Buffalo Bills Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Scott Chandler, TE11/24/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler caught a touchdown during Monday's win against the Jets.
Insight: It was his second score of the season, and he had three catches for 28 yards. Chandler is a TE2 at best.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/24/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: Bills wideout Sammy Watkins did not do much on Monday.
Insight: He saw only five targets and caught three of them, for 35 yards. Look for Watkins to rebound in Week 13.
Robert Woods, WR11/24/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Robert Woods had a big night on Monday.
Insight: He had nine receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. Woods is a little too inconsistent is still a borderline WR3.
Fred Jackson, RB11/24/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson scored a touchdown on Monday night.
Insight: He rushed 10 times for 32 yards, and had three catches for 13 yards. Jackson will continue to split time, and should be considered an RB3.
Anthony Dixon, RB11/24/2014 10:05:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon led the team in rushing during Week 12.
Insight: He had 12 carries for 54 yards and a score, along with one catch for eight yards. Dixon should continue to see snaps, but is more of an RB3.
Kyle Orton, QB11/24/2014 10:04:00 PM
Description: It was Bills quarterback Kyle Orton played very well during Monday's win against the Jets.
Insight: He threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Orton spreaded the ball around nicely, as eight different players had a reception.
Fred Jackson, RB11/24/2014 5:47:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) is officially active for Monday night's game against the Jets.
Insight: He will probably see the majority of the touches, but Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon will also be mixed in.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/19/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: The Jets and Bills contest for Week 12 at Ralph Wilson Stadium is still expected to begin at 1 PM ET on Sunday, despite the threat of a severe snowstorm.
Insight: There is expected to be seven feet of snow on the ground by kickoff, but for now it is scheduled to start on time. If there is a change, the NFL will most likely announce it by Thursday afternoon.
Chris Hogan, WR11/14/2014 9:33:00 AM
Description: With Sammy Watkins blanketed by Brent Grimes, Bills wide receiver Chris Hogan was a major factor again this week.
Insight: Hogan caught seven of nine targets for a team-leading 74 yards. He's caught five or more balls in four of the last five games.
Sammy Watkins, WRCold11/14/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins caught only three passes for 32 yards.
Insight: He was targeted seven times, but Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes basically took him out of the game. Watkins is still dealing with a groin issue.
Kyle Orton, QBCold11/14/2014 9:28:00 AM
Description: It was Bills quarterback Kyle Orton's worst production of the season after five solid games of work.
Insight: Orton was just 22-of-39 for 193 yards and couldn't get the Bills into the end zone. The Dolphins defense is playing as well as anyine, so we think Orton will return to low-end status next game.
Bryce Brown, RB11/14/2014 9:25:00 AM
Description: Bills running back Bryce Brown saw 13 touches, most of them in the passing game.
Insight: brown rushed six times for just 14 yards, but caught seven of 10 targets for 57 yards. If we had to choose between Brown and Anthony Dixon we'd choose Brown as the fantasy option.
Anthony Dixon, RB11/14/2014 9:23:00 AM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon led the team in attempts and rushing during Week 11.
Insight: He carried the ball 10 times for just 35 yards and couldn't get anything going against a tough Dolphins defense.
Bryce Brown, RB11/13/2014 7:30:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Bryce Brown will be the team's starter on Thursday night.
Insight: The title should not mean much, as both Anthony Dixon and Brown will be mixed in. However, if owners need to play one, we like Brown's potential.
Fred Jackson, RB11/13/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) is officially out for Thursday's game against Miami.
Insight: Jackson took to twitter to make the announcement, himself. Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown will continue to fill in, but neither player is more than an RB3, against the solid run-defense of the Dolphins. Jackson will now 10 days to get ready for Week 12.
Bryce Brown, RB11/13/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown could be a useful option now that Fred Jackson has been ruled out for Week 11.
Insight: Brown would share the workload with Anthony Dixon, but Brown is the more explosive and better receiver.
Fred Jackson, RB11/13/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson will not play Thursday against Miami, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.
Insight: His absence could make Bryce Brown a viable fantasy option because of his receiving skills.
Fred Jackson, RB11/12/2014 4:35:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Dolphins.
Insight: Jackson returned to the field last week and did not suffer a setback, so despite the questionable tag, he should continue to play through his groin injury. Jackson will likely lead the Bills in carries. Sammy Watkins is probable for Thursday.
Scott Chandler, TE11/9/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler had only 17 yards in Week 10.
Insight: He caught three passes, and is not a recommended option for the remainder of the season.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/9/2014 5:42:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins caught only four passes in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.
