Buffalo Bills Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Kyle Orton, QB8/30/2014 1:48:00 PM
Description: Quarterback Kyle Orton was signed by the Buffalo Bills
Insight: Orton is a solid backup, but not a starter anymore. Hoperfully this isn't a sign the team is concerned about E.J. Manuel's ability to run the offense.
E.J. Manuel, QB8/28/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 3-of-7 passes for 56 yards in the Bills' preseason finale Thursday night.
Insight: With most starters not playing in the fourth preseason game across the league, the fact Manuel played speaks volumes as to how worried the Bills coaching staff probably is about their second-year quarterback. Manuel finished the preseason 50-of-82 for 517 yards, one touchdown, three turnovers and six sacks taken.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/28/2014 7:53:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Thursday's preseason finale with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins suffered the injury on a slant pattern where quarterback E.J. Manuel "stared him down" and then over threw him by "a good yard and a half". It's unclear if this is a reaggravation of his previous injury or if this is a new rib injury for Watkins. The receiver suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game.
Dustin Hopkins, K8/25/2014 11:14:00 AM
Description: Bills kicker Dustin Hopkins has been waived.
Insight: Hopkins had not kicked all last season because of injury and Dan Carpenter hit 33-of-36 attempts ( 91.7 percent) so this was the expected outcome.
E.J. Manuel, QB8/23/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Manuel probably didn't play quite as well as his stat line indicates. Even though the interception wasn't his fault because intented target, Scott Chandler, fell down, Manuel threw a couple other near interceptions by throwing into double coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that the Tampa Bay defense returned for a touchdown. Buffalo gained only 82 yards in the first half. A lot of Manuel's production came against the second string Tampa Bay defense in the third quarter.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/19/2014 8:44:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) returned to practice Tuesday, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: Watkins suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/17/2014 2:56:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, called a bruise by the Buffalo News.
Insight: That's a lot better than broken, but figure the rookie receiver to sit out for a while. Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Fred Jackson, RB8/17/2014 1:02:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had another busy game, rushing six times for 27 yards and catching seven balls for 28 yards.
Insight: C.J. Spiller had six touches. The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and he gets the goal-line opportunites which limits Spillers' fantasy value and keeps Jackson as a viable fantasy option.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/16/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, but Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that he is fine.
Insight: Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel. He's a high-upside WR3 who comes with a seventh-round ADP.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/16/2014 7:52:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins will have his ribs examined and we should know more soon.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/9/2014 9:50:00 AM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught three balls for 21 yards,
Insight: That's a big improvement over the Hall of Fame game where he was shut out of the box score but he's not inspiring must confidence that he can become a fantasy-worthy receiver in his first season.
Bryce Brown, RB8/9/2014 9:47:00 AM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown looks good Friday night rushing for 64 yards and catching two balls for another 18 yards.
Insight: Brown is showing he can handle the duties if needed, but isn't likely to have any fantasy value unless C.J. Spiller or Fred Jackson go down to injury.
Scott Chandler, TE8/5/2014 8:47:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler returned to practice Tuesday after missing more than a week due to a groin injury.
Insight: Chandler sat out the preseason opener on Sunday. He has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant in 2014.
Marquise Goodwin, WR8/2/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Buffalo wideout Marquise Goodwin injured his hamstring in Friday's practice.
Insight: Goodwin went undrafted in most fantasy leagues last year, but was fighting for the No. 3 spot with Mike Williams this season behind starters Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.
Fred Jackson, RB7/30/2014 6:05:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson has signed a one-year extension worth $2.6 million.
Insight: Jackson is now signed for the next two seasons. The extension is a sign that the team isn't ready to phase out the 33-year-old Jackson from the offense even though C.J. Spiller is healthy and the Bills acquired Bryce Brown. Jackson had 253 touches last season and scored 10 touchdowns. He'll probably see closer to 200 this season but still has RB2 upside because of his goal-line work.
Scott Chandler, TE7/27/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler suffered a groin injury on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Insight: Tony Moeaki went down with a hamstring injury on Friday and Chris Gragg spent two days in the hospital with heat-related cramps. Chandler has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant.
C.J. Spiller, RB7/16/2014 4:37:00 PM
Description: According to buffalobills.com, C.J. Spiller is likely to touch the ball 20 times per game "if the offense is operating at peak efficiency."
Insight: The Bills also said last year that Spiller would get the ball until he threw up and then gave him 15.7 touches per game, so we aren't buying he's going to be a 320-touches-per-year guy even if he's 100 percent healthy. Fred Jackson is still around to steal third-down work and goal-line carries and the Bills added Bryce Brown in case the 33-year-old Jackson finally hits a wall. At most, Spiller will get 275 touches this season. He's being drafted 16th among running backs on fantasyfootballcalculator.com, so while he's not as risky as last season he still a high-risk, high-reward option.
Kiko Alonso, LBHot7/2/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Insight: Alonso suffered the injury while working out in Oregon. The 2013 second-round pick had 159 tackles, two sacks, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble as a rookie and is a huge loss for an up-and-coming defense.
Kevin Kolb, QB7/1/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: Free agent quarterback Kevin Kolb hurt any chances of latching on for the upcoming season after being arrested for boating while intoxicated last weekend.
Insight: Stops in Philadelphia, Arizona and Buffalo have proven he can't lead an offense to the playoffs, so at this point we expect his career is pretty much over.
Bryce Brown, RB5/10/2014 6:00:00 PM
Description: The Eagles traded running back Bryce Brown to the Buffalo Bills for a conditional 2015 fourth-round draft pick.
