Fantasy MLB
Baltimore Orioles Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Miguel Gonzalez, SP9/21/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez suffers loss to Boston on Sunday.
Insight: He had seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, and gave up three runs during that span. Baltimore's offense could not muster enough today, as Gonzalez fell to 9-9 with a 3.33 ERA.
Adam Jones, CF9/21/2014 11:11:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones getting the day off Sunday.
Insight: After an impressive, two-homerun game, Jones will get a much deserved day of rest today. He will be back in the lineup next time out, and must be inserted into lineups, once he is back in there.
Chris Tillman, SPHot9/20/2014 10:29:00 PM
Description: Baltimore gets another quality start from Chris Tillman.
Insight: Now at 13-5, with a 3.26 ERA, Tillman went seven innings of two-run ball, striking out six and walking two. He has rewarded fantasy owners, who took a flier on him late in drafts, in 2014.
Adam Jones, CF9/20/2014 10:27:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones had a monster game Saturday versus Boston.
Insight: He clubbed his 26th and 27th homeruns of the season, to go along with 4 RBI. Jones is now hitting .285 with 91 RBI, and is firmly in the MVP discussion.
Nick Markakis, RF9/19/2014 4:26:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder and leadoff hitter Nick Markakis is not in Friday's starting lineup.
Insight: Markakis has been dealing with a shoulder issue that also kept him out of Wednesday's game. The outfielder has been solid, if unspectacular, for Baltimore batting .272 with 12 HR, 44 RBI, 76 runs scored and four steals.
Adam Jones, CF9/19/2014 4:23:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is not in Friday's starting lineup.
Insight: Baltimore is expected to rest some of the guys down the stretch though they are only two losses behind the Angels for the best record in the AL. Another productive season for Jones - batting .284 with 25 HR, 87 RBI and 84 runs scored.
Steve Pearce, RF9/18/2014 2:05:00 PM
Description: Orioles 1B/OF Steve Pearce hit a pair of home runs for four RBI to help Baltimore defeat Toronto on Wednesday.
Insight: The Orioles just keep on chugging along in large part due to Pearce's bat. The pair of home runs brings his total to 20 on the season. He also has 25 doubles, 48 RBI and 50 runs in just 323 at-bats. Pearce also has hits in his last nine games.
Bud Norris, SPHot9/17/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris heads into Tuesday's start on a tear.
Insight: He is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA over his past three starts. Norris also has been fantastic at home this year, with a 7-2 record and 2.62 ERA. Get him in your lineup, if you haven't done so already.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP9/16/2014 10:42:00 PM
Description: Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez made his spot start on Tuesday and pitched five innings, allowed two runs on two hits, struck out six and walked four to capture a victory over the Blue Jays, 8-2.
Insight: With a doubleheader last week, the Orioles needed a sixth starter, so manager Buck Showalter called upon Jimenez. The pitcher has had a rough season, but he pitched well on Tuesday. For the year, Jimenez is 5-9 with a 4.90 ERA.
Steve Pearce, RF9/16/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Orioles 1B/OF Steve Pearce hit his 18th home run of the year on Tuesday to help Baltimore clinch its first division title since 1997.
Insight: Pearce has been one of the key role players for Baltimore this season, so it is fitting his play helped them win the final game necessary to capture the team's first AL East title in 17 years. He is hitting .294 with 44 RBI in 320 at-bats along with his 18 homers.
Adam Jones, CF9/16/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones heads into Tuesday's game against Toronto with a tough matchup.
Insight: Baltimore will be going up against Blue Jay's starter Chad Hutchison. Not many Orioles have good numbers against him, and Jones is no different. He has a .167 carrer batting average (3-for-18) against Hutchison, with no extra-base hits. In no way, should owners bench Jones, but it is important to be aware of his less than stellar numbers versus Toronto's hurler.
Wei-Yin Chen, SPHot9/15/2014 1:26:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Wei-Yen Chen has piled up the wins this season, and now has started to become a more complete pitcher, by lowering his ERA and WHIP during the second half of 2014.
Insight: Sitting with a 15-4 overall record and a 3.59 ERA, Chen has been a major reason why Baltimore is in the position they are in. Since the All-Star Break, he has posted a spectacular 6-1 record, 2.67 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. That trend has continued over his past three starts (2-0, 2.29 ERA and 0.92 WHIP). Start him with confidence.
Adam Jones, CF9/13/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones went 2-for-4 against the Yankees on Saturday.
Insight: With Chris Davis and Manny Machado out of the lineup, it is up to Jones to lead the Orioles offense. He had a double and single on Saturday, but did not drive in a run or score. Jones is hitting .285 with 25 home runs and 85 RBI this year.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP9/13/2014 1:37:00 PM
Description: Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez will make a spot start on Tuesday against the Blue Jays according to MASN Sports.
Insight: With the doubleheader on Friday, the Orioles will need a sixth starter this coming week, so manager Buck Showalter called Jimenez's number. Since moving to the bullpen in August, Jimenez has continued to struggle, allowing four runs in his four and 1/3 innings. He is not a very good pickup in fantasy.
Nelson Cruz, LF9/12/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in the 5-0 victory over the Yankees on Friday.
Insight: Cruz snapped his five-game hitting streak in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday, but followed that up with a double in the second game. Cruz is hitting .366 in September so far with four home runs and 12 RBI. He has been a tremendous find in fantasy as he leads baseball this season with 39 home runs.
Bud Norris, SP9/12/2014 10:29:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris threw seven scoreless innings Friday against the Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader. Norris allowed three hits, struck out 10 and walked two.
Insight: Norris is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts. The 29-year-old is 13-8 this year with 3.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 126 strikeouts in 154 innings pitched.
Chris Davis, 1B9/12/2014 12:35:00 PM
Description: The perfect end to a lost season for Baltimore 1B/3B Chris Davis as he was suspended for 25 games after testing positive for amphetamines.
Insight: Davis was hitting .196 but has a respectable 26 home runs, 72 RBI and 65 runs. On the other hand, fantasy owners were hoping for a repeat of last season's 53 homers and 138 RBI.
