Description: The Browns finally made a move to help their weak wide receiver corps, drafting Vince Mayle in the fourth round.
Insight: A big receiver who isn't fast (4.67 40), Mayle still amassed 148 catches for 2,022 yards at Washington State. He's more like a tight end than a wideout and his fantasy value doesn't figure to be very big.
Description: The Cleveland Browns drafted Miami running back Duke Johnson with the No. 77 overall pick in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Insight: The Browns are obviously not sold on the running backs, Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell, they selected last season. Who can blame them? Neither running back was able to emerge as a clear front-runner to the starting job. Part of the problem could have been too many "cooks in the kitchen" as the Browns also had veteran Ben Tate in the backfield at the beginning of last season, but Tate was released in the middle of the season. This pick makes the Browns backfield a three-headed monster once again.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was there for the first day of offseason conditioning, according to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com.
Insight: Whether Manziel can turn it around or even wether he'll be given a chance to turn it around is out of his hands, but at least it appears he's ready to buckle down and get to work. Reports of the Browns making an offer for Sam Bradford and looking at Marcus Mariota in the draft making Manziel's roster spot a question mark.
Description: Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, released by the Chiefs after they signed Jeremy Maclin, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, according to Ian Rapoport.
Insight: Bowe's fantasy value may just go from low to lower with this move. In Kansas City at least he had a solid, though unspectacular, quarterback in Alex Smith while he'll now be catching passes from either Josh McCown or Johnny Manziel. In either case it doesn't bode well for Bowe who caught zero touchdown passes last season.
Description: The Browns have re-signed tight end Jordan Cameron to a two-year deal.
Insight: This is a big surprise, as Cameron was expected to leave after not receiving the franchise tag. Howver, after not seeing a great market, Cameron will be back with Cleveland for at least the next two seasons.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was given verbal support by his owner, Jimmy Haslam, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Manziel's rookie season was a nightmare for both the Browns and any fantasy owners who took the gamble on him, but it appears he may still get one more chance in Cleveland. That said, fantasy owners probably should run far away.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel checked himself into a treatment facility, according to Mary Kay Cabot Browns beatwriter for Plain Dealer.
Insight: We don't know the reason for the treatment, but anything that can help him be a better person and football player is welcomed. His rookie season was a nightmare for both the Browns and any fantasy owners who took the gamble on him.
Description: Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon failed a test for alcohol and will be facing a year-long suspension according to Profootballtalk's Mike Florio.
Insight: To the common fan, alcohol doesn't seem like as big of a deal as marijuana, but Gordon was prohibited from alcohol consumption as part of his DUI treatment plan from July. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the NFL substance abuse policy is "extremely strict" and clear, so Gordon will wait until 2016 to be back on the field. He will be 25 by then. Gordon led the league in receiving at 22.
Description: Browns receiver Taylor Gabriel caught three passes for 66 yards against the Ravens.
Insight: Gabriel had a 49-yard catch early in the second quarter, but that was about it. The Browns didn't have much to offer in the receiving game especially with undrafted rookie quarterback Connor Shaw under center.
Description: Undrafted rookie quarterback Connor Shaw was ok in his first NFL start.
Insight: Shaw didn't make any huge mistakes like Johnny Manziel did although he did fumble a snap and throw an interception. Shaw was 14-of-28 for 177 yards. The Browns finished the season with three offensive touchdowns in their last four games and losers in their final five games.
Description: Undrafted quarterback Connor Shaw will make his first NFL start this Sunday against the Ravens.
Insight: With Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer both injured, the Browns will hand the starting quarterback role to Shaw. Although it is a long shot for Shaw to become a full-time starter, with Cleveland still searching for a quarterback, this start can be viewed as an audition. For daily leagues, Shaw will be a great bargain and maybe he can put up a good day with the help of Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron against a beat up Ravens secondary.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will have a "chance to compete" for next season's starting gig, according to coach Mike Pettine.
Insight: That's not a great endorsement and it makes Manziel a gamble to keep in dynasty leagues. He'll have to grow up and work harder at his profession if he wants to make it as an NFL quarterback. He can't slide through on just his talent alone like he did in college. Hopefully, he's learned that lesson in this rookie season.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is out for Week 17.
