Insight: Tavares led the team with six shots on net and scored twice in the second period. Unfortunately, Buffalo rallied to score three goals in the third and won in a shootout. Tavares has 15 goals and 16 assists in 35 games this season, but he is minus-four as well.
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak has been placed on injured reserve due to a lower body injury.
Insight: Halak is now 18-6-0 with a 2.24 GAA and .919 SV%. Chad Johnson should get most of the work with Kevin Pulin being called up as a backup. Johnson (5-5-0) doesn't hold much fantasy value with his 3.54 GAA and .867 save percentage.
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo scored the game-tying power-play goal on Saturday as the Islanders rallied to beat the Blackhawks, 3-2.

Description: Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored a goal and had an incredible seven shots on net against the Lightning on Saturday.
Insight: Just when fantasy owners likely thought it was safe to drop Nelson, he has a game where he is heavily involved in the offense. Coming into Saturday's game, Nelson had just three points in November after registering 12 points in October. Fantasy owners should keep Nelson for the moment.
Description: Islanders forward Josh Bailey is hoping to return to the ice this week according to New York Newsday.

Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic not play Thursday due to an upper body injury.
Insight: Hamonic has just one goal and zero assists through the first six games and isn't a fantasy-worthy defenseman. The 38-year-old Lubomir Visnovsky, just back from injury himself, will take Hamonic's spot on the blue line.
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak was pulled in Tuesday's loss to Toronto.
Insight: He let up five goals on 23 shots, before being yanked in the third period. It was Halak's second loss of the season, but he remains entrenched as New York's top goaltender. Chad Johnson replaced Halak and stopped all five shots he faced.
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak allowed just two goals, both on the power play, against the Penguins on Saturday.
Insight: Halak was superb, stopping 35-of-37 shots for a .946 save percentage. The Islanders held a 1-0 lead in the second period when New York took consecutive penalties and found themselves down two men. The Penguins scored on both power plays and then added an empty netter.
Description: Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey scored on a wrist shot in the first period against the Penguins, but New York lost, 3-1, on Saturday.