Insight: Brown struggled to provide Philadelphia with a consistent backup running back to star rusher LeSean McCoy in 2013, which is one of the reasons McCoy had to carry the ball 314 times. Philadelphia then acquired Darren Sproles in the offseason. Brown will serve as a third-stringer to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in 2014.
Sammy Watkins, WR5/8/2014 8:50:00 PM
Description: Buffalo traded up to draft Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins with the fourth pick in Thursday night's NFL Draft.
Insight: This was originally supposed to be Cleveland's pick. Watkins finished fifth in FBS last season with 1,464 receiving yards in 13 games. Having Watkins to throw to will make E.J. Manuel's life a lot easier.
E.J. Manuel, QB4/22/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel (January knee surgery), was a full participant in Tuesday's OTA.
Insight: Manuel finished his rookie year with 1,972 yards, 11 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 186 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 10 games. With only Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel and Dennis Dixon on the roster, the Bills need a completely healthy Manuel to compete in 2014.
Anthony Dixon, RB3/15/2014 9:31:00 AM
Description: Running back Anthony Dixon has agreed to a deal with the Buffalo Bills.
Insight: This move won't improve his fantasy value. Last year he was stuck behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, this season its C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. Same problem, different team.
Scott Chandler, TE3/13/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: Tight end Scott Chandler is staying with the Bills on a two-year contract, according to Adam Schefter.
Insight: Chandler set career highs with 53 catches and 655 yards last season but dropped to just two touchdowns after catching six in each of the previous two years.
Dan Carpenter, K3/11/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Buffalo place-kicker Dan Carpenter will stay with the Bills in 2014.
Insight: Carpenter was solid going 33-of-36 (91.7 percent) and 32-of-32 on extra points last season. He was 4-of-6 from 50-yards and beyond so obviously has plenty of leg.
Jairus Byrd, S3/4/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: The Bills chose not to use their franchise tag on star safety Jairus Byrd. SOURCE: BuffaloBills.com
Insight: Though he's sure to be highly coveted in free agency, Byrd remains open to signing with Buffalo. Byrd has amassed 22 interceptions over his last five seasons in Western New York.
Jairus Byrd, S3/2/2014 3:13:00 PM
Description: Contract talks have broken down between the Bills and safety Jairus Byrd. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Buffalo has less than 24 hours to decide what to do with its franchise tag. If the tag is used on Byrd, the three-time Pro Bowler will earn $8.4 million in 2014. If not, he'll become a free agent. Byrd led the team with four interceptions in 2013 even after missing the first five games with plantar fasciitis.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/29/2013 3:19:00 PM
Description: Buffalo will be without Stevie Johnson in Week 17.
Insight: Johnson missed last week's game to be with his family after his mother passed away. He'll sit out this week as well. Johnson's absence should open up more targets for rookies Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. As usual, Buffalo will rely heavily on its ground game with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson splitting carries.
Thad Lewis, QB12/27/2013 7:57:00 PM
Description: Bills QB Thad Lewis will make another start Sunday against New England.
Insight: E.J. Manuel is done for the year with a sprained knee. While Lewis hasn't been a total disaster this season (3 TD, 77.8 QB rating in five games), he certainly can't be trusted in championship week. Leave him on the waiver wire where he belongs.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/27/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel has been ruled out for Week 17, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia. Thad Lewis will start for a second straight game.
Insight: Manuel has sprained both knees in the last three months and will finish his rookie year with 1,972 yards, 11 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 186 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 10 games.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/26/2013 12:25:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel has been practicing the week and is questionable for Sunday's game against New England, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia.
Insight: He sprained his knee two week's ago versus Jacksonville. We should know more after coach Doug Marrone talks to the media as to whether it will be Manuel or Thad Lewis at the controls in Week 17.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/23/2013 5:35:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (personal) may not be available for Week 17 against the Patriots, according to buffalobills.com.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away on Dec. 14 and he missed Week 16. The funeral will come on Dec. 27, so Johnson will probably miss practice all week.
Fred Jackson, RB12/22/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had 19 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over Miami. He confirmed after the game that he played through broken ribs, according to the Buffalo News.
Insight: C.J. Spiller carried the football 20 times, but once again Jackson outperformed him as Spiller had 77 yards. The 32-year-old Jackson has rushed for 836 yards and eight touchdowns on 193 carries and caught 44 passes for 334 receiving yards and one touchdown this season.
Robert Woods, WR12/22/2013 3:06:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Robert Woods was ejected from Sunday's game against the Dolphins for throwing a punch.
Insight: Woods caught a 57-yard pass in the first half and had three catches for 70 yards on five targets in the game. The Bills are without Stevie Johnson (personal), Woods and Marquise Goodwin (knee).
Stevie Johnson, WR12/20/2013 1:22:00 PM
Description: Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson won't play in Week 16 against Miami after the death of his mother.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away Saturday and he played Sunday (one catch for four yards), but flew back to California to be with his family earlier this week. Given that the Bills have nothing to play for, this is completely understandable.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/18/2013 5:22:00 PM
Description: Bills coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Stevie Johnson to play in Week 16 against Miami after the death of his mother.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away Saturday, but he chose to play Sunday against the Jaguars. He flew back to California to be with his family earlier this week.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/18/2013 3:44:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel won't be on the field Sunday against Miami.
Insight: He sprained his knee last week versus Jacksonville and still has a lot of swelling. Thad Lewis will get the start under center.