Insight: It's obviously a little unfair to call Manziel a bust after two games, but he had an awful game versus the Bengals and then left with an injury versus the Panthers to end one of the worst seasons for an overhyped first-round pick. Again, it was one game, but he needs to dramatically improve his pocket presence and throwing technique which could be hard with an average arm at best. His big play ability is also somewhat limited because the speed of the NFL game is so much faster than college football. We do not expect Manziel to be the opening day starter for Cleveland next season.
Description: Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was a fantasy disappointment again.
Insight: This is the second straight week Gordon did virtually nothing. Much of that can be credited to the very poor quarterback play from Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. The issue with that excuse is Gordon was able to put up huge numbers with Branden Weeden and Jason Campbell last season, so Gordon owners don't really want to heard the quarterback excuse.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell may have hit the rookie wall.
Insight: Crowell hasn't rushed for over 60 yards since Week 12 and has just two games with over a 4.0 yards per carry average since Week 5. Against the Bengals in Week 15, Crowell gained 17 yards on seven carries.
Description: To say Johnny Manziel's first start as a pro was a disappointment is an understatement.
Insight: Manziel was awful, going 10-of-18 for 80 yards and throwing two interceptions. The Bengals also sacked three times. With the Browns basically eliminated from playoff contention, we expect Cleveland to go ahead and stay with Manziel despite this terrible performance.
Description: Browns cornerback Joe Haden suffered a right-shoulder injury and will not return to the Weej 15 matchup against the Bengals.
Insight: Haden left in the second quarter and was ruled out by halftime. That's a huge loss for the Browns with their defense already leaking in the running game and Johnny Manziel doing nothing in his first career start.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell is dealing with a hip injury and is uncertain for Week 14.
Insight: The Browns are "hopeful" that he will be able to play, but this news comes out of nowhere. The fact that Cleveland signed halfback Shaun Draughn on Wednesday, does not sound good in regards to Crowell's status. Owners need to monitor his progress throughout the week.
Description: Browns running back Terrance West was slammed by head coach Mike Pettine for his fumble during Week 13's loss to Buffalo.
Insight: It was a big play, as Cleveland was down 7-3 in the third quarter, when West fumbled. The ball was picked up by Jerry Hughes and returned for a touchdown, essentially icing the game. Isaiah Crowell's value is growing by the day.
Description: Browns running back Terrance West led the team with 32 rushing yards.
Insight: That say about all owners need to know about Cleveland's rushing day in Buffalo. West also lost a fumble, so he did very little to help fantasy owners. Isaiah Crowell is still the better option at running back.
Description: Browns wide receiver Miles Austin had seven catches for 86 yards to lead the team in both categories.
Insight: Austin was tied with Josh Gordon with seven receptions, but outgained Gordon in receiving yards. Gordon is clearly the best fantasy option in the Browns receiving core, but Austin has proved he has value in deeper leagues.
Description: Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon caught seven passes for 75 yards in Week 13.
Insight: Gordon led the team with 13 targets, but the Cleveland offense just didn't do much with Brian Hoyer under center. Johnny Manziel played the final couple drive, so it will be interesting to see what happens next week. Either way, Gordon is a WR1.
Description: Browns first-round pick Johnny Manziel came in for the ineffective Brian Hoyer and led Cleveland down the field for one touchdown.
Insight: Manziel was 5-for-8 with 63 yards and capped off the drive with a rushed 10-yard rushing touchdown. It will be interesting to see who Mike Pettine starts next week as Cleveland is still very much alive in the AFC North.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 13.
Insight: Cameron did not pass the final stage of his concussion test and thus will miss his fifth straight game. The Browns will use Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray against Buffalo but neither are recommended for fantasy use.
Description: Apparently Browns running back Isaiah Crowell's hard work has been paying off.
Insight: Coach Mike Pettine signaled out Crowell's work ethic, which in turn has turned into nice production on the field. He is averaging 5.7 yards per carry, over his past two games, and while Terrance West will continue to be in the fold, we like Crowell's upside slightly more.
Description: The Browns have officially activated wide receiver Josh Gordon.