Insight: He was hampered by a groin injury, and produced only 27 yards. Watkins will look to get back on track Thursday against Miami.
Chris Hogan, WR11/9/2014 5:40:00 PM
Description: Bills wide receiver Chris Hogan shocked fantasy owners on Sunday afternoon.
Insight: He had five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. With Sammy Watkins dealing with a groin injury, many thought Robert Woods would produce on Sunday, and although he had six catches for 52 yards, it was Hogan who stole the show.
Fred Jackson, RB11/9/2014 5:36:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson played Sunday, but was ineffective.
Insight: Jackson had 10 rushing yards and 39 receiving yards, on four catches. Buffalo's backfield continues to be murky, making it extremely tough on fantasy owners.
Bryce Brown, RB11/9/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown produced in the receiving department on Sunday.
Insight: He led Buffalo with six catches and 65 receiving yards, which simply cannot be expected to continue. Brown is not a recommended play as the season progresses.
Anthony Dixon, RB11/9/2014 5:34:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon led the team in rushing during Week 10.
Insight: He had nine carries for 62 yards, but with Fred Jackson and Bryce Brown also getting touches, Buffalo's backfield looks as cloudy as ever.
Kyle Orton, QB11/9/2014 5:32:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton threw for 259 yards and a touchdown, during Sunday's loss to Kansas City.
Insight: He now has 10 touchdowns and three interceptions on the year, and has been a solid fantasy option, since taking over for E.J. Manuel.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/9/2014 11:51:00 AM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) is active against the Chiefs.
Insight: Starting Watkins is a tough call, as he pulled his groin this week in practice. With six teams on a bye, owners most likely will not have great options to replace Watkins, but should temper expectations on Sunday.
Fred Jackson, RB11/9/2014 11:49:00 AM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) is officially active Sunday versus Kansas City.
Insight: Groin injuries are always tough, but we'd like to think Jackson should see his normal amount of snaps. With all the byes this week, owners should start Jackson as they normally would, but expect Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown to be somewhat mixed in.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/7/2014 12:13:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) did not practice Thursday or Friday so we can't call him anything better than questionable.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during Wednesday's practice and could not finish the session. Most still expect him to play Sunday, but it would have been more comforting if we saw him on the practice field Friday. Fantasy owners who plan on starting him will have to wait for inactives an hour before game time to be sure he's a go.
Fred Jackson, RB11/7/2014 12:10:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) has been back at practice, but tagged as limited in all of them.
Insight: At this point despite the vague information from the team, we don't expect him to be ready for the Week 10 game against Kansas City. Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown should handle the workload.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/6/2014 2:36:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) did not practice Thursday.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during Wednesday's practice and could not finish the session. Most still expect him to play Sunday, but it will be more comforting if we see him on the practice field Friday.
Sammy Watkins, WR11/5/2014 2:47:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) was limited on Wednesday.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during practice and could not finish the session. This is not a good sign, but before we jump to any conclusions, we will await word to see if Watkins returns to practice on Thursday or Friday.
Fred Jackson, RB11/5/2014 1:04:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) returned to practice on Wednesday.
Insight: He was expected to miss four weeks, so this is good news for Jackson-owners. There is still no clarity on whether Jackson will suit up on Sunday, but this is clearly a step in the right direction.
C.J. Spiller, RB11/4/2014 10:59:00 AM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller thinks he can make it back from injury by the playoffs, according to Chris Brown of buffalobills.com.
Insight: Spiller has a broken collarbone and at the earliest might return for Week 16. That's not going to help fantasy owners.
Sammy Watkins, WR10/26/2014 5:27:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins had a nice afternoon, but made a big rookie mistake on Sunday.
Insight: Watkins had three catches for 157 yards and one touchdown, but fantasy owners will be talking about his 84-yard reception in the second quarter, as he thought he had a walk-in score. However, Watkins was caught from behind, leading to a two-yard Frank Summers touchdown-run.
Bryce Brown, RB10/26/2014 5:25:00 PM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown managed only seven carries for 15 yards in Sunday's win over the Jets.
Insight: He was clearly the backup tailback to Anthony Dixon, and unless something drastic changes, Brown will not hold any fantasy value.
Anthony Dixon, RB10/26/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon handled the majority of the running back workload on Sunday.
Insight: He had 22 carries, but produced only 44 yards, and did not contribute in the receiving game. Dixon is no more than an RB3, heading into Week 9.