Nelson Cruz, LF9/12/2014 12:26:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is just a .158 hitter (3-for-19) against Yankees right-hander Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: Cruz is on a modest five game hitting streak which included a teo-homer, seven RBI day last Saturday. Considering the modest expectations at the beginning of the season after the suspension, he production has been outstanding (39 HR, 101 RBI, .860 OPS). This matchup, however, is a tough one for the slugger.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/12/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back spasms) hasn't played since Sept. 5 and is questionable for Friday's doubleheader against the NY Yankees.
Insight: Hardy's MRI showed no structural damage, but isn't likely to be better in time for Friday afternoon's action. Ryan Flaherty owns a modest four-game hitting streak as his replacement, but that's only raised his average to .219 and he has little fantasy value.
Chris Tillman, SPHot9/9/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Chris Tillman continued his strong second half, allowing one run on six hits in five innings in a victory against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Insight: Tillman has not lost a game since July 12. On June 5, his ERA was 5.20. After Tuesday's start, Tillman's ERA dropped to 3.36. In his last 11 starts, he has not allowed more than three earned runs per appearance. He is 12-5 with 133 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP this year.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/9/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back) has missed three straight games and is headed back to Baltimore for more tests.
Insight: Hardy is likely to miss the entire Boston series, but might return by the weekend. Ryan Flaherty continues to fill in at shortstop, but has little to no fantasy value.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/8/2014 4:06:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back) is out of the Orioles lineup for the third straight game.
Insight: Hardy is still considered day-to-day. Ryan Flaherty continues to fill in at shortstop.
Nelson Cruz, LF9/7/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a triple, two runs and an incredible seven RBI as the Orioles defeated the Rays in extra innings, 7-5.
Insight: It cannot be overstated how terrific Cruz has been this season for Baltimore. He has a .262 average, 39 home runs, 101 RBI and a .862 OPS. His 39 home runs is first in the American League and his 101 RBI is second only to Mike Trout's 102 RBI. Cruz is a must-start the rest of the season.
Adam Jones, CF9/7/2014 10:08:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is a career .364 hitter with four home runs and a 1.050 OPS against Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Jones hasn't been as good after the All-Star break as before. He's batting .251 with a .724 OPS in the 47 games since the Summer Classic. Still, he's putting together another solid season - .285, 24 home runs, 81 RBI and 80 runs.
Chris Davis, 1B9/6/2014 9:35:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis was 2-for-4 with his 26th home run of the season in a losing effort against Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Insight: Davis continues to be one of the biggest feast or famine starts in the league. He is hitting .196 but has a respectable 26 home runs, 72 RBI and 63 runs. Nothing will change down the stretch. Expect a lot or very little from the Orioles first baseman.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/6/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back) is not in the Orioles starting lineup for Saturday's game with Tampa Bay.
Insight: Hardy missed a few games this week with lower back spasms. Hardy is hitting .281 with nine home runs and 52 RBI this year. The home run total is about half of what fantasy owners were expecting after he averaged 25.6 HR over the past three seasons.
Steve Pearce, RF9/6/2014 11:11:00 AM
Description: Orioles 1B/OF Steve Pearce (abdomen) has returned to the starting lineup for Saturday's game.
Insight: Pearce had been out since last Saturday with discomfort in his abdomen. Pearce has been a pleasant surprise to fantasy owners, hitting .289/.354/.532 with 16 home runs in 85 games.
Nick Markakis, RF9/6/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Don't be surprised if Orioles right fielder and leadoff hitter Nick Markakis gets Saturday afternoon off.
Insight: Markakis is hitless in 10 at-bats against Tampa Bay left-hander Drew Smyly. The outfielder has been solid, if unspectacular, for Baltimore batting .279 with 12 HR, 44 RBI, 70 runs scored and four steals. This just isn't a good matchup.
Wei-Yin Chen, SPHot9/5/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Wei-Yen Chen pitched six shutout innings against the Rays but received a no-decision on Friday.
Insight: That's because Rays starter Alex Cobb pitched seven shutout innings and the Rays finally broke through with three runs in the eighth. Still, the start is encouraging for Chen, who won his last start but really had not pitched up to his expectations since the middle of August. Chen is having a great season overall, posting a 14-4 record, 3.69 ERA with 119 strikeouts.
Nelson Cruz, LF9/5/2014 11:14:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is just 3-for-14 (all singles) versus Rays right-hander Alex Cobb.
Insight: Cruz has hit .259 with 37 HR and 93 RBI which will likely make him a rich man next season and have fantasy owners playing top dollar for his services. He's just not a good play Friday.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/4/2014 3:32:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back) is in the Orioles starting lineup on Thursday night against the Reds.
Insight: Hardy missed two games this week with lower back spasms. He will be batting sixth and starting at shortstop Thursday. Hardy is hitting .280 with nine home runs and 50 RBI this year.
J.J. Hardy, SS9/2/2014 4:11:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Hardy is dealing with a lower back issue that forced him from Monday's game. The shortstop is hitting .282 with 50 RBI, but he is on pace for his fewest home runs since 2010 ahving hit just nine homers this season.
Nelson Cruz, LF9/1/2014 6:01:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Monday against Minnesota.
Insight: Cruz has hit .238 with seven homers and 13 RBI in his last 21 games after going 11-for-91 (.121) with one home run and four RBI from July 9 to Aug. 8.
Caleb Joseph, C8/31/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph went 4-for-5 with a RBI and run against the Twins on Sunday.
Insight: Joseph has been a decent platoon offensive catcher for Baltimore in place of Matt Wieters this year. He is hitting .240 with eight home runs and 24 RBI in 196 at-bats. In his last five games, he is batting .400 with three RBI.
J.J. Hardy, SS8/31/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy hit a grand slam and scored two runs as Baltimore defeated Minnesota, 12-8.
Insight: Hardy hit the grand slam off Twins reliever Anthony Swarzak in the sixth inning. It was Hardy's ninth this season as he finished the game going 1-for-4. The shortstop is hitting .282 with 50 RBI, but he is on pace for his fewest home runs since 2010.
Nick Markakis, RF8/31/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis went 3-for-5 and scored on Sunday in Baltimore's victory over Minnesota.
Insight: Prior to Sunday's game, Markakis struggled against Twins starter Ricky Nolasco in his career, having just one hit in 14 at-bats against him. Markakis was also hitting a terrible .083 in his last 11 games. Hopefully, the right fielder is out of that terrible slump.