C.J. Spiller, RB12/1/2013 7:50:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller had a 77-yard run early in Sunday's game against the Falcons and finished with a season-high 149 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Insight: Coming off the Week 12 bye, Spiller may finally be fully healthy after playing through an ankle sprain for several weeks. He's back on the RB2 radar, though he's best used as a flex play given his boom-or-bust nature.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/28/2013 1:11:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) said he feels like he's getting back to his "old self" after the bye week. "I feel good," said Spiller Wednesday. "I definitely feel like I’m getting back to my old self, making the cuts, making that explosion, so just looking forward to seeing how Sunday goes." SOURCE: buffalobills.com
Insight: We heard Spiller say something similar after running for 116 yards on 12 carries in Week 9, but he managed just 29 yards on 21 carries over the last two games. He has a good matchup Sunday against the Falcons, but shouldn't be trusted as anything more than a flex play.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/25/2013 9:03:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson (groin) was back at practice on Monday. SOURCE: Josh Alper, NBC's Pro Football Talk
Insight: So was Robert Woods. Neither player was active for the team's Week 11 loss versus Pittsburgh. The Bills host the Falcons in Toronto on Sunday.
E.J. Manuel, QB11/17/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: Even without Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods, Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel was able to have his best game of the season Sunday against the Jets.
Insight: Manuel aired the ball out to receivers Marquise Goodwin and T.J. Graham, hitting both players for touchdowns of 30-plus yards. He finished with 20 completions on 28 attempts, 245 yards and two scores. This puts Manuel back on the QB2 radar after a dismal Week 10 effort against the Steelers.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/17/2013 5:37:00 PM
Description: The Bills made the effort to get C.J. Spiller more involved Sunday against the Jets, but he failed to take advantage.
Insight: Spiller led Buffalo with 13 carries but managed a measly six yards rushing. He had one fantasy point due to his 10 receiving yards. Hopefully he'll come out of the bye week 100 percent healthy and ready to make a difference in the final five games, but we aren't hopeful.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/15/2013 1:18:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (groin) missed a third consecutive practice and has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Insight: Robert Woods (ankle) will also miss Week 11 leaving T.J. Graham, Marquise Goodwin and Chris Hogan as the team's top three healthy wideouts. Tight end Scott Chandler should see plenty of targets.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/15/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (groin) missed a third consecutive practice and must be considered doubtful for Sunday against the Jets.
Insight: Robert Woods (ankle) will miss Week 11 leaving T.J. Graham, Marquise Goodwin and Chris Hogan as the team's top three healthy wideouts.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/14/2013 1:57:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (groin) missed Wednesday's practice and now he's missed Thursday.
Insight: Johnson has been dealing with a groin injury and was noncommital about his status for Week 11. Robert Woods (ankle) will miss Week 11 leaving T.J. Graham, Marquise Goodwin and Chris Hogan as the team's top three healthy wideouts.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/13/2013 3:14:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (groin) missed Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Johnson has been dealing with a groin injury and was noncommital about his status for Week 11 after the team lost to Pittsburgh Sunday. Robert Woods (ankle) also missed practice Wednesday, leaving T.J. Graham, Marquise Goodwin and Chris Hogan as the team's top three healthy wideouts.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/11/2013 5:10:00 PM
Description: Bills coach Doug Marrone said that running back C.J. Spiller's lack of playing time in Week 10 "doesn't have anything to do with his ankle," according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR550.
Insight: After sitting out Week 8 to heal his ankle sprain, Spiller rushed for 116 yards on 12 carries in Week 9 against the Chiefs. Marrone removed him from the injury report entirely going into Week 10 and indicated he was excited to get him more touches. However, he saw just 11 against Pittsburgh Sunday. He'll be a boom-or-bust RB2 going forward.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/10/2013 7:28:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson was noncommital about his status for next week's game against the Jets after Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh. SOURCE: Tim Graham, Buffalo News
Insight: Johnson left the field early because of a groin injury. The chemistry that Johnson and E.J. Manuel shared early in the season wasn't there on Sunday (three catches for 48 yards). Even when healthy, Johnson is a flex option at best.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/10/2013 3:40:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson will not be able to finish Week 10 against Pittsburgh after suffering a groin injury.
Insight: He'll finish with three catches for 48 yards. He's dealt with groin injuries over the last few years and they have limited his effectiveness.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/7/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller said he is "very close" to being where he wants to be with his ankle injury, according to WGR550.com.
Insight: After sitting out Week 8 to heal his ankle sprain, Spiller rushed for 116 yards on 12 carries in Week 9 against the Chiefs. Bills coach Doug Marrone removed him from the injury report entirely going into Week 10. With Spiller expected to see an increase in touches Sunday against the Steelers, fantasy owners can confidently start him for the first time since Week 4.
E.J. Manuel, QB11/7/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: Bills coach Doug Marrone confirmed that E.J. Manuel (knee) will start Sunday against the Steelers.
Insight: Manuel missed a little over a month after spraining his knee in a loss to Cleveland. Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel proved to be ineffective backups, going just 1-3 in his absence. While the Steelers were torched by Tom Brady in Week 9, their pass defense was strong in the weeks prior. Consider Manuel a low-end QB2 this week.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/6/2013 3:46:00 PM
Description: Buffalo head coach Doug Marrone expects to give running back C.J. Spiller even more touches this week against the Steelers. SOURCE: Joe Buscaglia, WGR 550
Insight: Spiller's ankle injury is no longer an issue as evidenced by his breakout game last week versus Kansas City (12 rushes for 116 yards). Spiller and his backfield mate Fred Jackson will both be worth starting this week against a Pittsburgh defense that let up 55 points Sunday at New England.