Insight: Everyone knew he was going to play, so this is just a formality. Coach Mike Pettine has said he will be on a snap count limit, but we aren't buying it. Gordon is the most talented player on the Browns offense, and Cleveland is in a thick AFC North race. Gordon is a must-start.
Description: Browns receiver Josh Gordon, just reinstated from his long suspension, will be on a snap limit, according to coach Mike Pettine.
Insight: In other words, in his first game back, don't expect to see the guy who led the league in receiving yards last season. That may take a few games after missing three months. Still, he's too talented not to start.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate has been released according to ClevelandBrowns.com.
Insight: Tate had expressed frustration with being dropped to third on the depth chart behind Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. Perhaps the Colts will be interested in having him replace injured Ahmad Bradshaw.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate has falled to third on the depth chart.
Insight: Coach Mike Pettine said the team has been looking for more "explosiveness," and a that is what Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West provide. There is definitely a chance Tate can work himself back up, but for now owners should focus on Crowell and West.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate, the starter at the beginning of the season, finished Thursday night with the third-most carries on the team.
Insight: Tate actually did have fantasy value in this one because the Browns ran the ball a stunning 52 times and he received 10 rushes for 34 yards and a touchdown. Fantasy owners can't count on Clevelamd dominating in the run game every week, so Tate's value is sure to be inconsistent.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell saw 12 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: The Browns and his fantasy owners still worry about ball security as he almost put another one on the ground (the review ruled he was down before he lost the football). He's the backup to Terrance West.
Description: Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins is inactive for Thursday's game versus the Browns due to a knee injury.
Insight: The injury is not considered too serious. If not for the short week, Hawkins likely would have played. The Browns will turn to Miles Austin and Taylor Gabriel as the starting wide receivers in Cincinnati.
Description: Browns receiver Josh Gordon is expected to return in Week 12 against the Falcons and if you have a place to stash him you should probably to it now.
Insight: Gordon has been working out at the Browns facility every day and should be ready to explode in that first game. He'd be the perfect addition to any lineup as they head to the fantasy playoffs.
Description: Browns receiver Taylor Gabriel caught five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown in Week 9.
Insight: The Browns receiving game will likely give owners headaches all season. Andrew Hawkins is still the best receiver to own followed by Miles Austin and Travis Benjamin. Gabriel, however, is not firmly in the mix.
Description: Browns running back Terrance West outgained Ben Tate by 45 yards on the ground.
Insight: It looks like West might be slowing taking over the Cleveland backfield. Tate has had three terrible weeks in a row. He rushed for just three yards on 10 carries against Tampa Bay in Week 9. West only averaged 3.2 yards per rush, but the Browns would take that over Tate's production.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron is dealing with a concussion and will miss Week 9.
Insight: Cameron's concussion is the third in two years and that's a huge red flag. He suffered the injury on a hit from Brandian Ross of the Raiders and initial thoughts were he would miss at least two games.
Description: Browns coach Mike Pettine admitted running back Isaiah Crowell's role has been reduced because of his ball security issues according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
Insight: The Browns did not give Crowell any carries after he fumbled twice, losing one, against the Raiders in Week 8. Crowell is talented, but he is useless in fantasy if he can't learn to take care of the ball.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate salvaged an ugly performance with alate touchdown run.
Insight: Tate totaled 26 yards on 15 carries and caught one ball for eight yards. Considering he had minus five yards on his first five carries to finish with nine fantasy points is probably a miracle.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate may need a big performance on Sunday to keep the starting job.
Insight: ESPN Cleveland believes that OC Kyle Shanahan isn't in love with Tate as the team's featured back. He is averaging 2.8 yards per carry over the past two games, and if he is unable to produce against Oakland, Tate may lose more carries to Isaiah Crowell, moving forward.
Description: Browns backup quarterback Johnny Manziel is still not starting despite Brian Hoyer's worst outing of the season last Sunday in Jacksonville.
Insight: Coach Mike Pettine apparently briefly considered a change, but will stick with Hoyer for another game, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Hoyer could bounce back in Week 8 facing Oakland at home.
Description: Browns receiver Andrew Hawkins was the only worthy fantasy player for Cleveland on Sunday.