Nick Markakis, RFCold8/31/2014 9:22:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis is just 1-for-14 (.071) is his career against Twins starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Markakis leads the AL in plate appearances as the Orioles leadoff hitter, but he's struggling with the bat hitting just .132 over the past two weeks and should be avoided in the unfavorable matchup.
Alejandro De Aza, OF8/31/2014 8:36:00 AM
Description: Outfielder Alejandro De Aza (.243, 5 HR, 31 RBI, 45 runs, 15 SB) was traded from the White Sox to Baltimore.
Insight: De Aza add more offensive weapons to an already solid Orioles team. He's capable of a 20-20 season, but his numbers have fallen for three straight seasons and perhaps this change of scenery and a pennant race will boost his production.
Chris Davis, 1B8/29/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis went 1-for-3 with a grand slam on Friday. He also scored twice and walked.
Insight: Davis has struggled, to say the least, as he is hitting just .189 in 407 at-bats, but he can still produce massive home runs on occasion. The long ball was his 24th of the season and he has 67 RBI as well.
Miguel Gonzalez, SPHot8/29/2014 10:05:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez pitched seven innings, allowing one run on four hits to earn a victory on Friday against the Twins. Gonzalez also struck out six and walked one.
Insight: Gonzalez has nearly dropped his ERA a whole point since the beginning of July. Over his last eight starts, he is 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA. This season he is 7-7 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
Nelson Cruz, LF8/28/2014 10:44:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz was 2-for-4 with a double, run and steal against the Rays on Thursday.
Insight: Cruz is 4-for-12 (.333) in his last three games, which is nice to see because he is hitting .207 in 87 at-bats during the month of August.
Adam Jones, CF8/28/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones went 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored in the victory over the Rays on Thursday.
Insight: Jones has been slumping lately, hitting .217 in the past week. The nice game on Thursday raises his average back to .288. He also has 24 home runs, 25 doubles, 78 RBI and 75 runs.
J.J. Hardy, SS8/28/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy went 2-for-4 with the go-ahead single in seventh as the Orioles held on to beat the Rays, 5-4.
Insight: Hardy was slumping a bit coming into the game, hitting .211 in the last week. This game should get the shortstop back on track. He is batting .282 with 36 extra-base hits and 45 RBI this season.
Chris Davis, 1B8/28/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis is a career .407 hitter with two home runs versus Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Davis is proving he was a bad bet to repeat last season's fantasy 53-HR, 138-RBI production. He can't get his batting average over .200 and he's hit just 23 long balls this season, so he may not be ready to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Chris Davis, 1B8/27/2014 10:00:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo homer Wednesday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Davis was pretty bad in the first half, batting .199 with 15 homers, 48 RBI and a .700 OPS, and he's been worse since the All-Star break. In 120 at-bats, he has 20 hits (.167), eight homers and 14 RBI.
Caleb Joseph, C8/27/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Baltimore catcher Caleb Joseph went 2-for-4 and had two RBI against the Rays on Tuesday.
Insight: Joseph hit a two-run single in the fourth inning that gave the Orioles the lead for good. The 28-year old rookie is hitting .228 this season with eight home runs and 23 RBI.
Adam Jones, CF8/26/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is a career .211 hitter (4-for-19) without an extra-base hit versus Rays starter Alex Cobb.
Insight: Another solid season from Jones - .288, 24 HR, 78 RBI, .796 OPS. He's been hot this week, batting .391 over the past six games, but this isn't a great matchup.
Chris Tillman, SPHot8/25/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Chris Tillman has won four games and allowed just five runs in August.
Insight: Tillman allowed one unearned run on three hits in seven innings Monday against the Rays. He was 7-5 with a 3.97 ERA entering the month, but after going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP in his last five starts, he's now 11-5 with a 3.41 ERA.
Chris Davis, 1B8/25/2014 10:17:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis has gone 19-for-114 (.167) with seven homers, 13 RBI and 49 strikeouts in 33 games since the All-Star break.
Insight: Davis was four for his last 37 (.108) before going 1-for-3 with a solo homer Monday. He's hitting .190 with 22 homers, 61 RBI, 52 runs and a .683 OPS on the year and at this point fantasy owners need to consider dropping him.
J.J. Hardy, SSHot8/25/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy hit a solo homer Monday against the Rays.
Insight: Hardy admitted last week that he was still dealing with a thumb injury, but he's managed to hit .333 with four doubles, a homer, 12 RBI and 13 runs in August.
Nick Markakis, RFCold8/25/2014 10:12:00 PM

Insight: Markakis hit .415 with four doubles, three homers, five RBI, 12 runs and 10 walks in his first 16 games of August before hitting a 0-for-20 skid. After going 1-for-5 with a homer Monday, he's hititng .285 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI 64 runs and a .750 OPS.
Adam Jones, CFHot8/25/2014 9:39:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is a career .545 hitter (6-for-11) with a home run versus Rays starter Jake Odorizzi.
Insight: Another solid season from Jones - .286, 24 HR, 78 RBI, .794 OPS. He's been hot this week, batting .368 over the past five games and should be ready to jump all over this matchup.
Manny Machado, 3B8/23/2014 3:29:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado said he opted to have season-ending knee surgery because there were no signs his knee was improving according to Rich Dubroff of Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic.
Insight: Machado has plenty of history with knee injuries and he will miss the end of the season for a second straight year. The third baseman sprained a ligament in his right knee on Aug. 11. He underwent surgery on his other knee last October and missed all of April this season.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot8/22/2014 10:44:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz hit his third home run in the last four games Friday at Chicago.
Insight: Cruz leads the big leagues with 34 bombs, besting his previous career high of 33 which he set in 2009. The slugger has gone just 20-for-117 (.171) since the All-Star break, but he's made his hits count with five doubles and six homers in that span.
Manny Machado, 3B8/22/2014 6:52:00 PM
Description: According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is expected to undergo surgery on his knee within a week.
Insight: Machado sprained a ligament in his right knee on Aug. 11. He underwent surgery on his other knee last October and missed all of April this season.
Manny Machado, 3B8/22/2014 2:44:00 PM
Description: Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday there is no timetable for when third baseman Manny Machado will return to baseball action according to MLB.com Orioles reporter Brittany Ghiroli.