Thad Lewis, QB11/6/2013 2:21:00 PM
Description: Buffalo quarterback Thad Lewis went through a full practice on Wednesday. SOURCE: Joe Buscaglia, WGR 550
Insight: He missed last week's game because of sore ribs. E.J. Manuel has recovered from a knee injury and is expected to get the start Sunday versus the Steelers.
E.J. Manuel, QB11/6/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: According to the Bills' official Twitter page, E.J. Manuel is expected to get the start at quarterback this week against the Steelers.
Insight: Manuel missed a little over a month after spraining his knee in a loss to Cleveland. Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel proved to be ineffective backups, going just 1-3 in his absence. Pittsburgh's secondary has never looked more vulnerable after giving up a franchise-record 55 points Sunday against New England. This should be a good matchup for Manuel.
E.J. Manuel, QB11/4/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Buffalo's franchise QB E.J. Manuel (knee) has been cleared to practice, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak.
Insight: That means he could be back as soon as Week 10. On the other hand, the Bills might choose to bring Manuel back after the team's bye in Week 12. Obviously, his return would be huge for owners of Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods.
Stevie Johnson, WR11/3/2013 5:33:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson had just 36 receiving yards on five catches Sunday against the Chiefs.
Insight: He was not the preferred target of quarterback Jeff Tuel and only finished with seven targets because Robert Woods suffered a knee injury in the third quarter. Four of his targets came on the Bills' final drive. Thad Lewis targeted Johnson 23 times the previous two games, hitting him 13 times for 133 yards and a touchdown.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/3/2013 5:30:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller looked rejuvenated Sunday against the Chiefs after sitting out Week 8 to heal his ankle sprain.
Insight: Spiller was still sporting a limp, but he was able to cut effectively and galloped for 116 rushing yards on 12 carries. He added 39 receiving yards on two catches. Fantasy owners now have to hope his ankle responds from the expanded workload. If it does, he could be in for an explosive second half of the season.
Robert Woods, WR11/3/2013 3:18:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Robert Woods left Sunday's game against the Chiefs with a possible left knee injury, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.
Insight: Woods appeared to bang his knee on an incomplete pass in the third quarter. He retreated to the locker room slowly with the training staff.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/3/2013 12:12:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller is active for Week 9
Insight: The return of Spiller will certainly help the Bills as they face the undefeated Chiefs, but having to split carries with Fred Jackson makes Spiller a flex option, at best, for Week 9.
Jeff Tuel, QB11/2/2013 10:31:00 PM
Description: Jeff Tuel will start at quarterback for the Bills in Week 9. SOURCE: Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports
Insight: Thad Lewis is out with a rib injury. Tuel will be making his first NFL start. That's terrific news for owners of Kansas City's defense.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB11/1/2013 7:38:00 PM
Description: Bills QB Thad Lewis is now considered doubtful for Sunday's game versus Kansas City. SOURCE: Joe Buscaglia, WGR 550
Insight: Lewis is dealing with a combination of sore ribs and flu-like symptoms. Jeff Tuel is likely to get the start at quarterback, which could spell disastrous results for Buffalo's offense. This is a situation you'll want to avoid as a fantasy owner, unless of course you have the Chiefs' defense at your disposal.
E.J. Manuel, QB11/1/2013 1:53:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel has been participating in individual drills, but still shouldn't be expected to return until Week 10 or 11 at the earliest.
Insight: With the Bills out of any playoff picture, there is no reason to rush Manuel back into the lineup before he is completely ready. They could even wait until after their Week 12 bye.
Fred Jackson, RB11/1/2013 1:50:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson is still dealing with a sore knee, but is probable for Sunday's game against Kansas City.
Insight: Jackson and C.J. Spiller will likely share the backfield workload against the Chiefs which isn't a great situation for fantasy owners.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/31/2013 2:18:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller still hasn't been a full participant in practice, but coach Doug Marrone appears confident that he'll be ready to play on Sunday.
Insight: The return of Spiller would certainly help the Bills as they face the undefeated Chiefs. The combination of a tough KC run defense and having to split carries with Fred Jackson makes Spiller a flex option at best for Week 9.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/30/2013 8:36:00 PM
Description: Buffalo quarterback Thad Lewis (ribs) is expected to start Sunday's game against the Chiefs despite coach Doug Marrone saying he was 50-50 to play. SOURCE: ProFootballTalk.com
Insight: Lewis missed Wednesday's practice and could sit out again Thursday, but a league source said he's expected to play in Week 9. If Jeff Tuel or Matt Flynn start, fantasy owners should consider benching receiver Stevie Johnson.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/30/2013 4:56:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson (hip) didn't practice Wednesday but says he'll be ready for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: It seems Johnson is always dealing with some type of ailment but he usually suits up on Sunday. He's expected to practice on a limited basis Thursday, coach Doug Marrone said. Johnson has drawn 23 targets from Thad Lewis the last two games and caught 13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in that span.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/30/2013 3:54:00 PM
Description: Buffalo quarterback Thad Lewis sat out practice Wednesday because of a sore rib. SOURCE: Joe Buscaglia, WGR 550
Insight: Lewis played through the injury last week against the Saints so it doesn't look like he's in danger of missing Sunday's game against Kansas City. Given the strength of his opponent (the Chiefs have allowed the fourth-fewest passing yards in the NFL this season) we'd only recommend Lewis as an emergency bye week fill-in.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/28/2013 6:33:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller has a high ankle sprain, coach Doug Marrone revealed on Monday. SOURCE: WGR550.com
Insight: Marrone said he will wait to provide an update on Spiller's availability for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, but it doesn't look good at this point. Fred Jackson only had 45 yards on 15 carries Sunday against the Saints, making it four straight games in which he averaged 3.5 ypc or lower, but he scored his sixth touchdown of the season.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/28/2013 6:11:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson suffered a hip flexor injury Sunday and is expected to be a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR550.