Kyle Orton, QB10/26/2014 5:21:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton played his best game as a member of Buffalo, during Sunday's win against the Jets.
Insight: He was 10-of-17 for 238 yards and an impressive four touchdowns. Orton has vaulted himself to a borderline QB1, moving forward.
Robert Woods, WR10/26/2014 3:15:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Robert Woods left Sunday's game against the Jets with an apparent back injury.
Insight: He went into the locker room towards the end of the second quarter, and Buffalo is calling his return questionable. Before he went down, Woods had three receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Anthony Dixon, RB10/26/2014 11:40:00 AM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon will start at runing back Sunday against the Jets.
Insight: Fred Jackson is oficially inactive, and Dixon figures to get a decent amount of chances. However, we still like Bryce Brown as the tailback to produce the best fantasy numbers between the two, moving forward.
Bryce Brown, RB10/22/2014 1:13:00 PM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown was working with the second team in Wednesday's practice according to Bills reporter Mike Rodak.
Insight: Things could, of course, change over the next few days. Brown and Anthony Dixon figure to share the time and we think Brown is the more explosive of the two, but the bigger Dixon is likely to get the goal line work.
Anthony Dixon, RB10/22/2014 1:10:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon was working with Kyle Orton and the first team in Wednesday's practice, according to Bill reporter Mike Rodak.
Insight: Dixon and fellow running back Bryce Brown figure to share the time and we think Brown is the more explosive of the two, but the bigger Dixon is likely to get the goal line work.
C.J. Spiller, RB10/21/2014 2:15:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller was placed on injured reserve/designated for return.
Insight: Spiller has a broken collarbone and at the earliest might return for Week 16 if the Bills are still in the playoff hunt. Fantasy owners can safely job him.
Phillip Tanner, RB10/21/2014 2:00:00 PM
Description: Former Cowboys running back Phillip Tanner has been signed by the Buffalo Bills.
Insight: Not surprising that the Bills would go out an find a running back to replace C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. For fantasy owners he's just insurance behind Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon and has no fantasy value.
Bryce Brown, RB10/20/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown could end up being the big "winner" after injuries to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller.
Insight: It's up to Brown and Anthony Dixon to carry the Bills running game for the next few weeks and maybe the next month. We think Brown is the more likely every down back with Dixon the red zone guy.
Fred Jackson, RB10/20/2014 9:16:00 AM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson left Sunday's game against the Vikings with a groin injury and early estimates are from 2-4 weeks.
Insight: The running back had to be carted off the field. With C.J. Spiller out for the season, the Bills will turn to Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon.
Scott Chandler, TE10/19/2014 6:45:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler caught three passes for 36 yards on Sunday against the Vikings.
Insight: Chandler, like most tight ends, is sort of boom-or-bust. He will occasionally have a big game but will mostly sit between the 30-60 yard range.
Sammy Watkins, WR10/19/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught nine passes for 122 yards against the Vikings in Week 7.
Insight: Owners were likely frustrated with Watkins' poor performance against New England last week, but he was stuck on Revis Island. Back on the main land now, Watkins lit up the Vikings cornerbacks. Kyle Orton and Watkins seem to have great chemistry and it is getting better every week.
Boobie Dixon, RB10/19/2014 6:34:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries after C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson left Sunday's game with injuries.
Insight: Spiller could be out for some time with a broken collar bone. Jackson suffered an injury to his groin. Dixon and fellow running back Bryce Brown will be top waiver wire pickups this week if Jackson cannot go in Week 8.
Kyle Orton, QB10/19/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton led Buffalo back to defeat the Vikings, 17-16, on Sunday.
Insight: Orton was 31-for-43 with 283 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. He and Sammy Watkins seem to have really developed some nice chemistry.
C.J. Spiller, RBCold10/19/2014 2:37:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller had to be carted off the field on Sunday against the Vikings. UPDATE: Spiller has been diagnosed with a broke collarbone according to Jason La Confora of CBS Sports.
Insight: Spiller has a shoulder injury. We do not yet know if he will return. Fred Jackson is already out of the game with a groin injury.
Fred Jackson, RB10/19/2014 1:52:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson left Sunday's game against the Vikings with a groin injury.
Insight: Jackson is out for the game. The running back had to be carted off the field and his hands were covering his face. This gives C.J. Spiller an obvious fantasy boost.
C.J. Spiller, RBCold10/18/2014 7:37:00 PM
Description: Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett told ESPN he "wants to continue feeding" C.J. Spiller.