Description: Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan (upper body) has been activated from the injured reserve.
Insight: The 23-year-old blueliner has been sidelined since Sept. 23, but will make his debut this evening. He should be paired with Brian Strait. He totaled three goals and 16 assists in 51 games last season and doesn't hold much fantasy value.
Description: Islanders center John Tavares had a goal and an assist as the Islanders defeated the Rangers, 6-3, on Tuesday.
Insight: Tavares scored at the 15:03 mark in the second period to tie the game, 2-2. The Islanders then scored the first four goals of the third period to turn the game into a rout. Tavares assisted the Islanders' final goal from Nick Leddy.
Description: Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak stopped 21 of 24 shots against the Hurricanes on Friday to capture his first victory of the season.
Insight: Halak was pitching a shutout through two periods and looked good, but gave up three goals in the final period. Halak has never played more than 57 games in a season during his career, but he should easily surpass that if he stays healthy.
Description: Islanders center John Tavares had three assists, two penalty minutes and three shots in the season opener against the Hurricanes.
Insight: The Islanders power play was really clicking on opening night. New York scored twice on the man advantage in the first two periods and the one time they did not score on the power play, the Islanders put the puck in the net about a second after the Hurricane penalty expired. All three of Tavares' points came on the power play.
Description: Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored two goals to help New York score the first three goals against the Hurricanes in the season opener, and the Islanders won, 5-2.
Insight: Two of the first three Islanders' goals came on the power play with the other coming about one second after a Hurricane penalty expired. For all intents and purposes, the Islanders scored all three goals on the man advantage because Carolina still did not have their fifth guy in position. Nelson also added two assists and finished plus-two.
Description: Islanders right winger Michael Grabner will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
Insight: Grabner's timetable is for a mid-November return. He was a 52-point scorer in 2010, but this will prevent him from getting anywhere near those totals. A 30-point season would be a realistic goal.
Description: Defenseman Dan Boyle has some sleeper potential in the 2014-2015 fantasy season.
Insight: Boyle is 38 years old and has shown signs of slowing down, but the Rangers hope he can be rejuvenated in the new scenery. Boyle will compete with fellow defenseman Ryan McDonaugh for playing time on the power play.
Description: Islanders winger Anders Lee could get minutes with center John Tavares.
Insight: The Islanders know Tavares and 26-year-old Kyle Okposo will play together on the first line, but other wingers are battling for the other spot. Players are also competing for power play minutes with Tavares. Lee should land on one of the top-two scoring line and make a fantasy impact, but his value is obviously a lot higher if he plays on the top line.
Description: New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic will man the first D-line with Lubomir Visnovsky this season.
Insight: Nothing changes as the two have played together for awhile. Even at 38-years-old Visnovsky will be the more offensive defenseman, so he is the one to own in fantasy. Hamonic had three goals and 15 assists a year ago.
Description: It will be difficult for Islanders center Frans Nielsen to score 25 goals and 58 points again this year.
Insight: Nielsen made his money on the power play's top line a season ago, but New York has Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and added Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin, alll of whom will likely cut into Nielsen's power play minutes. We project Nielsen to score 21 goals and 49 points this year and even that seems to be on the high-end of what to expect from Nielsen this season.
Description: Islanders center Mikhail Grabovski looks to man the second-line and have a role on the power play in 2014-2015.
Insight: Grabowski scored 13 goals and 22 assists last year, but his fanasy value this year lies in how much playing time and how effective he can be on the power play with John Tavares. He is a guy that can give fantasy rosters depth and an occasional start.
Description: Islanders forward Ryan Strome is a fantasy flier to be taken late in drafts.
Insight: Last season, Strome showed flashes of the skill that led to 49 points in 37 games as a 20-year-old in the AHL, but overall he could not land on a scoring-line. He has a slight chance to play on the top line with John Tavares, and if he does, his value goes through the roof. The likelihood of that happening, however, is not very high.
Description: Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is the Islanders best fantasy defenseman by default.
Insight: Visnovsky is 38-years-old and has seen his offensive numbers decrease over the last few years. He will likely still run the point on the power play because no other defenseman seems poised to take the job. If he does run the power play, he could see big fantasy numbers with John Tavares scoring a lot. Therefore, Visnovsky is a high-risk, high-reward player on draft day.
Description: Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo will have a chance to score 30 goals this year.
Insight: It took a few extra years to develop, but Okposo has become a true star winger playing alongside John Tavares. Okposo creates space for Tavares, who also compliments Okposo perfectly to make him better. Okposo scored 27 goals and 69 points last year. If Tavares is healthy the entire season, expect Okposo to hit those numbers again or even exceed them.
Description: Islanders center John Tavares said he is happy to be playing in preseason games after missing the end of the 2013-2014 with a knee injury according to New York Newsday.
Insight: Tavares broke his leg skating for Team USA at the Olympics, which prevented him from finishing last season. Many experts believe that Tavares will be in the Art Ross Trophy conversation this year. He scored 24 goals and 66 points in 59 games last season.
Description: Defenseman Dan Boyle reportedly has no interest in playing for the New York Islanders, who acquired the veteran blueliner's rights from the Sharks on June 5 for a conditional 2015 fifth-round pick. SOURCE: Andy Strickland, Big 550 KTRS.
Insight: The 37-year-old Boyle will become a restricted free agent on July 1 and is only interested in playing for a contender. In 75 games this past season, Boyle had 12 goals but just 24 assists, 154 shots and a -8 rating. Two seasons ago, Boyle had 48 points (9 G, 39 A), a +10 and 252 SOG in 81 games.
Description: The Sharks have traded Dan Boyle's rights to the Islanders for a conditional 2015 fifth-round pick.
Insight: The pick becomes a fourth-rounder if Boyle signs with the Islanders. He'll become a restricted free agent on July 1. In 75 games this past season, Boyle had 12 goals but just 24 assists, 154 shots and a -8 rating. Two seasons ago, Boyle had 48 points (9 G, 39 A), a +10 and 252 SOG in 81 games.
Description: Jaroslav Halak has agreed to a four-year, $18 million extension with the Islanders. SOURCE: Arthur Staple, Newsday
Insight: The 29-year-old spent most of last season with the Blues before being sent to Washington at the trade deadline. He was traded again a few weeks later. Halak was going to be a free agent this offseason but now he's under Islanders' control until 2018.