Insight: It seems Johnson is always dealing with some type of ailment but he usually suits up on Sunday. The receiver has drawn 23 targets from Thad Lewis the last two games and caught 13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in that span.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/27/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: As expected, Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) won't be available Sunday versus the Saints. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL.com
Insight: If you have Fred Jackson in your lineup, please come to the window and collect your fantasy points. With Spiller in street clothes, F-Jax should be in for a monster game Sunday at the Superdome.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/25/2013 12:12:00 PM
Description: Bills RB C.J. Spiller missed another day of practice and is unlikely to be ready for Sunday's game.
Insight: His ankle has been bothering him for weeks. Spiller's absence makes backfield mate Fred Jackson a legitimate RB1 for Week 8 (if he wasn't already).
C.J. Spiller, RB10/24/2013 7:39:00 PM
Description: Joe Buscaglia of WGR 550 in Buffalo reports that Bills RB C.J. Spiller is unlikely to play this week against the Saints.
Insight: His ankle has been bothering him for weeks. Spiller's absence makes backfield mate Fred Jackson a legitimate RB1 for Week 8 (if he wasn't already).
C.J. Spiller, RB10/24/2013 2:07:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) did not practice Thursday.
Insight: Spiller has been playing through the injury, but not well. He needs to get healthy. Fantasy owners should not play him in Week 8, and perhaps the Bills shouldn't either.
Fred Jackson, RB10/24/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson is dealing with a sore knee, but is probable for Sunday's game against New Orleans.
Insight: Jackson, who didn't practice Wednesday, told the Buffalo News, "I'm fine. I’ll be ready to go Sunday." Given all the injuries and byes, Jackson is worthy of a fantasy start.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/20/2013 5:42:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson (back) returned to action Sunday against the Dolphins and drew 13 targets from Thad Lewis.
Insight: Johnson missed Week 6 with a back sprain but had six catches for 61 yards in his return to the field. He should continue to develop chemistry with Lewis and will make for a WR3 going forward.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/20/2013 5:39:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) had just six carries for 11 yards Sunday against the Dolphins.
Insight: Spiller also caught three balls for -4 yards. The running back is clearly ailing from his ankle sprain and the Bills are keeping him on a limited snap count. Fantasy owners should not play him in Week 8, and perhaps the Bills shouldn't either.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/18/2013 1:43:00 PM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson has practiced all week and will be ready to go Sunday against Miami.
Insight: Johnson had to go to California last week to attend a family member's funeral and missed the game with Cincinnati. With multiple quarterbacks in and out of the lineup, Johnson's fantasy value has dropped significantly. It may not return until E.J. Manuel gets under center.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/18/2013 1:40:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) was on the practice again Friday.
Insight: Coach Doug Marrone confirmed on Friday monring that Spiller would be on the field Sunday. However, the team has been content to let Spiller and Fred Jackson split carries and that should continue.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/17/2013 3:25:00 PM
Description: Bills QB Thad Lewis (sprained right foot) was a full participant in Thursday's practice and will start in Week 7.
Insight: It's a relief to fantasy owners of Stevie Johnson, Robert Woods and Scott Chandler as the other options would be Jeff Tuel or recently signed Matt Flynn.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/17/2013 2:21:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) returned to a limited practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday's session.
Insight: Spiller has played two games since suffering an ankle sprain so we doubt he'll miss Sunday's contest against the Dolphins. However, the team has been content to let Spiller and Fred Jackson split carries and that should continue.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/16/2013 7:01:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN.com, Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.
Insight: Spiller has played two games since suffering an ankle sprain so we doubt he'll miss Sunday's contest against the Dolphins. However, the team has been content to let Spiller and Fred Jackson split carries.
E.J. Manuel, QB10/16/2013 3:24:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel is still 4-to-6 weeks away from returning from the knee injury he suffered in Week 5 against Cleveland. SOURCE: Mike Rodak, ESPN
Insight: Thad Lewis was better than expected in his debut last week but it remains to be seen how long the team will stick with him now that Matt Flynn is on the roster. In Buffalo, only running backs C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson can be trusted for fantasy purposes.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/16/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Buffalo wideout Stevie Johnson sat out last week's loss to the Bengals but he should be back for Sunday's game against Miami. SOURCE: ESPN.com
Insight: Johnson had to go to California last week to attend a family member's funeral. He may not have played anyway because of a lumbar sprain in his back but it looks like he's on the mend. The 27-year-old averaged 61.5 yards per game in two meetings with the Dolphins in 2012.
Matt Flynn, QB10/14/2013 4:15:00 PM
Description: Former Raiders QB Matt Flynn has caught on with Buffalo.
Insight: He could get the start in Week 7 if Thad Lewis' foot injury ends up being serious. Flynn made one start for Oakland earlier in the year, completing 22 of 34 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown. He fumbled once with one interception.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/14/2013 4:11:00 PM
Description: Bills QB Thad Lewis has been diagnosed with a sprained right foot. SOURCE: NBC's Pro Football Talk
Insight: Lewis should be fine to play next week against the Dolphins, though Buffalo has signed former Raiders backup Matt Flynn in case he suffers a setback.