Insight: Showalter added he should know more about Machado's return on Saturday, but all signs point to the third baseman being out past August 27, which is his first day he could return from the DL. Machado has been out since August 12 with a sprained right knee.

Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones went 3-for-4 with a solo homer Wednesday against the White Sox.

J.J. Hardy, SSHot8/20/2014 12:41:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy said his thumb injury is "definitely not in the past," according to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.
Insight: Hardy sat out three games with the injury and has gone 7-for-20 with a double and a homer in five games since he returned. He's batting .385 with four doubles, three homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs in August. The shortstop admitted he's "about 50 percent."
Chris Tillman, SPHot8/19/2014 11:21:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Chris Tillman continued his excellent August Tuesday against the White Sox.
Insight: Tillman held Chicago to one run on three hits and struck out nine over eight innings. He's gone 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP over four starts this month.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP8/19/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have decided to move Ubaldo Jimenez to the bullpen, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.

Adam Jones, CF8/19/2014 11:06:00 AM
Description: It is still a small sample size, but Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is hitting .556 with two home runs, three RBI and two walks in 11 plate appearances in his career against Chicago White Sox starter Jose Quintana.
Insight: Jones, however, is slumping in August, hitting just .224 with two home runs. This matchup could be just what the doctor ordered to get Jones in the groove again.
Nelson Cruz, LF8/18/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is a career .455 hitter (5-for-11) versus White Sox ace left-hander Chris Sale.
Insight: Cruz was a major force in the first half, but has struggled since the All-Star break, batting just .167 with three homers in 27 games. We're not sure he's ready to take advantage of the matchup.
Chris Davis, 1B8/17/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis will make another start at third base Sunday, his sixth of the season.
Insight: Davis' average is still below .200 on the year and he has 21 homers and 57 RBI in 366 at-bats, but third base eligibility could be important if he starts hitting down the stretch.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP8/16/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez allowed six runs on five hits and walked three over 4 1/3 innings Saturday at Cleveland.
Insight: Jimenez gave up three runs over six innings in his return from an ankle sprain on Aug. 9, but as usual he can't be counted on for any sort of consistency.

Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy (thumb) is back in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Cleveland and their ace Corey Kluber.

Insight: Hardy's also struck out six times against Peavy on those 22 at-bats. He's been pretty good over the last week (.290 AVG, .700 OPS, though still hitting with a noticeable lack of power), but he's not an advisable play on this particular afternoon.
Nelson Cruz, LF7/5/2014 10:34:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is a career .458 hitter (11-for-24) with three home runs against Boston left-hander Jon Lester in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
Insight: Cruz has hit 26 home runs, one behind Jose Abreu. He's also driven in 68 runs and scored 50.
Nelson Cruz, LF7/4/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is a career .458 hitter (11-for-24) with three home runs against Boston left-hander Jon Lester.
Insight: Cruz is tied with Jose Abreu for first in the majors with 26 home runs. He's also driven in 68 runs and scored 50. Update: Game was postponed due to hurrican Arthur.
Nelson Cruz, LF7/1/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz hit just .215 in June, but he had four home runs in his last 12 games of the month and hit another one Tuesday.
Insight: Cruz is tied with Jose Abreu, who also homered Tuesday, for first in the majors with 26 home runs. He's also driven in 67 runs and scored 49. However, we couldn't expect him to hit .300 all season with a strikeout rate above 20 percent and a line-drive rate below 16.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP 6/30/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez held the Rangers to one unearned run on four hits over eight innings Monday night to improve to 3-8.
Insight: Once every handful of starts, Jimenez (4.31 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) will put together a dominant outing that helps him keep his ERA in check. He's too inconsistent to trust in fantasy leagues, however. The right-hander has recorded a 36/31 K/BB over his last 44 innings.
J.J. Hardy, SS6/30/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy went 2-for-3 with a solo homer Monday against the Rangers.
Insight: Hardy has been one of the top power-hitting shortstops over the past three years, but he didn't hit his first homer this season until June 21. His average fly-ball distance has declined nearly 15 feet in 2014.
Adam Jones, CFHot6/30/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones went 2-for-3 with a solo homer Monday against the Rangers.
Insight: Jones batted .348 with six doubles, nine home runs, 20 RBI and 19 runs in the month of June.
Chris Davis, 1B6/30/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis will serve as the team's third baseman Monday night with Manny Machado suspended for five games.
Insight: It will be his first start at the hot corner since 2011. If you league requires five games or less to be eligible this could be a huge break for Davis owners. Although not up to last year's standards, Davis still has 13 HR and 41 RBI in 66 games. He becomes much more valuable as a 3B.
Manny Machado, 3B6/30/2014 2:03:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado lost his suspension appeal and will begin a five-game hiatus Monday night.
Insight: Machado has been heading in the right direction after getting off to a terrible start following his return from knee surgery. He'll be eligible to play next Saturday in Boston.
Manny Machado, 3B6/29/2014 5:45:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado homered for the third time in his last four games Sunday against the Rays.
Insight: Machado is heading in the right direction after getting off to a terrible start following his return from knee surgery.
Adam Jones, CFCold6/29/2014 10:37:00 AM
Description: O's center fielder Adam Jones and the heart of the Baltimore lineup don't have good numbers against Sunday's starter Alex Cobb.
Insight: The combined batting average from Jones (3-for-16), Chris Davis (2-for-11), Nick Markakis (2-for-10), Nelson Cruz (1-for-9) and Manny Machado (0-for-13) is .136 with zero home runs and two RBI.
Manny Machado, 3B6/29/2014 10:33:00 AM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado hit his sixth homer of the season Saturday against the Rays, but faces a tough assignment on Sunday against Alex Cobb.
Insight: Machado is 0-for-13 against Cobb in his career. Although his season numbers are ugly, Machado is much improved in June (.260, 4 HR, 10 RBI, .755 OPS) and certainly heading in the right direction.
Manny Machado, 3B6/28/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado hit his sixth homer of the season Saturday against the Rays.
Insight: Machado is slowly starting to wake up at the plat hitting .290 with four doubles and two home runs in his last 16 games. However, MLB will announce its decision regarding Machado's five-game suspension soon after hearing his appeal on Wednesday.