Insight: Hawkins had five catches for 112 yards against the Jaguars. He led the team with nine targets. Unfortunately, the rest of the offense struggled, so Hawkins did not have a shot at the end zone.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell seems to have moved into the second running back role behind starter Ben Tate.
Insight: Tate rushed for 78 yards and 25 carries and two touchdowns while Crowell gained 77 yards less than half the attempts, 11, on Sunday. Crowell also scored. Terrence West is the odd man out as he did not have a rush attempt against the Steelers.
Description: Browns wide receiver Miles Austin had two catches for 29 yards against the Steelers in Week 6.
Insight: Brian Hoyer completed just eight passes, so that isn't exactly surprising Austin had two catches. With so few completions and three of them going to Jordan Cameron, Austin and the rest of the receiving core did not do much.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron is probable for Week 6.
Insight: We say fire the Browns tight end up for this "friendly" matchup against the Steelers. Cameron has just 56 receiving yards over the last two games, but he looks completely healthy. He also had 47 yards on two catches before exiting with an injury Week 1 versus Pittsburgh.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate is fully practicing this week.
Insight: Tate finally returned to action against the Titans last week and rushed for 123 yards on 22 carries. Tate is a low-end RB1 this week against the Steelers. Tate averaged 6.8 yards per rush against Pittsburgh in Week 1.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron has been fully practicing this week.
Insight: Cameron has been disappointing this year with six receptions for 103 yards but two catches and 47 of those yards came against the Steelers before he left with a shoulder injury in Week 1. If he can stay on the field for the entire game in Week 6, we expect Cameron to put up his most productive fantasy day of 2014.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate rushed for 123 yards on 22 carries against the Titans on Sunday.
Insight: Tate put to bed any idea of a running-back-by-committee system in Cleveland. He carried the ball 15 times more than any other back. If he stays healthy, Tate is the man in Cleveland, but that's a big if.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate is active for Week 5 against the Titans.
Insight: Tate will start, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Friday that Tate was still worried about his knee. We would start him with caution due to the fact the Browns can move him along slowly, giving the rookie backs more touches.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate is practicing Tuesday.
Insight: Head coach Mike Pettine has said he'll start if he's healthy. Still with the performances of Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West, we don't know how big a share of the workload he'll get. Sounds more and more like an RBBC.
Description: Browns head coach Mike Pettine would not confirm that running back Ben Tate would return as the starter when he gets back on the field according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
Insight: Cleveland has a bye in Week 4, so there is a good chance Tate returns for the Browns' next game in Week 5. Pettine did say the Browns are "eager" to get Tate back, but with the emergence of rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell, Pettine says it has "made it tougher" to rely solely on Tate. At this point, owners of all three backs have to expect a running back by committee.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron nearly invisible in return to action.
Insight: He had only one catch for 23 yards, on three targets. Owners are hoping he just needs to get back into game shape so he can start producing. Look for Cameron to rebound during Cleveland's next game.
Description: Browns receiver Andrew Hawkins has nice afternoon against the Ravens.
Insight: He was targeted 10 times and hauled in seven catches. That accumulated to 87 yards. Hawkins has clearly been Hoyer's favorite target early this season, which is a nice sight for fantasy owners. The next step for Hawkins, will be to find the end zone.
Description: Browns running back Terrance West finds end zone in Week 3.
Insight: He split the reps with Isaiah Crowell. West finished with 12 carries for 36 yards and the score, as well as two receptions for five yards. Crowell chipped in with 11 rushes for 55 yards and a touchdown, making both backs fantasy relevant, until Ben Tate returns from injury.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron (shoulder) was again listed as questionable for Friday's practice, and could "go either way" for Week 3 against the Ravens according to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.
Insight: If he does play, he will certainly not be anywhere near 100 percent. The Browns figure to feature their newly-found running game behind Terrance West and Isaiah Corwell which would also limit his fantasy value. Go with another tight end.
Description: Browns running back Terrance West rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown in Cleveland's victory over New Orleans in Week 2.
Insight: In his first career start, West started slow but turned it on in the second half. He scored the touchdown in the third quarter. He is someone to try and grab or hold onto until Ben Tate proves he can stay healthy.
Description: Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert left Sunday's Week 2 game against the Saints with a head injury.