Insight: That slightly puts a damper on Fred Jackon's big game last week. Owners of either Bills running back should continue to expect a split backfield. Spiller played just 12 snaps last week, but in every previous game, he had at least 13 touches. He likely saw only 12 snaps against the Patriots last week because he lost a fumble.
Sammy Watkins, WR10/13/2014 5:29:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught just two passes for 27 yards in Week 6.
Insight: After seven catches in Kyle Orton's first start, Watkins was pretty disappointing as he failed to score three fantasy points. Who knows which receiver Kyle Orton will favor next week. On a positive note, Watkins could have struggled having to face Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis. Next week's matchup with the Vikings should be easier.
Robert Woods, WR10/13/2014 5:28:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Robert Woods was clearly Kyle Orton's favorite receiver in Week 6 against New England.
Insight: Orton favored Sammy Watkins in Week 5 versus Detroit as he led the team with seven catches, but Woods led Buffalo with seven receptions this Sunday. Woods also had 78 yards and a touchdown.
Scott Chandler, TE10/13/2014 5:24:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler was the leading receiver for Buffalo in Week 6 against the Patriots.
Insight: Chandler caught six passes for 105 yards. Kyle Orton looks very comfortable with Chandler as he only targeted receiver Robert Woods more than he targeted his tight end. Chandler is a solid TE1 in 12-team leagues going forward.
C.J. Spiller, RBCold10/13/2014 4:28:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller played just 12 of 69 snaps, according to the box score.
Insight: It wasn't long ago that he was supposed to be the fantasy darling who was going to be run until he puked. His fantasy value is minimal these days with Fred Jackson seeing 75 percent of the snaps and 14 touches to six against New England.
Kyle Orton, QB10/12/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton had a solid game against the Patriots.
Insight: He has now played well in both games he has started in 2014. Orton threw for 299 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception on Sunday. Consider him a QB2.
Fred Jackson, RB10/12/2014 5:21:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson again received more carries then fellow running back C.J. Spiller in Week 6.
Insight: Jackson only gained 26 yards on 10 carries and caught four passes for 17 more yards, but he did score a rushing touchdown. Jackson is proving he is the better back to own in the Bills backfield.
Mike Williams, WR10/12/2014 11:30:00 AM
Description: Bills wide receiver Mike Williams will not play Sunday.
Insight: Robert Woods will continue to start opposite Sammy Watkins. Williams had just one catch for eight yards last week and fantasy owners can ignore him.
Sammy Watkins, WR10/8/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is no longer on the Week 6 injury report.
Insight: Watkins is fully recovered from his rib injury according to ESPN. Watkins, however, has a tough matchup going up against Darrelle Revis and the Patriots this week.
Sammy Watkins, WR10/5/2014 6:13:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught seven balls for 87 yards in Kyle Orton's first start with the team on Sunday against the Lions.
Insight: Watkins led the team with 12 targets, which is a great sign since it appears Orton and Watkins have chemistry after just one week of practice. The receiver is still boom-or-bust but perhaps he will get more opportunities with Orton throwing to him.
Fred Jackson, RB10/5/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson was a bell cow for Buffalo on Sunday against the Lions.
Insight: Jackson led the team with 10 carries and 49 yards. He also tied Sammy Watkins with seven receptions and 58 yards. In addition, Jackson scored a two-point conversion. He briefly left the game but returned shortly afterwards. Jackson is the best play in the Buffalo backfield.
Fred Jackson, RB10/5/2014 4:06:00 PM
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson left Sunday's game against the Lions with a leg injury.
Insight: Jackson is questionable to return. Jackson had 18 touches for 108 yards before leaving.
Sammy Watkins, WRCold10/5/2014 12:19:00 PM
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is starting against the Lions on Sunday.
Insight: With veteran quarterback Kyle Orton, we would temper the expectations for Watkins this week, but apparently the new quarterback and Watkins have built some chemistry in the short time working together. Watkins' production can't get much worse than it was with E.J. Manuel.
E.J. Manuel, QBCold9/29/2014 3:58:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel has been demoted for Week 5 against Atlanta. Kyle Orton will get the start.
Insight: Although the Bills started 2-0, it was mainly on the strength of the defense and this is a move designed to win now. Manuel still has long-term value, though it may take time to rebuild his confidence.
Kyle Orton, QB9/29/2014 3:53:00 PM
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton has been named the starter over E.J. Manuel for Week 5 against Atlanta.
Insight: Orton is a solid backup, but not a fantasy starter anymore. In four games this season Manuel never threw for more than 238 yards and the change could perk up fantasy values across the board as the offense won't be limited with a veteran under center.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/28/2014 4:57:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller has decent day on Sunday.