Adam Jones, CF6/27/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: O's center fielder Adam Jones blasted four hits in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against Tampa Bay.
Insight: He went 0-for-4 in the opener. Jones (.302, 14 HR, 47 RBI) has had a great month, hitting .343 in 102 June at bats. Don't be surprised if he gets invited to next month's All-Star Game in Minnesota.
Bud Norris, SP6/27/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: As expected, Orioles right-hander Bud Norris has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: He strained his groin about a week ago. Since the move is retroactive to June 22nd, Norris (7-5, 3.62 ERA) will be eligible to return on July 7th.
Kevin Gausman, SPHot6/27/2014 10:59:00 AM
Description: Orioles starter Kevin Gausman has pitched very well over his last three outings and should be a viable option again on Friday in the first game of Baltimore's doubleheader.
Insight: Gausman (3-1, 2.74 ERA) has won his last three starts, yielded a total of two runs over 19 innings with a WHIP of 1.000. He's probably a cheap price and should yield excellent results against a team he beat nine days ago.
Bud Norris, SP6/26/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Baltimore starter Bud Norris is likely headed to the disabled list after Thursday's MRI revealed a strained groin. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: The Orioles are hopeful Norris (7-5, 3.62 ERA) will be back after his 15 days are up. His absence should open up a spot in the rotation for Kevin Gausman (3-1, 2.74 ERA), who has been bouncing between Baltimore and Triple-A Norfolk all season.
Bud Norris, SP6/26/2014 9:49:00 AM
Description: Baltimore right-hander Bud Norris will miss Friday's start because of groin tightness. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Norris (7-5, 3.62 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) will have an MRI on Thursday. The 29-year-old has won his last four starts.
Manny Machado, 3B 6/24/2014 4:21:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will have his appeal of a five-game suspension heard Wednesday, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
Insight: Machado was given a five-game suspension two weeks ago for hurling his bat down the third base line following a brush-back pitch from Oakland's Fernando Abad.
Adam Jones, CFHot6/23/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones took White Sox left-hander Chris Sale deep Monday night.
Insight: In the month of June, Jones has hit eight homers and batted .329 with 18 RBI. He's raised his OPS 79 points in the process.
Chris Davis, 1B6/23/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis hit a pinch-hit walk-off three-run homer off White Sox closer Ronald Belisario Monday night.
Insight: Davis received the night off with tough lefty Chris Sale on the mound for Chicago, but he still managed to have his most productive game since June 17. The first baseman hasn't had a multi-hit game since June 11 and is hitting just .219 with 13 homers, 40 RBI and 34 runs this season.
Chris Davis, 1B6/23/2014 4:31:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis is not in Monday's starting lineup against the White Sox, who will have Chris Sale on the mound.
Insight: Davis has struggled at the plate over the past two weeks, batting just .140 with a .625 OPS, so the team will give him the night off against a very tough left-hander. Steve Pearce will make the start at first with Delmon Young at DH.
Chris Tillman, SP6/22/2014 5:30:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Chris Tillman allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings Sunday against the Yankees.
Insight: Tillman (4.45 ERA, 1.46 WHIP) has struck out just 5.93 batters per nine innings and walked 3.86 this season after posting a 7.81 K/9 and a 2.97 BB/9 last year. He's allowed far fewer home runs per nine innings (1.44 HR/9 in 2013, 0.99 HR/9 in 2014) but his ERA and FIP are both worse than 2013.
J.J. Hardy, SS6/21/2014 8:06:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy finally ended his season-long home run drought Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: His eighth inning solo homer traveled 364 feet. If Hardy can regain his power stroke he'll be unstoppable. The .291 batting average he's collected through 65 games is a career-high.
Bud Norris, SPHot6/21/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: Baltimore right-hander Bud Norris checked out okay and looks to be on track for his next outing Friday against the Rays. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: Norris (7-5, 3.62 ERA) bowed out in the sixth inning Saturday after feeling tightness in his right groin. The 29-year-old hasn't lost a decision since May 28th against Milwaukee.
Kevin Gausman, SP6/21/2014 3:37:00 PM
Description: Despite being sent down to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, the Orioles expect Kevin Gausman to pitch in next week's double-header against the Rays. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: That game will take place next Friday. Teams are allowed to carry an extra player on their roster during double-headers. Gausman (3-1, 2.74 ERA) has pitched well this season and could stay in the rotation if the injury Bud Norris suffered Saturday turns out to be serious.
Bud Norris, SP6/21/2014 3:28:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris left Saturday's start after feeling tightness in his right groin. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: Norris has a decent ERA (3.62 ERA) but his strikeout totals have been a little underwhelming (60 K's in 87 IP). It's unknown if he'll be ready for Friday's start against Tampa Bay.
Kevin Gausman, SPHot6/18/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Kevin Gausman had his third straight quality outing Wednesday at Tampa Bay.
Insight: Gausman allowed five hits and struck out five over six scoreless innings and has gone 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 14 Ks in his last three starts (19 IP). Miguel Gonzalez returned from the disabled list Tuesday and the O's have to decide if they're going to keep a six-man rotation or send Gausman, the fourth-overall pick in the 2012 draft, down.
Chris Davis, 1B6/17/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis pounded his third career grand slam Tuesday in a win against the Rays.
Insight: The ball couldn't have traveled more than 320 feet as it ricocheted off the left field foul pole. But a hit's a hit and the O's have to be happy with Davis' production recently. Though he's only hitting .211 in June, Davis already has five homers and 12 RBI this month.
Miguel Gonzalez, SP6/17/2014 5:34:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez (oblique) has been activated from the disabled list. He'll start Tuesday against the Rays.
Insight: Gonzalez last pitched on May 30. He was on a roll prior to the injury, going 3-3 with a 3.27 ERA in his last 55 innings after giving up seven runs in his first start of the year. The Orioles haven't announced how they'll proceed now that Gonzalez is back. Kevin Gausman is scheduled to start Wednesday and the O's may stick with a six-man rotation if he pitches well.