Insight: Gilbert played much better before he exited versus New Orleans after a very rough NFL debut in Pittsburgh. Buster Skrine and Robert Nelson will fill in for Gilbert, playing opposite Joe Haden.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell could see an increase in carries on Sunday against the Saints as starting running back Ben Tate is out with an injury.
Insight: Obviously, Terrance West is the best player to start in the Browns backfield, but Crowell saw the field in Week 1 even with Tate starting. Crowell rushed for 32 yards on five carries and scored two touchdowns. He is worth keeping an eye on, but it would be somewhat of a leap of faith to count on Crowell producing that kind numbers again.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate is inactive against the Saints for Week 2.
Insight: Tate suffered a knee injury against the Steelers in Week 1. On Friday, Tate hinted that he is hoping to return after the Browns bye week, which is Week 4. Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell will get the carries for Cleveland against New Orleans.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron is inactive for Week 2 against the Saints.
Insight: Cameron is still nursing the shoulder injury he suffered last Sunday in Pittsburgh. Jim Dray will likely get the most playing time at tight end for Cleveland this Sunday, but he is not a viable fantasy option.
Description: The NFLPA approved a new drug policy which allows Browns receiver Josh Gordon to be reinstated this season.
Insight: Gordon is now suspended 10 games, which is two games more than expected, but at least fantasy owners are keeping him on the bench for a reason. Gordon will be available to return Week 12, but must stay out of trouble in the meantime. It might get difficult through the bye weeks to stash Gordon away on the bench, but if possible, that is the best strategy than dropping him.
Description: Browns rookie running backTerrance West has at least two games to show fantasy owners what he's got.
Insight: West ran for 100 yards on 16 carries in relief of injured starter Ben Tate against Pittsburgh last Sunday and will have at least two more weeks with Tate sidelined to win coaches and fantasy owners over.
Description: Browns RB Ben Tate will not play in Week 2 due to a knee injury and according to Mary Kay Cabot, Browns beatwriter for Plain Dealer is targeting a Week 5 return.
Insight: Tate has always been a bit fragile and hopefully fantasy owners handcuffed Terrance West. West and backup Isaiah Crowell will have two weeks to display their talents. Heading into Week 2, only West is a viable fantasy option.
Description: Browns tight end Jordan Cameron (shoulder) did not practice again on Thursday according to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com
Insight: Cameron insisted on Wednesday that everything was "all good" even though he did not practice on Wednesday because of a shoulder injury that has bothered him since the preseason. It sounds likely that he will not play in Week 2, which actually isn't a bad thing because fantasy owners would like him to get healthy for the long term. Owners should have a backup plan ready this weekend.
Description: The vote among the NFLPA reps on a new drug policy will not take place until at least Friday.
Insight: Josh Gordon, Wes Welker and others remain in limbo. The union is waiting for a response back from the league office, which is a little busy right now with the Ray Rice scandal. Even still, stay patient and leave Gordon on your bench.
Description: Browns head coach Mike Pettine implied running back Isaiah Crowell is more of a power back than fellow rookie Terrance West.
Insight: Pettine told cleveland.com that Crowell is "a guy that, if you polled (defensive backs) and said, "Hey, do you want to make a list of guys that you want to tackle?' I don't think he makes that list. He can square up. He runs very low to the ground." With Ben Tate out 2-4 weeks, West will start this week against the Saints, but Crowell could see some substanstial action as well. Crowell scored two touchdowns in Week 1.
Description: Browns running back Ben Tate left Sunday's game against the Steelers due to a knee injury and is questionable to return.
Insight: Tate was hurt on a 25-yard run in the second quarter. He looked fine when he left the field but has not returned. Rookie Terrance West is now the Browns No. 1 back. With the game looking like a blow out at half time, Tate might not even return if he could.
Description: There is a very slight chance Browns receiver Josh Gordon could return to the team this season and forgo his year-long suspension.