Insight: He had 15 carries for 60 yards and three receptions for 24 yards, but continues to be handcuffed by Fred Jackson. Jackson finished the day with 33 rushing yards and six catches for 52 yards. If both players are in the lineup, they are both RB3/flex options at best.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/28/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel has up and down day against Houston.
Insight: He was 21-of-44 for 225, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He continues to be plagued by inconsistent play. Owners need to have better options at the quarterback position.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/21/2014 4:55:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel continues to struggle statistically and today it caught up with the Bills.
Insight: Manuel went 23-of-39 for 238 yards and one touchdown. The good news is he didn't throw an interception and has just one pick all season. The bad news is he's thrown just two touchdown passes in three games.
Sammy Watkins, WRCold9/21/2014 4:53:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught just two of eight targets for 19 yards.
Insight: Hey, this is what you signed on for when you drafted a rookie with a questionable second-year quarterback. It's going to be 100 yards one week and 20 yards the next.
Fred Jackson, RB9/21/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson was the productive back this week with C.J. Spiller disappointing his fantasy owners.
Insight: The 33-year-old Jackson rushed six times for 34 yards, but was a big part of the passing game with eight receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Robert Woods, WRCold9/16/2014 3:28:00 PM
Description: Buffalo receiver Robert Woods is second on the team in targets, but with just nine over the first two games.
Insight: Woods has five receptions for 83 yards and at 4.5 targets per game isn't likley to be a consistent fantasy-worthy wide receiver.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/16/2014 3:25:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel hasn't done a lot statistically, but he does have his Bills undeafeated.
Insight: He passed for one and rushed for one touchdown in the season opener, but he's only averaging 187.5 ypg through the air. He has a young receiving corps in which to grow with and we expect his yardage numbers will improve as the season goes along. At least until the weather turns ugly.
Fred Jackson, RB9/16/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson is still getting a similar workload as C.J. Spiller though he's yet to taste the end zone.
Insight: The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and usually gets more touchdown opportunities than Spiller to keep him fantasy-worthy. Without the touchdown advantage his fantasy value as a starter is questionable.
Sammy Watkins, WR9/14/2014 6:11:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught eight passes for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: Watkins was clearly E.J. Manuel's favorite target as he threw it in his direction 11 times. That's impressive considering Fred Jackson was next on the team with four targets. Watkins clearly proved he is talented enough to crack your fantasy lineups, but whether he is a reliable receiver all season will depend on Manuel's development.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/14/2014 6:04:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown against the Dolphins in Week 2.
Insight: Spiller is still not the focal point of the Buffalo rushing attack as Fred Jackson and Spiller each had 12 carries, but Spiller proved Sunday that he is the bigger splash player. He will be boom or bust all year long but his ceiling is much higher than Jackson's.
Stephon Gilmore, CB9/14/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is inactive against the Dolphins on Sunday.
Insight: This is somewhat surprising, considering Buffalo listed Gilmore as probable on Saturday. Even still, Buffalo played fairly well without him against the top wideouts from Chicago in Week 1.
Stephon Gilmore, CB9/13/2014 8:29:00 PM
Description: Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is listed as probable for Week 2.
Insight: Gilmore missed the season opener but should return against the Dolphins on Sunday. Gilmore is clearly the No. 1 CB for the Bills.
E.J. Manuel, QB9/13/2014 8:15:00 PM
Description: The Bills ran 22 of their 57 offensive plays in Week 1 from a zone-read formation.
Insight: Buffalo had the second most zone-read plays in the NFL last year so this isn't exactly a huge surprise. Doug Marrone certainly does not want to overuse his quarterback in the running game, but he should remain an important part of the team's rushing attack, especially in goal-line situations against the Dolphins. Miami will be without two of its starting linebackers on Sunday.
Sammy Watkins, WR9/7/2014 12:18:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) is active for Week 1.
Insight: Watkins fully returned to practice on Wednesday, so this is as expected. Watkins will be ready for the Bears, but with E.J. Manuel throwing him passes, he has a limited upside.
Stephon Gilmore, CB9/7/2014 12:10:00 PM
Description: Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Insight: The Bills are a sneaky defense/special teams start this year, but not in Week 1. They are on the road against a potent Bears offense. With Gilmore out, it confirms the fact that the Bills defense should be on your bench.