Matt Wieters, C6/16/2014 8:09:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters is done for the season. SOURCE: Orioles on Twitter
Insight: He needs Tommy John surgery to repair his right elbow. Wieters will finish the 2014 campaign with five homers, 18 RBI and a .308 average in 26 games. Nick Hundley (.226, 1 HR, 7 RBI) will continue to fill in behind the plate.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/15/2014 5:29:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz reached base four times Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: He went 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk. Cruz hasn't homered in his last 12 games but he still leads the league with 21 long balls this season. The 33-year-old is having a career year and will definitely be invited to next month's All-Star Game in Minnesota.
Chris Davis, 1B6/15/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will not start Sunday. He said manager Buck Showalter is giving him a mental break, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Davis is hitting just .220 in June and .228 this season, but he's hit four homers in his last 11 games. Davis, who has a career .332 BABIP, been a victim of some poor batted-ball luck this season. He's hit .284 on balls in play despite carrying a career-high 26.2 percent LD rate and a 22.4 percent HR/FB. With the same BABIP as last season, Davis would be hitting .259 instead of .228.
Chris Davis, 1B6/14/2014 7:26:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis slammed his 11th home run of the season Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Nelson Cruz, LFCold6/12/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz is a lifetime .000 hitter (0-for-14) against Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Cruz dealt with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch about a week ago and hasn't homered since. He hit 21 homers in his first 55 games and zero in the last eight. He isn't likely to break out of the homer-less string on Thursday.
Nick Markakis, RFHot6/12/2014 11:37:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis is a career .429 hitter (18-for-42) with a couple of homers against Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Markakis is rebounding from an off 2013, batting .302 with six homers, 27 RBI, 28 runs scored and a .779 OPS. He's continued his hot hitting into June and should be in lineups on Thursday in this favorable matchup.
Manny Machado, 3BCold6/10/2014 5:27:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is starting Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: He was suspended for five games by MLB for hurling his bat down the third base line following a brush-back pitch from Oakland's Fernando Abad on Sunday. He's appealed the suspension.
Manny Machado, 3BCold6/10/2014 1:37:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has struggled with the bat and his emotions lately and it has to have fantasy owners worried.
Insight: Machado is batting just .229 with four homers, 11 RBI and a .619 OPS. Orioles GM Dan Duquette even addressed the possibility of a "demotion" when talking with Fox reporter Ken Rosenthal. It shows how far Machado has fallen since his big 2013 season.
Bud Norris, SP6/9/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris allowed just three hits and struck out six over eight scoreless innings Monday against Boston.
Insight: Norris allowed 13 earned runs in 17 innings over his previous three starts. He has a very good 1.17 WHIP this season but his ERA is 3.94.
Nick Markakis, RFHot6/9/2014 9:55:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 14 games Monday against Boston.
Insight: Markakis went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. He's hitting .312 with six homers, 26 RBI, 28 runs and an .800 OPS.

Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones homered for the fourth time in his last seven games Monday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Jones has gone 15-for-33 with nine RBI in June and is up to .305 with 10 home runs, 39 RBI, 36 runs and an .804 OPS. He entered the month hitting .283 with six homers and a .730 OPS.
Matt Wieters, C6/9/2014 4:34:00 PM
Description: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is not doing well in his throwing program.
Insight: If Wieters, who was diagnosed with a strained elbow, can't turn it around, surgery is possible. Wieters (.308, 5 HR, 18 RBI) was hitting like an All-Star before he was sidelined and this would be a huge blow to the Orioles and fantasy owners. Update: Wieters has an appointment with Dr. James Andrews.
Matt Wieters, C6/9/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is not doing well in his throwing program.

J.J. Hardy, SS6/9/2014 10:31:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is just a lifetime .105 hitter (2-for-19) against Red Sox starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Hardy has hit for average this season (.296 in 203 at bats), but his power has gone missing (no homers, .365 SLUG). In today's matchup he isn't likely to help his average or his power numbers.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/9/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz is a career .364 hitter (4-for-11) with a home run against Boston veteran right-hander Jake Peavy.
Insight: Cruz exited last Sunday's game with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch. He only missed one game, but hasn't homered since. He's got a favorable matchup, but just one extra-base hits in his last 20 at-bats is concerning.
Heath Bell, RP6/8/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Heath Bell has opted out of his minor league deal with Baltimore. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: Bell went 2-0 with one save and a 4.22 ERA in ten appearances for Triple-A Norfolk. He's played for four different organizations since leaving the Padres after the 2011 season.
Manny Machado, 3B6/8/2014 4:49:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was ejected from Sunday's game for throwing his bat.
Insight: Machado (.235, 4 HR, 11 RBI) caused benches to clear Friday when he objected to a hard tag made by Josh Donaldson. After hitting Derek Norris with a backswing earlier in the game on Sunday, Machado took exception to Fernando Abad throwing two balls inside and flung his bat down the third base line, causing benches to clear again. Abad (1-2, 1.78 ERA) was also ejected.
Nick Markakis, RF6/8/2014 10:34:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis is hitting .324 against left-handed pitchers this season and .417 in his career against Oakland lefty Scott Kazmir.
Insight: Markakis is a career .293 hitter, but he's never had an average better than .306 in any season. He's at .308 with five homers, 24 RBI, 27 runs and a .785 OPS this year.
Kevin Gausman, SP6/7/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Kevin Gausman threw what was his longest and easily his best career start Saturday against the Athletics.
Insight: Gausman held the high-powered A's to one run on four hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking one. The 2012 fourth-overall pick had a 6.10 ERA in 51 2/3 MLB innings prior to Saturday. Miguel Gonzalez could come off the disabled list to make his next start, so Gausman may be headed back to the minors.
Adam Jones, CFHot6/7/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones has hit three homers and driven in nine runs in the first six games of June.
Insight: Jones entered the month hitting .283 with six home runs, 29 RBI, 30 runs and a .730 OPS in 54 games. After the last six games, he's suddenly hitting .300 with nine homers, 38 RBI, 35 runs and a .785 OPS this season.
J.J. Hardy, SS6/6/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy had a three-hit night Friday against Oakland.
Insight: Hardy has hit for average this season (.305 in 197 at bats) but his power has gone missing (no homers, .376 SLUG). Usually, it's the other way around. Even without power, Hardy is still one of the more trusted names in fantasy and should be owned in all formats.