Insight: The NFL and NFLPA are negotiating a new substance abuse policy, which would include a higher threshold for the banned substance in marijuana according to Cleveland.com. Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the new policy would raise the threshold from 15 nanograms per milliliter to 50 ng/ml. The NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said Friday that if the new policy is approved, players who were recently suspended under the old rules should have their sanctions revoked. It gets more complicated, however, because Gordon may have failed his drug test before the league year began on March 11. If that is the case, the new rules might not apply to him. To sum up, it is highly unlikely the stars all align for Gordon to return this season, but Gordon is explosive enough to take the risk. If you can, stash him away on an IR spot.
Description: Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he's comfortable with running back Ben Tate playing on third down.
Insight: This is certainly good news for Tate owners, but it hurts fantasy owners that were hoping rookie Terrance West would get some opportunities to get on the field on third downs. It now looks like West's only fantasy value is as a handcuff, which is still a useful because of Tate's injury record.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel completed 6-of-17 passes for 83 yards with a touchdown and ran four times for 55 yards in Cleveland's preseason finale on Thursday.
Insight: Brian Hoyer started and led the offense to a 85-yard touchdown drive. Manziel was not particularly accurate, but in his unique style, he made plays with his legs. In four preseason games, Johnny Football is 30-of-58 for 296 yards, two touchdowns and no picks. He has also ran the ball 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. If Hoyer struggles early on this season, it will be tough to keep Manziel on the bench.
Description: Browns rookie running back Terrance West ran for just 13 yards on six carries, lost a fumble and was not targeted in the passing game in Cleveland's preseason finale Thursday.
Insight: Ben Tate has outplayed West in preseason, so Tate is locked in as Cleveland's starting running back. West had 31 carries and rushed for 83 yards this preseason. West is only a handcuff in redraft leagues, but that should not be taken lightly due to Tate's injury past.
Description: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports there will be no ruling on Josh Gordon's suspension appeal this week.
Insight: FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo reported the NFL Players Union was expecting a decision by the end of this week, so this is a little surprising. Apparently there is a high volume of testimony on both sides from Gordon's latest failed drug test. In many cases, fantasy owners hoping to know Gordon's status before their draft are unfortunately out of luck. Hopefully, a decision is made next week.
Description: Browns quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer rotated every two series for the first half and neither played well. Manziel complete 7-of-16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Hoyer was 2-for-6 with 16 yards. Manziel's touchdown came in the second half against Washington backups.
According to Bob Holtzman of ESPN, a Browns team source says Johnny Manziel is now ahead of Brian Hoyer in the competition for the starting quarterback job.
Insight: The quarterback situation in Cleveland is extremely cloudy as the pair combined to go 4-of-13 through the air in the first half. Both quarterbacks skipped passes in the dirt and threw behind receivers. Hoyer missed an easy touchdown throw to Andrew Hawkins midway through the second quarter. Head coach Mike Pettine wanted to name his starter this week, but he may have to wait until after the third preseason game. Fantasy owners should too before drafting these quarterbacks.
Description: According to Bob Holtzman of ESPN, a Browns team source says Johnny Manziel is now ahead of Brian Hoyer in the competition for the starting quarterback job.
Insight: Well that was fast. Hoyer was the frontrunner when camp started, but Manziel has closed the gap already. He completed 7-of-11 for 63 yards and rushed six times for 27 yards in the Browns preseason opener Saturday night at Detroit, while Hoyer went 6-of-14 for 92 yards. Due to his rushing ability, Manziel could return low-end QB1 numbers immediately.
Description: Miles Austin is listed as one of the starting receivers on Cleveland's first depth chart, according to SB Nation.
Insight: Josh Gordon is the other, but he is facing a one-year suspension. Austin will remain atop the depth chart until he starts dealing with his typical injury problems. Nate Burleson and Andrew Hawkins are behind Austin and Gordon.
Description: According to ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio, Browns receiver Josh Gordon's appeal will either result in his 16-game suspension being upheld or no suspension at all.
Insight: The suspension won't be cut down to 12 or eight games. According to NFL policy, the officer who hears Gordon's appeal will have the responsibility only to determine if there was a violation and if he rules that there was one Gordon will be bound by the agreed-upon sanction.
Description: According to ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio, Browns receiver Josh Gordon has passed at least 70 drug tests and one test, the one that has him facing a one-year suspension, barely generated a positive. The one test would have been a negative if his urine samples were organized differently.