Bryce Brown, RB9/7/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Insight: It is clear now, at least for Week 1, that Doug Marrone will feature C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson and Anthony Dixon. As the week progressed, it sounded like Jackson would get the most carries, Dixon would be featured in goal-line situations and Spiller would receive the best opportunity to catch passes and return punts and kick offs.
Sammy Watkins, WR9/4/2014 3:03:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) practiced fully again on Thursday.
Insight: Watkins fully returned to practice on Wednesday, so this is the second straight day he practiced fully. Watkins will be ready for the Bears, but with E.J. Manuel throwing him passes, he has a very low ceiling.
C.J. Spiller, RB9/4/2014 11:41:00 AM
Description: C.J. Spiller will be the Bills' No. 1 kickoff returner this season according to buffalobills.com.
Insight: Although this sounds great from the outside, Spiller will likely see a drop in touches on the offense if he is indeed returning kicks. Featured running backs are never used on special teams. Conversely, Fred Jackson owners love hearing this because it reaffirms what we believed in preseason: Jackson will still have a major role in the Bills backfield this year.
Sammy Watkins, WR9/3/2014 2:29:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Watkins has suffered two rib injuries during training camp and the preseason. Its a bit of a concern but of more concern is the abysmal play of E.J. Manuel. Watkins fantasy value is limited by his quarterback's ability to get him the football.
Sammy Watkins, WR9/2/2014 11:03:00 AM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) was on the practice field Monday.
Insight: Watkins has suffered two rib injuries during training camp and the preseason. Its a bit of a concern that he's not getting better, but of more concern to fantasy owners is the abysmal play of E.J. Manuel which limits Watkins' upside.
T.J. Graham, WR8/30/2014 9:18:00 PM
Description: Bills' backup wide receiver T.J. Graham had 31 catches as a rookie, but didn't progress in 2013 and won't get a chance in 2014 as the Bills waived him Saturday.
Insight: The team tried to trade him but found no trading partners. With the additions for Sammy Watkins and Mike Williams in the offseason the writing was on the wall.
Kyle Orton, QB8/30/2014 1:48:00 PM
Description: Quarterback Kyle Orton was signed by the Buffalo Bills
Insight: Orton is a solid backup, but not a starter anymore. Hoperfully this isn't a sign the team is concerned about E.J. Manuel's ability to run the offense.
E.J. Manuel, QB8/28/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 3-of-7 passes for 56 yards in the Bills' preseason finale Thursday night.
Insight: With most starters not playing in the fourth preseason game across the league, the fact Manuel played speaks volumes as to how worried the Bills coaching staff probably is about their second-year quarterback. Manuel finished the preseason 50-of-82 for 517 yards, one touchdown, three turnovers and six sacks taken.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/28/2014 7:53:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Thursday's preseason finale with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins suffered the injury on a slant pattern where quarterback E.J. Manuel "stared him down" and then over threw him by "a good yard and a half". It's unclear if this is a reaggravation of his previous injury or if this is a new rib injury for Watkins. The receiver suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game.
Dustin Hopkins, K8/25/2014 11:14:00 AM
Description: Bills kicker Dustin Hopkins has been waived.
Insight: Hopkins had not kicked all last season because of injury and Dan Carpenter hit 33-of-36 attempts ( 91.7 percent) so this was the expected outcome.
E.J. Manuel, QB8/23/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Manuel probably didn't play quite as well as his stat line indicates. Even though the interception wasn't his fault because intented target, Scott Chandler, fell down, Manuel threw a couple other near interceptions by throwing into double coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that the Tampa Bay defense returned for a touchdown. Buffalo gained only 82 yards in the first half. A lot of Manuel's production came against the second string Tampa Bay defense in the third quarter.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/19/2014 8:44:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) returned to practice Tuesday, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: Watkins suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/17/2014 2:56:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, called a bruise by the Buffalo News.
Insight: That's a lot better than broken, but figure the rookie receiver to sit out for a while. Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Fred Jackson, RB8/17/2014 1:02:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had another busy game, rushing six times for 27 yards and catching seven balls for 28 yards.
Insight: C.J. Spiller had six touches. The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and he gets the goal-line opportunites which limits Spillers' fantasy value and keeps Jackson as a viable fantasy option.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/16/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, but Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that he is fine.
Insight: Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel. He's a high-upside WR3 who comes with a seventh-round ADP.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/16/2014 7:52:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins will have his ribs examined and we should know more soon.
Sammy Watkins, WR8/9/2014 9:50:00 AM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught three balls for 21 yards,
Insight: That's a big improvement over the Hall of Fame game where he was shut out of the box score but he's not inspiring must confidence that he can become a fantasy-worthy receiver in his first season.