Kiko Alonso, LBHot10/13/2013 7:29:00 PM
Description: Buffalo linebacker Kiko Alonso led the team with 22 tackles on Sunday.
Insight: What a performance by the rookie out of Oregon. Alonso is on pace for 176 tackles this season. The league-leader in that stat only had 164 last season.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/13/2013 4:58:00 PM
Description: Buffalo quarterback Thad Lewis will get X-rays on his right foot.
Insight: Lewis was seen with his right foot in a walking boot following Sunday's overtime loss to the Bengals.
Jairus Byrd, S10/13/2013 11:51:00 AM
Description: Bills free safety Jairus Byrd will make his season debut Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Byrd missed Buffalo's first five games while dealing with plantar fasciitis. Andy Dalton would be wise to avoid Byrd's side of the field on Sunday.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/13/2013 11:42:00 AM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson won't play Sunday against Cincinnati.
Insight: Johnson suffered a lumbar sprain in Buffalo's Week 5 loss at Cleveland. He wasn't likely to have a big week anyway with Thad Lewis making his first career start at quarterback. Sunday marks Johnson's first absence since 2009.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/13/2013 10:47:00 AM
Description: Though no official announcement has been made, it looks like Buffalo halfback C.J. Spiller should be good to go Sunday versus Cincinnati. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL.com
Insight: Spiller has been battling an ankle issue for a few weeks but it hasn't caused him to miss any games and we're guessing that trend will continue on Sunday. Spiller started the year as the Bills' lead back but has since been demoted to a timeshare with veteran Fred Jackson. With the unproven Thad Lewis at quarterback, there should be enough carries to go around.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/10/2013 4:21:00 PM
Description: Bills coach Doug Marrone said it is going to be a "tough call" as to whether receiver Stevie Johnson (back) plays Sunday against the Bengals. SOURCE: Buffalo News
Insight: Johnson suffered a lumbar sprain in his back last week and has missed practices while tending to a death in the family in California. "I really don't know until he comes back and we're able to talk with him and see how he feels," Marrone said. "It's quite a long travel for him, to Oakland and back, so I really don't know." Johnson is a risky WR3 even if he plays -- Thaddeus Lewis will start at QB, and Johnson cannot be counted on to make it through a full game.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/9/2013 3:13:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) is practicing Wednesday, though with a slight limp, according to Bills' reporter Joe Buscaglia.
Insight: Spiller is getting healthier, but even at 100 percent he'll share the backfield with Fred Jackson who has outgained Spiller by a 462-325 yardage margin.
Dustin Hopkins, K10/7/2013 2:51:00 PM
Description: Bills kicker Dustin Hopkins was placed on injured reserve due to a groin injury.
Insight: Hopkins had not kicked all season because of the injury and Dan Carpenter will continue to man the position. Carpenter is 11-of-12 this season.
Thaddeus Lewis, QB10/7/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Buffalo signed quarterback Thad Lewis off their practice squad and have announced he'll be the team's starter against Cincinnati in Week 6, jumping over rookie Jeff Tuel.
Insight: Lucky Lewis. The Bengals defense just snapped Tom Brady's 52-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass and have yielded just 17.4 ppg.
E.J. Manuel, QB10/4/2013 8:47:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel is expected to miss "six weeks or so" due to an LCL sprain, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Insight: There have been several reports of Manuel's timetable saying he could miss anywhere from 4-8 weeks. The Bills could consider free agents Josh Freeman or Vince Young for the starting job. Young was with the team as a backup last season.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/4/2013 4:15:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson left Thursday's game against the Browns with a back injury, but is expected to be fine for the team's next game in nine days.
Insight: Johnson was diagnosed with a lumbar strain according to the team's web site. Buffalo's bigger issue heading into Week 6 is at quarterback now that E.J. Manuel is out indefinitely with an LCL sprain.
E.J. Manuel, QB10/4/2013 2:36:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss a few games due to a sprained LCL, but should return to play quarterback this season, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia.
Insight: Manuel took a shot to the knee after scrambling for a first down in the third quarter Thursday night. Jeff Tuel is the only quarterback on the roster, so unless they make a move, he'll be the Bills starter for a while. Reduce wideouts Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods value until Manuel returns to the lineup.
E.J. Manuel, QB10/3/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel left Thursday's game against the Browns with a right knee injury.
Insight: Manuel took a shot to the knee after scrambling for a first down in the third quarter. He was walking around on the sidelines in an effort to test his knee out but went to the locker room shortly thereafter. Browns QB Brian Hoyer also left the game with a knee injury, so the fourth quarter will end up being a battle of Brandon Weeden versus Jeff Tuel if Manuel is unable to return.
Stevie Johnson, WR10/3/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson left Thursday's game against the Browns with a back injury and is doubtful to return, according to buffalonews.com.
Insight: Johnson was limited in practice this week due to a hamstring injury, but it's the back that's giving him trouble.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/3/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) is active for Thursday's game against the Browns.
Insight: Spiller made good progress with his sprained ankle this week, but he's still an extremely risky fantasy option. He has been outplayed by Fred Jackson in all four games, is dealing with the injury and will face a Browns team that has allowed the lowest yards per carry in the NFL this season at 2.9. It's tough to sit a first-round pick, but fantasy owners should strongly consider it Thursday.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/3/2013 4:59:00 PM
Description: According to Stacey Dales of NFL Network, Buffalo coach Doug Marrone said the Bills "feel good" about C.J. Spiller's status for Thursday's game against the Browns.
