Description: Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman scored his fifth goal of the season,in Saturday's loss to Washington.
Insight: It was Calgary's only goal on the night, but fantasy owners do not mind. Wideman is off to a solid start offensively, with six total points, and those owners need to make sure he is in all lineups.
Description: Flames rookie Johnny Gaudreau said the healthy scratch on Friday was "good" for him according to the Calgary Sun.
Insight: Gaudreau was pointless in the first five games of the season, so coach Bob Hartley scratched him for Friday's game. Gaudreau said he talked to Hartley and understands its a learning experience that will benefit him in the long run. His teammates have been fully supporting the rookie in the locker room. The Calgary Sun reported Gaudreau looked great in practice on Saturday and should be back in the lineup soon, maybe as early as Sunday.
Description: Devils left winger Mike Cammalleri scored as New Jersey tried to comeback against the Sharks on Saturday but ultimately lost, 4-2.
Insight: Cammalleri finally got the Devils on the board at the 8:00 mark of the third period. Adam Henrique then scored to make the deficit just one, but the Sharks sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
Description: Flames goalie Jonas Hiller will start in net against the Blues on Saturday.
Insight: Hiller was great in his Falmes debut against the Canucks on Wednesday, but Calgary lost, 3-2. Hiller and other goalie Karri Ramo are expected to share time in the net this year, but Hiller appears to have the edge at the moment.
Description: Devils coach Pete DeBoer is not 100 percent sure free agent signee Michael Cammalleri will play with the top line this year according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: DeBoer actually said that he is not sold on Travis Zajac, Jaromir Jagr and Cammalleri as his top line and one has to assume that Cammalleri would be the odd man out. Zajac and Jagr had pretty good chemistry last season. Still, Cammalleri was brought in to help the Devils score, so he is still the best bet to occupy a top-line spot.
Description: Calgary winger Sean Monahan posted a solid 22-goal rookie season and we expect him to improve on that total this season.
Insight: If the soon-to-be 20-year old lands on a line with Jiri Hudler he could take a significant jump, though at this time we think he'll be on the second line. We still like a five-goal improvement.
Description: Goalie Jonas Hiller is now a member of the Calgary Flames.
Insight: Calgary gave him a two-year, $9 million contract on Tuesday. Hiller had 29 wins, a 2.48 GAA and a .911 SV% with the Anaheim Ducks last season and owns a .916 SV% in his career. The Flames were one of the worst possession teams in the NHL last season and are still in rebuilding mode, so Hiller's fantasy value takes a big hit with this move.
Description: Flames goalie Karri Ramo earned his second shutout Monday in a victory over New Jersey.
Insight: Ramo finished with 31 saves. It's his second strong outing in a row after saving 31 of 32 shots Thursday in a win against the Lightning. Expect him to be back in net Wednesday versus the Kings.
Description: Calgary defenseman Ladislav Smid is questionable for Thursday's game against Tampa Bay due to an upper body injury.
Insight: Smid has missed the past two games, but fantasy owners probably didn't notice as they don't pay attention to guys who produce eight points in 73 games, He has little fantasy value outside 78 PIM.
Description: Flames right wing Jiri Hudler is slated to return Friday versus Nashville. SOURCE: Randy Sportak, Calgary Sun
Insight: Hudler has been nursing a lower-body injury for the past two weeks. He's expected to play on Calgary's top line alongside center Matt Stajan (ten goals, 13 assists) and left wing Curtis Glencross (seven goals, seven assists).
Description: Sean Monahan scored both Calgary goals Saturday in a win over Edmonton.
Insight: Monahan bookended the performance with goals in the first period and overtime. The 19-year-old has made good on 18.2 percent of his shot chances this season. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, he's only taken 99 shots.
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross (ankle) will not play Thursday and is still a ways away from returning, according to Pat Steinberg of sportsnet.ca.
Insight: Glencross has been limited to 21 games this season by a sprained MCL and high ankle sprain. He was given a timetable of eight weeks when he suffered the ankle injury on Dec. 21 but is past that at this point.