Bryce Brown, RB8/9/2014 9:47:00 AM
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown looks good Friday night rushing for 64 yards and catching two balls for another 18 yards.
Insight: Brown is showing he can handle the duties if needed, but isn't likely to have any fantasy value unless C.J. Spiller or Fred Jackson go down to injury.
Scott Chandler, TE8/5/2014 8:47:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler returned to practice Tuesday after missing more than a week due to a groin injury.
Insight: Chandler sat out the preseason opener on Sunday. He has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant in 2014.
Marquise Goodwin, WR8/2/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Buffalo wideout Marquise Goodwin injured his hamstring in Friday's practice.
Insight: Goodwin went undrafted in most fantasy leagues last year, but was fighting for the No. 3 spot with Mike Williams this season behind starters Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.
Fred Jackson, RB7/30/2014 6:05:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson has signed a one-year extension worth $2.6 million.
Insight: Jackson is now signed for the next two seasons. The extension is a sign that the team isn't ready to phase out the 33-year-old Jackson from the offense even though C.J. Spiller is healthy and the Bills acquired Bryce Brown. Jackson had 253 touches last season and scored 10 touchdowns. He'll probably see closer to 200 this season but still has RB2 upside because of his goal-line work.
Scott Chandler, TE7/27/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler suffered a groin injury on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Insight: Tony Moeaki went down with a hamstring injury on Friday and Chris Gragg spent two days in the hospital with heat-related cramps. Chandler has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant.
C.J. Spiller, RB7/16/2014 4:37:00 PM
Description: According to buffalobills.com, C.J. Spiller is likely to touch the ball 20 times per game "if the offense is operating at peak efficiency."
Insight: The Bills also said last year that Spiller would get the ball until he threw up and then gave him 15.7 touches per game, so we aren't buying he's going to be a 320-touches-per-year guy even if he's 100 percent healthy. Fred Jackson is still around to steal third-down work and goal-line carries and the Bills added Bryce Brown in case the 33-year-old Jackson finally hits a wall. At most, Spiller will get 275 touches this season. He's being drafted 16th among running backs on fantasyfootballcalculator.com, so while he's not as risky as last season he still a high-risk, high-reward option.
Kiko Alonso, LBHot7/2/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Insight: Alonso suffered the injury while working out in Oregon. The 2013 second-round pick had 159 tackles, two sacks, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble as a rookie and is a huge loss for an up-and-coming defense.
Kevin Kolb, QB7/1/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: Free agent quarterback Kevin Kolb hurt any chances of latching on for the upcoming season after being arrested for boating while intoxicated last weekend.
Insight: Stops in Philadelphia, Arizona and Buffalo have proven he can't lead an offense to the playoffs, so at this point we expect his career is pretty much over.
Bryce Brown, RB5/10/2014 6:00:00 PM
Description: The Eagles traded running back Bryce Brown to the Buffalo Bills for a conditional 2015 fourth-round draft pick.
Insight: Brown struggled to provide Philadelphia with a consistent backup running back to star rusher LeSean McCoy in 2013, which is one of the reasons McCoy had to carry the ball 314 times. Philadelphia then acquired Darren Sproles in the offseason. Brown will serve as a third-stringer to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in 2014.
Sammy Watkins, WR5/8/2014 8:50:00 PM
Description: Buffalo traded up to draft Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins with the fourth pick in Thursday night's NFL Draft.
Insight: This was originally supposed to be Cleveland's pick. Watkins finished fifth in FBS last season with 1,464 receiving yards in 13 games. Having Watkins to throw to will make E.J. Manuel's life a lot easier.
E.J. Manuel, QB4/22/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel (January knee surgery), was a full participant in Tuesday's OTA.
Insight: Manuel finished his rookie year with 1,972 yards, 11 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 186 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 10 games. With only Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel and Dennis Dixon on the roster, the Bills need a completely healthy Manuel to compete in 2014.
Anthony Dixon, RB3/15/2014 9:31:00 AM
Description: Running back Anthony Dixon has agreed to a deal with the Buffalo Bills.
Insight: This move won't improve his fantasy value. Last year he was stuck behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, this season its C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. Same problem, different team.
Scott Chandler, TE3/13/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: Tight end Scott Chandler is staying with the Bills on a two-year contract, according to Adam Schefter.
Insight: Chandler set career highs with 53 catches and 655 yards last season but dropped to just two touchdowns after catching six in each of the previous two years.