Insight: "I think we feel good, think he'll be out there," Marrone said. "He's done a good job this week." Spiller has been outplayed by Fred Jackson in all four games, is dealing with an ankle sprain and will face a Browns team that has allowed the lowest yards per carry in the NFL this season at 2.9. It's tough to sit a first-round pick, but fantasy owners should strongly consider it Thursday.
Tashard Choice, RB10/2/2013 1:38:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Tashard Choice is currently the healthiest back on the Bills' roster.
Insight: If C.J. Spiller or Fred Jackson, or both, aren't ready to go Thursday, Choice could be a viable option. Fantasy owners desperate for running back help should check back when inactives are announced for the Bills-Browns game.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/1/2013 7:54:00 PM
Description: Despite initial reports claiming otherwise, Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) was announced as a non-participant at Tuesday's practice. SOURCE: Joe Buscaglia, WGR550
Insight: Spiller was on the practice field Tuesday but he didn't do enough to get a limited practice tag. The running back said Monday that his ankle was less swollen than expected, but he's questionable for Thursday's game and will likely be a game-time decision.
Fred Jackson, RB10/1/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson practiced in a limited capacity Monday after spraining his MCL Sunday against Baltimore, but is more likely to play than starter C.J. Spiller (ankle).
Insight: Jackson isn't concerned about the injury though he may wear a knee brace and fully expects to play Thursday night against the Browns.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/1/2013 11:46:00 AM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) was not part of Monday's walk-through and is questionable for Thursday's game at Cleveland.
Insight: Spiller said it may be "tough" for him to play on a short week after suffering an ankle injury Sunday against the Ravens. backup Fred Jackson was also injured in Sunday's game, but appears that he will be ready to play by Thursday.
Fred Jackson, RB9/30/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: Buffalo halfback Fred Jackson practiced in a limited capacity Monday after spraining his MCL Sunday against Baltimore.
Insight: Jackson isn't concerned about the injury and fully expects to play Thursday night against the Browns. C.J. Spiller is also banged up so Johnson should see a heavy workload in Week 5.
Fred Jackson, RB9/29/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson sprained his MCL Sunday against the Ravens, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: He expects to play Thursday. Jackson also suffered a sprained ligament in his knee last season but says this one isn't as significant. The veteran has outplayed C.J. Spiller in all four games this season and could be in for a full workload if Spiller missed Thursday's game with an ankle sprain.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/29/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) expressed some doubt that he'll be ready to play Thursday night at Cleveland, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: Spiller said it may be "tough" for him to play on a short week after suffering an ankle injury Sunday against the Ravens. The running back was able to briefly return to Sunday's game after getting his ankle taped. He has been a monumental fantasy bust this season, producing just 230 rushing yards, 29 receiving yards and no touchdowns in four games and getting outplayed by Fred Jackson.
Kiko Alonso, LBHot9/29/2013 6:41:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso is off to a hot start. His interception of Joe Flacco late in Sunday's win over Baltimore was his fourth of the season.
Insight: Alonso had five tackles and two interceptions in the contest. A second-round pick out of Oregon, Alonso looks like the early favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/29/2013 3:55:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (ankle) returned to Sunday's game.
Insight: Spiller exited in the third quarter with a left ankle injury but he came back in after getting it taped up.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/29/2013 3:30:00 PM
Description: Buffalo halfback C.J. Spiller suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Ravens. His return is questionable.
Insight: Spiller will depart with 65 yards rushing on 21 carries. The veteran Fred Jackson (seven rushes, 44 yards and a touchdown) will take over the rushing load while Spiller is sidelined.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/27/2013 2:02:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (quad) was a full participant in practice again on Friday and there should be no question that he'll play on Sunday versus Baltimore.
Insight: Spiller suffered a quad injury Sunday against the Jets. He has not lived up to lofty expectations so far and has actually been outplayed by 32-year-old Fred Jackson which means he may have to yield a few extra carries to his running mate.
Stevie Johnson, WR9/27/2013 2:00:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday and was limited both Thursday and Friday, but is expected to play Sunday against Baltimore.
Insight: Rookie QB E.J. Manuel has been better than expected and Johnson has hauled in 17 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 29 targets this season.
Stevie Johnson, WR9/26/2013 12:48:00 PM
Description: According to Joe Buscaglia of WGR550.com, Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday.
Insight: Johnson was held out of Wednesday's practice as a precaution but should play Sunday against the Ravens. Rookie QB E.J. Manuel has been better than expected and Johnson has hauled in 17 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 29 targets this season.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/26/2013 11:33:00 AM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller (quad) fully participated in practice Wednesday.
Insight: Spiller suffered a quad injury Sunday against the Jets but he'll be ready for Week 4 against the Ravens. Spiller has not lived up to lofty expectations so far and has actually been outplayed by 32-year-old Fred Jackson. In three games, the 26-year-old has run for 153 yards on 43 carries (3.6 ypc) and fumbled three times, losing one. Fantasy owners should buy low on the big-play back, as he's not going to be contained for much longer.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/23/2013 2:45:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller should be fine for next Sunday, according to head coach Doug Marrone.
Insight: He suffered a quad injury after an ugly first half in which he rushed for just nine yards. Spiller has not lived up to lofty expectations through three games and is likely to start sharing a bigger portion of the rushing attempts with backup Fred Jackson.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/22/2013 7:10:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller will not return to Sunday's game due to a knee injury.