Johan Santana, SP6/6/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: Baltimore left-hander Johan Santana has a torn Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2014 season. SOURCE: Fox Sports
Insight: Santana was mere weeks away from making his Orioles debut. Now there's a strong possibility the 35-year-old will never throw another pitch in the major leagues. If injuries hadn't derailed his career there's little doubt Santana would have been a Hall of Famer.
Miguel Gonzalez, SP6/6/2014 12:04:00 PM
Description: The results of Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez's MRI were better than the club expected, but a DL stint could still be a possibility. Source: Eduardo A. Encina.
Insight: The Orioles don't believe that Gonzalez's (4.17 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 50 K) side injury is an oblique strain, but his status for Saturday's game against Oakland is still up in the air. Baltimore will decide today whether or not he can go or whether he'll be placed on the DL. Regardless, it might be a smart idea to grab Kevin Gausman if he's available.
Tommy Hunter, SP6/6/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: Orioles relief pitcher Tommy Hunter will pitch for Class A Delmarva on Saturday and is expected to be activated by Baltimore in ahead of Sunday's game. Source: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com.
Insight: Hunter has been out since May 20 with a groin strain, but it will be interesting to see into what role the Orioles will slide their former closer. Zach Britton has been nearly unhittable since taking over the closers' role on May 15 while the right-handed Hunter allowed eight runs in six appearences before landing on the DL.
Kevin Gausman, SP6/4/2014 9:00:00 PM
Description: Kevin Gausman will likely start for the Orioles Saturday against the Athletics. He was pulled from his start for Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday in the first inning, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Miguel Gonzalez was scratched from his start Thursday due to pain in his side and the O's moved Chris Tillman up to take his place, leaving a vacancy on Saturday. Gausman, the fourth-overall pick in 2012, has recorded a 2.40 ERA and 42 Ks in 41 1/3 innings for Norfolk this season, but he has a 6.10 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 51 2/3 innings in the majors the past two seasons. Avoid him if he starts Saturday.
Miguel Gonzalez, SP 6/4/2014 5:54:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez is dealing with pain in his side and will have an MRI, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.

Adam Jones, CF6/4/2014 9:13:00 AM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones delivered four hits in Tuesday's win over Texas.
Insight: Jones just keeps plugging along. The 28-year-old has hit .314 with six homers and 18 RBI since May 1st. Look for him to keep things going Wednesday at Globe Life Park, where Jones is a .312 lifetime hitter.
Johan Santana, SP6/3/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: According to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com, the Orioles plan to have Johan Santana join the rotation on June 19.
Insight: Santana was one of the best pitchers in baseball from 2004-08, but he's been plagued by injuries since 2009 and hasn't pitched since 2012 due to a torn capsule in his shoulder. He's worth stashing in AL-only leagues, but everyone else can take a wait-and-see approach.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/3/2014 4:59:00 PM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz (hand) is in the lineup Tuesday at Texas, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Cruz exited Sunday's game with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch. The 33-year-old is having his best season, hitting .314 with 20 HR and 52 RBI in 54 games. He'll make his return to Arlington, where he played eight years, Tuesday night.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/3/2014 11:10:00 AM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz is expected to be in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Texas.
Insight: Cruz bruised his hand Sunday but didn't have a problem on Monday. The 33-year-old is having his best season, hitting .314 with 20 HR and 52 RBI in 54 games and will make his return to Arlington where he played for eight seasons.
Johan Santana, SP6/2/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: Baltimore added Johan Santana to its major league roster Monday and immediately placed him on the disabled list.
Insight: He could join Baltimore's rotation later this month. Santana can't throw as hard as he used to so he'll have to rely on his control when he returns to the big leagues.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/2/2014 7:39:00 PM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz is probable for Tuesday's game against Texas. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Cruz bruised his hand Sunday but it doesn't look like he'll miss any time. The 33-year-old is having his best season, hitting .314 with 20 HR and 52 RBI in 54 games.
Manny Machado, 3B6/1/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado launched his first career grand slam Sunday against Houston.
Insight: Machado (.230, 3 HR, 9 RBI) was hitless in his first eight at bats of the series but finished by going four for his last seven. The Orioles experimented by batting him seventh a few days ago but Machado seems to be more comfortable in the No. 2 spot between Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz.
Nelson Cruz, LF6/1/2014 6:19:00 PM
Description: O's left fielder Nelson Cruz is day-to-day with a bruised left hand. SOURCE: Evan Drellich, Houston Chronicle
Insight: Thankfully for fantasy owners, his X-rays came back negative. Cruz leads the majors in both home runs (20) and RBI (52). Baltimore doesn't play again until Tuesday so Cruz might not miss any time.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot6/1/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz left Sunday's game after getting drilled in the left hand by a pitch from Houston's Scott Feldman.
Insight: It was an 87 mph fastball, but that's still fast enough to cause a fracture. He's going for X-rays. Cruz has carried fantasy owners with a .314 average, 20 homers, 52 RBI and a 1.055 OPS this season.
Nick Markakis, RF6/1/2014 12:42:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis will return to the lineup Sunday, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Markakis sat out yesterday due to a stiff neck and is serving as the DH Sunday. He's hitting an even .300 with three homers, 18 RBI, 22 runs and a .750 OPS this year.
Adam Jones, CF6/1/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones hasn't provided the production fantasy owners expected from him this season and he's never been able to solve Scott Feldman of the Astros.
Insight: Perhaps he should have tried to learn a few things last year when Feldman pitched for Baltimore for a few months. Jones has gone 2-for-18 (.111) against the Astros right-hander.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot6/1/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz hit his MLB-leading 20th homer Saturday at Milwaukee.
Insight: Not only does he have 20 homers, he's hitting .315 with 52 RBI, 39 runs and a 1.058 OPS. He blasted 13 homers in the month of May.
Tommy Hunter, SP5/31/2014 2:52:00 PM
Description: Orioles closer Tommy Hunter will throw a bullpen session on Sunday.
Insight: Hunter 6.06 ERA and astronomical 1.84 WHIP might not be good enough to get his closer's job back. Chad Qualls save the first two games of the current series with Houston and has a 2.55 ERA and 1.189 WHIP.
Matt Wieters, C5/31/2014 1:29:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 11, has begun throwing.