Dan Carpenter, K3/11/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Buffalo place-kicker Dan Carpenter will stay with the Bills in 2014.
Insight: Carpenter was solid going 33-of-36 (91.7 percent) and 32-of-32 on extra points last season. He was 4-of-6 from 50-yards and beyond so obviously has plenty of leg.
Jairus Byrd, S3/4/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: The Bills chose not to use their franchise tag on star safety Jairus Byrd. SOURCE: BuffaloBills.com
Insight: Though he's sure to be highly coveted in free agency, Byrd remains open to signing with Buffalo. Byrd has amassed 22 interceptions over his last five seasons in Western New York.
Jairus Byrd, S3/2/2014 3:13:00 PM
Description: Contract talks have broken down between the Bills and safety Jairus Byrd. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Buffalo has less than 24 hours to decide what to do with its franchise tag. If the tag is used on Byrd, the three-time Pro Bowler will earn $8.4 million in 2014. If not, he'll become a free agent. Byrd led the team with four interceptions in 2013 even after missing the first five games with plantar fasciitis.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/29/2013 3:19:00 PM
Description: Buffalo will be without Stevie Johnson in Week 17.
Insight: Johnson missed last week's game to be with his family after his mother passed away. He'll sit out this week as well. Johnson's absence should open up more targets for rookies Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. As usual, Buffalo will rely heavily on its ground game with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson splitting carries.
Thad Lewis, QB12/27/2013 7:57:00 PM
Description: Bills QB Thad Lewis will make another start Sunday against New England.
Insight: E.J. Manuel is done for the year with a sprained knee. While Lewis hasn't been a total disaster this season (3 TD, 77.8 QB rating in five games), he certainly can't be trusted in championship week. Leave him on the waiver wire where he belongs.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/27/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel has been ruled out for Week 17, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia. Thad Lewis will start for a second straight game.
Insight: Manuel has sprained both knees in the last three months and will finish his rookie year with 1,972 yards, 11 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 186 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 10 games.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/26/2013 12:25:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel has been practicing the week and is questionable for Sunday's game against New England, according to Bills beat reporter Joe Buscaglia.
Insight: He sprained his knee two week's ago versus Jacksonville. We should know more after coach Doug Marrone talks to the media as to whether it will be Manuel or Thad Lewis at the controls in Week 17.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/23/2013 5:35:00 PM
Description: Bills receiver Stevie Johnson (personal) may not be available for Week 17 against the Patriots, according to buffalobills.com.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away on Dec. 14 and he missed Week 16. The funeral will come on Dec. 27, so Johnson will probably miss practice all week.
Fred Jackson, RB12/22/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had 19 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over Miami. He confirmed after the game that he played through broken ribs, according to the Buffalo News.
Insight: C.J. Spiller carried the football 20 times, but once again Jackson outperformed him as Spiller had 77 yards. The 32-year-old Jackson has rushed for 836 yards and eight touchdowns on 193 carries and caught 44 passes for 334 receiving yards and one touchdown this season.
Robert Woods, WR12/22/2013 3:06:00 PM
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Robert Woods was ejected from Sunday's game against the Dolphins for throwing a punch.
Insight: Woods caught a 57-yard pass in the first half and had three catches for 70 yards on five targets in the game. The Bills are without Stevie Johnson (personal), Woods and Marquise Goodwin (knee).
Stevie Johnson, WR12/20/2013 1:22:00 PM
Description: Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson won't play in Week 16 against Miami after the death of his mother.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away Saturday and he played Sunday (one catch for four yards), but flew back to California to be with his family earlier this week. Given that the Bills have nothing to play for, this is completely understandable.
Stevie Johnson, WR12/18/2013 5:22:00 PM
Description: Bills coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Stevie Johnson to play in Week 16 against Miami after the death of his mother.
Insight: Johnson's mother passed away Saturday, but he chose to play Sunday against the Jaguars. He flew back to California to be with his family earlier this week.
E.J. Manuel, QB12/18/2013 3:44:00 PM
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel won't be on the field Sunday against Miami.
Insight: He sprained his knee last week versus Jacksonville and still has a lot of swelling. Thad Lewis will get the start under center.
C.J. Spiller, RB12/1/2013 7:50:00 PM
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller had a 77-yard run early in Sunday's game against the Falcons and finished with a season-high 149 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Insight: Coming off the Week 12 bye, Spiller may finally be fully healthy after playing through an ankle sprain for several weeks. He's back on the RB2 radar, though he's best used as a flex play given his boom-or-bust nature.