Insight: This adds injury to insult for fantasy owners, as Spiller had 10 total yards on 11 touches (10 carries, one catch) before leaving the game. He has not lived up to lofty expectations through three games.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/22/2013 6:55:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller has a knee injury and is questionable to return Sunday against the Jets, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.
Insight: Spiller had 10 total yards on 11 touches (10 carries, one catch) before leaving the game. He has not lived up to lofty expectations through three games.
Leodis McKelvin, DB9/22/2013 5:15:00 PM
Description: Bills CB Leodis McKelvin left Sunday's game with a hamstring injury and will not return.
Insight: The Bills are now very thin in the secondary with Jarius Byrd and Stephon Gilmore also sidelined.
Robert Woods, WR9/18/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Robert Woods started in Week 2 ahead of T.J. Graham and Woods was on the field for 71 of 75 offensive plays.
Insight: Woods was targeted six times and caught four passes for 68 yards while Graham saw just three targets. The rookie's fantasy value is climbing and if fellow rookie E.J. Manuel turns out to be the real deal, Woods' value will continue to rise.
Fred Jackson, RB9/15/2013 6:33:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson wasn't anything special Sunday versus Carolina.
Insight: The Panthers held Jackson to just 30 yards on 12 carries. Buffalo's running back workload has been a 60/40 split through the first two games.
Stevie Johnson, WR9/15/2013 6:07:00 PM
Description: Stevie Johnson was the hero Sunday in Buffalo's last second win over Carolina.
Insight: Of Johnson's eight catches, none was bigger than his two-yard touchdown reception with two seconds left in the fourth quarter. Johnson has now scored touchdowns in back-to-back games for the sixth time in his career. The Buffalo wideout is well on his way to his fourth-straight 1,000-yard receiving season.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/15/2013 5:27:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller was on his way to a second straight disappointing fantasy week but then he busted out a 46-yard gain with less than nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to cross over 100 yards rushing against the Carolina Panthers.
Insight: Spiller finished with 103 yards on 16 carries and caught four passes for 26 yards. He had just 55 yards from scrimmage and lost a fumble on 22 touches in Week 1.
Jairus Byrd, S9/15/2013 11:47:00 AM
Description: Plantar fasciitis will keep All-Pro free safety Jairus Byrd out for a second straight week.
Insight: The Bills were gashed for 288 passing yards in Week 1 and it could be the same deal Sunday versus Cam Newton. No timetable has been given for Byrd's return.
Marquise Goodwin, WR9/9/2013 8:03:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie Marquise Goodwin suffered a broken hand Sunday against New England. SOURCE: Chris Brown, Bills.com
Insight: He's out indefinitely. Goodwin went undrafted in most fantasy leagues so this won't affect many rosters.
Ron Brooks, CB9/9/2013 2:58:00 PM
Description: Bills defensive back Ron Brooks is expected to need foot surgery and is out indefinitely, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia.
Insight: Buffalo is already missing Stephon Gilmore and is very thin in the defensive backfield and still has another date with Tom Brady along with games against Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.
Fred Jackson, RB9/8/2013 6:11:00 PM
Description: Buffalo halfback Fred Jackson totaled 108 yards from scrimmage Sunday in a loss to New England.
Insight: He led the Bills with 67 yards rushing on 13 carries. Jackson was expected to play a smaller role in Buffalo's offense after the emergence of C.J. Spiller at the end of last season but if he keeps this up, the Bills' rushing distribution could be closer to a 50/50 split. We'll have to see how he does next week at home against Carolina.
Marquise Goodwin, WR9/8/2013 3:08:00 PM
Description: Bills third-round pick Marquise Goodwin hurt his hand Sunday against New England and will not return.
Insight: The rookie made one catch for zero yards before exiting. Even when healthy, Goodwin's fantasy value is minimal.
Jairus Byrd, S9/4/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Updating a previous report, it appears that Bills All-Pro safety Jairus Byrd will not be able to play through plantar fasciitis.
Insight: At least not at first. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, he's doubtful for Sunday's game against New England. With Byrd out of the picture, Pats QB Tom Brady should have a field day in Week 1.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/4/2013 10:23:00 AM
Description: In a surprise move, the Bills have opted to start E.J. Manuel Week 1 against the Patriots.
Insight: The surprise isn't that Manuel is getting the start over Jeff Tuel. That's a no-brainer. What's surprising is that Manuel is ready to start just two weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Manuel performed well in the preseason but there's no doubt Bill Belichick will make things difficult for him in Week 1. He's probably not worthy of an Opening Day start.
Jairus Byrd, S9/1/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: Bills free safety Jairus Byrd is dealing with a case of plantar fasciitis. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL Network
Insight: He'll be able to play through it, though he may not be as agile as he has been in years past. Byrd, a free agent at the end of this year, has been invited to the Pro Bowl twice during his four years in Buffalo.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/1/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Bills QB E.J. Manuel returned to practice on Sunday. The rookie from Florida State had a knee scope two weeks ago. SOURCE: Adam Caplan, ESPN
Insight: Buffalo will decide on Manuel's Week 1 status this Wednesday. If Manuel isn't ready, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel will get the start against the Patriots.
Rian Lindell, K8/31/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Longtime Bills kicker Rian Lindell will be the kicker in Tampa Bay after the Bucs placed Lawrence Tynes on the reserve/non-football illness list.
Insight: Lindell nailed 21 of his 24 attempts last season but the longest kick he made was only from 50 yards out.