Description: Calgary's Mikael Backlund has been chosen to replace injured center Henrik Sedin on Team Sweden in the upcoming Sochi Olympics. SOURCE: Sportsnet
Insight: Backlund is getting hot at the right time. Over his last five games, he's knocked in five goals to go with three assists. The 24-year-old competed internationally in the World Championships back in 2011 but this will be the first time he's played in the Olympics.
Description: Calgary goalie Karri Ramo is out indefinitely after he suffered an MCL injury on Saturday.
Insight: He's certainly out until after the Olympic break. Ramo is 11-10-4 with a 2.66 GAA and .908 SV%. Given backup Reto Berra's unimpressive 7-14-2 mark and 3.20 GAA we could see 22-year-old Joni Ortio in the net from time to time.
Description: Calgary center Mikael Backlund beat Minnesota goalie Darcy Keumper for two goals Saturday in a 4-3 Flames victory.
Insight: Backlund's first goal came with Calgary shorthanded while his second of the night won the game in overtime. Both were assisted by Mark Giordano. The 24-year-old has lit the lamp five times in his last four appearances. He also has three assists over that span.
Description: Calgary right wing Lee Stempniak handed out three assists Tuesday in an overtime win over the Blackhawks.
Insight: Stempniak has dished out seven assists in January. That's as many as he had in his previous three months. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, he's only scored three goals since the start of November.
Description: Flames right wing David Jones was on point Friday night in a win over Nashville.
Insight: Jones scored two goals in the victory with both coming in the third period. His last goal with 6:24 left in regulation tied the game at four and forced overtime. Despite the strong outing, Jones still has just 15 points in his 39 games this season (eight goals, seven assists).
Description: Roger Millions of Sportsnet is reporting that Calgary left wing Mike Cammalleri may have suffered an upper-body injury Saturday against Pittsburgh.
Insight: That puts his status in question for Monday night's game against Carolina. Though Cammalleri has put together decent numbers this season (13 goals, eight assists in 37 games), fantasy owners could probably survive without him.
Description: Flames defenseman Kris Russell left Saturday's game due to an apparent left leg injury, according to Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun.
Insight: The Flames didn't have an update on Curtis Glenncross (knee) or Russell after the game, but coach Bob Hartley was not optimistic. "Obviously, just the fact that they didn't come back, it's not good news," Hartley said.
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross suffered a possible knee injury Saturday and was on crutches after the game, according to Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun.
Insight: The Flames didn't have an update on Glenncross or Kris Russell (leg) after the game, but coach Bob Hartley was not optimistic. "Obviously, just the fact that they didn't come back, it's not good news," Hartley said.
Description: Flames goalie Reto Berra will start Tuesday against Boston.
Insight: Berra came back strong after missing three games to stop 30 of 31 shots against Edmonton. He's 4-6-2 this season after the win with a 3.28 GAA and .894 SV%. Neither Berra or Karri Ramo (4-5-1) have shown they want to be the workhorse in net.
Description: Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano is back after missing a month with a broken ankle. SOURCE: Flames on Twitter
Insight: He'll be active for Wednesday night's game against Phoenix. Giordano had been off to a great start before his injury, producing two goals and seven assists in his first eight contests. Fantasy owners should get him into their lineups ASAP.
Description: Flames forward Sean Monahan has a hairline fracture in his foot and is week-to-week. SOURCE: flames.nhl.com
Insight: He's been placed on injured reserve. Monahan, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, has nine goals and 15 points in 24 games, but the injury will put a dent in his Calder Trophy credentials.
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross has returned to Calgary to have his undisclosed injury evaluated. SOURCE: Flames.nhl.com
Insight: Glencross, who has five goals and four assists in 15 games this season, suffered the injury Tuesday. The Flames play the third and fourth games of their four-game road trip Thursday and Friday. Expect Glencross to miss both.
Description: Flames goalie Reto Berra will start Tuesday at Minnesota.
Insight: The 26-year-old Berra saved 42 of 44 shots in a 3-2 overtime win at Chicago Sunday in his NHL debut. The 26-year-old can lock down Calgary's starting job with another strong performance Tuesday.
