: Nabokov played in relief Monday against Boston after missing three weeks due to a quadriceps injury. He's 9-8-5 with a 2.85 GAA and .905 SV% this season.
Travis Hamonic, D1/28/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic has been placed on injured reserve with a concussion, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.
Insight: Hamonic hasn't played since Jan. 12 due to his condition. He only has one goal and nine points in 47 games this season so fantasy owners have less interest, but the 23-year-old is important to New York, as he skates 25 minutes per game on the top defensive pairing.
Evgeni Nabokov, G1/28/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was activated Monday, servering as backup and even played 12 minutes.
Insight: Nabokov is 9-8-5 with a 2.88 GAA and .905 SV% and should resume his starting role as neither Kevin Poulin or Anders Nilsson did enough to take the spot away from him.