Insight: Urine samples are radomly split into two bottles, an "A" and a "B." If the "A" bottle is positive, the "B" is tested. The substance abuse policy states that the "'B' bottle Test need only show that the substance, revealed in the 'A' bottle Test, is evident to the 'limits of detection' to confirm the results of the 'A' bottle Test." Gordon's "A" bottle showed a concentration just one nanogram per milliliter above the limit while the "B" bottle was below the threshold. If the "B" was tested first, the "A" wouldn't have ever been tested because the "B" bottle would have counted as negative. Gordon may have a shot to get his one-year suspension reduced, especially because the NFL is taking heat for giving Ray Rice just two games for domestic violence, but he likely will get a minimum of eight games because he's failed to stay out of trouble in the past few months. His appeal will be heard on Aug. 1.
Description: Browns receiver Josh Gordon is set to appeal his suspension at an Aug. 1 hearing in New York, according to Ian Rapoport.
Insight: We think there is little chance of his one-year suspension being reduced, but at least the final answer will come before most fantasy leagues hold their draft. Gordon was a fantasy stud last season catching 87 balls for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.
Description: According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns rookie running back Terrance West is expected to practice Friday.
Insight: West was placed on the NFI (Non-Football Injury) List Wednesday, but he tweeted that he passed his conditioning test and is healthy. West is expected to push Ben Tate for the starting job this season and could remain heavily involved even as a backup, as the Browns plan to use a run-heavy offense.
Description: Browns rookie running back Terrance West will open training camp on the active/NFI list, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Insight: The reason is undisclosed. The NFI (Non-Football Injury) List is for injuries suffered off the football field or for rookie who sustained an injury prior to the draft. West is expected to push Ben Tate for the starting job this season and could remain heavily involved even as a backup, as the Browns plan to use a run-heavy offense.
Description: A Cleveland Plain dealer report says the wide receiver to watch in Browns camp will be Charles Johnson.
Insight: With Josh Gordon out of the picture and journeymen Nate Burleson and Miles Austin penciled in as starters, Johnson might be the most exciting receiver on the practice field. He's got size (6-foot-2, 215) and speed (4.38 40). He needs to stay healthy, but he could be a player worthy watching this summer.
Description: Vic Carucci of clevelandbrowns.com expects rookie running back Terrance West to push Ben Tate for the starting job in training camp.
Insight: The Browns signed Tate this offseason and drafted West in the third round. Tate backed up Arian Foster the past three years in Houston and had 1,992 yards and 10 touchdowns on 421 carries (4.7 ypc) and is the favorite to win the job. The Browns are expected to be a run-heavy team this season following Josh Gordon's expected suspension, so both Tate and West could see enough carries to make them fantasy options.
Description: Browns receiver Josh Gordon has reportedly been arrested for DWI in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Insight: If Gordon was hoping to catch a break from the league concerning his upcoming suspension he's certaining not behaving like a man who cares about his NFL future. Fantasy owners should not plan on Gordon stepping onto the field during the 2014-15 season.
Description: Browns coach Mike Pettine says the team will use a "running back by committte" in 2014. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: "I think in the AFC North, you have to be running back by committee," Pettine said. "You'd like to have a guy that can carry most of the load, but also be able to alternate guys." With one-back proponent Kyle Shanahan in the fold as offensive coordinator, free-agent signee Ben Tate looked to be in a great situation after backing up Arian Foster for a few years, but third-round pick Terrance West is going to be more involved than anyone expected.
Description: Quarterback Vince Young has decided to call it a career.
Insight: Young won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2006 and appeared on the cover of Madden 08, but he never lived up to the hype. He made just three starts after the Titans cut him following the 2010 season and will finish with 8,964 passing yards, 46 touchdown passes, 51 interceptions, 1,458 rushing yards and 12 rushing scores in 60 games. Despite the pedestrian numbers, Young went 31-19 in his 50 career starts.
Description: According to wkyc.com, Browns receiver Josh Gordon was issued a speeding ticket for going 74 mph in a 60-mph zone and his passenger was given a citation for possession of marijuana on May 25.
Insight: Obviously not a good move for a guy who is facing a one-year suspension for failing a drug test for marijuana and is hoping the NFL shows some leniency when it hears his appeal.