Chris Davis, 1B5/27/2014 4:44:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has been activated from the paternity list.
Insight: Davis left the team on Sunday morning to be with his wife for the birth of their daughter. He has batted .314 with five home runs, 12 RBI, nine walks and a 1.278 OPS in his last 10 games.
Johan Santana, SP5/27/2014 2:23:00 PM
Description: Orioles left-hander Johan Santana threw 4 1/3 imnnings in an extended spring training game and should be ready for a minor league rehab start shortly.
Insight: Santana has lost a lot of his velocity, throwing around 86-88 mph, but he knows how to pitch. Although he hopes to be ready to pitch with the big club in June, fantasy owners should take a wait and see attitude.
Nick Markakis, RF5/27/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis is just 4-for-34 (.118) against Brewers starter Matt Garza.
Insight: Markakis has improved on last season's numbers, but he's still not producing as he did from 2007-2009 when he was an everday fantasy outfielder. Tuesday's matchup should be avoided.
Adam Jones, CF5/27/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is a career .381 hitter with a pair of homers and a 1.123 OPS versus Milwaukee right-hander Matt Garza.
Insight: Jones is batting for a higher average, but with less power than last season which likely doesn't make fantasy owners happy, but he's still a top outfielder who can explode at any time.
Chris Davis, 1BHot5/26/2014 3:06:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will return from paternity leave on Tuesday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.
Insight: Davis left the team on Sunday morning to be with his wife for the birth of their daughter. He has batted .314 with five home runs, 12 RBI, nine walks and a 1.278 OPS in his last 10 games.
Zach Britton, SP5/25/2014 9:52:00 PM
Description: Orioles left-hander Zach Britton picked up his second save of the season with a spotless ninth inning Sunday against Cleveland.
Insight: Britton has a 0.68 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings this season and appears to be the O's new closer. Darren O'Day may grab a save here or there but Britton is the guy to add.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot5/25/2014 8:31:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is alone on top of the MLB HR leaderboard.
Insight: Cruz homered for the fourth time in his last six games Sunday against Cleveland and now has 16 on the year to go with 44 RBI. He's hitting .295 with a .973 OPS and has been an absolute bargain for the Orioles at $8 million for one year.
Chris Davis, 1B5/25/2014 1:11:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have placed first baseman Chris Davis on the paternity list. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun

Nick Hundley, C5/24/2014 4:33:00 PM
Description: The Padres have traded catcher Nick Hundley to Baltimore for left-hander Troy Patton.
Insight: The Orioles could use an extra catcher with Matt Wieters sidelined by an elbow injury. Hundley (.271, 1 HR, 3 RBI) might catch a few games here and there but he's not likely to see enough at bats to warrant fantasy ownership.
Chris Davis, 1BHot5/24/2014 11:30:00 AM
Description: O's first baseman Chris Davis has begun to look like the player we drafted since returning from the disabled list.
Insight: Davis is batting .295 with five homers, 12 RBI and a 1.130 OPS in his last 12 games. After a slow start, his fantasy owners are finally smiling.
Manny Machado, 3B5/24/2014 11:26:00 AM
Description: Orioles 3B Manny Machado (groin) will sit out Saturday's game against Cleveland.
Insight: He tweaked his groin during Thursday's extra inning loss and missed Friday's game too. Utility man Ryan Flaherty (.211, 1 HR, 9 RBI) is filling in at the hot corner, but holds little interest for fantasy owners. JJ Hardy moves into the No. 2 hole.
Chris Davis, 1BHot5/23/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: O's first baseman Chris Davis delivered four RBI Friday in a victory over the Indians.
Insight: He clubbed his seventh homer of the season during the fifth inning. Davis (.267, 7 HR, 25 RBI) now has ten RBI in his last four contests.
Nick Markakis, RFHot5/23/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis had a huge night Friday against Cleveland.
Insight: Markakis led the way with four hits in five at bats. He's brought his batting average all the way up to .306 after starting the week at only .287. The 30-year-old has hit .312 this month with eight RBI.
Chris Tillman, SP5/23/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Despite tweaking his groin Wednesday in a loss to Pittsburgh, Orioles manager Buck Showalter fully expects Chris Tillman to make his scheduled start Monday against the Brewers. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Until his last outing, Tillman had been pretty good this season, compiling a 3.34 ERA over his first nine starts. Tillman himself downplayed the injury, attributing Wednesday's meltdown to poor command. Check back before Monday just to make sure Tillman doesn't need his next start pushed back.
Manny Machado, 3B5/23/2014 6:04:00 PM
Description: Orioles 3B Manny Machado will sit out Friday's game against Cleveland. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: He tweaked his groin during Thursday's extra inning loss. Utility man Ryan Flaherty (.207, 1 HR, 9 RBI) is filling in at the hot corner.
Manny Machado, 3B5/23/2014 9:42:00 AM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado left Thursday night's game due to a stiff right groin.
Insight: The team said it was just a precaution, but beware he could miss some time. He's hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.
Darren O'Day, RPHot5/22/2014 3:38:00 PM
Description: Orioles Darren O'Day, he of the stunning 0.52 ERA and 0.981 WHIP, could be next in line for the closer's role in Baltimore.
Insight: O'Day figures to get a tryout with Tommy Hunter headed to the disabled list. Fantasy owners should pick him up immediately.
Tommy Hunter, SP5/22/2014 3:33:00 PM
Description: Orioles closer Tommy Hunter has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin.
Insight: This helps explain his 6.06 ERA and astronomical 1.84 WHIP. Darren O'Day (0.52 ERA, 0.981 WHIP) figures to take over the ninth inning role for the time being.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot5/21/2014 10:44:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz hit his 14th homer of the season and went 3-for-5 with three RBI Wednesday at Pittsburgh.

Chris Tillman, SP5/21/2014 10:04:00 PM
Description: After throwing nine innings his last time out, Baltimore starter Chris Tillman didn't even last two innings Wednesday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Tillman allowed four runs in the first inning, the O's got him six runs in the top of the second and Tillman gave up four more runs in the bottom of the inning without getting an out. His final line: 1 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K. His ERA increased from 3.34 to 4.21.
Chris Davis, 1B5/20/2014 10:03:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis belted three home runs, drove in five runs and scored four as part of a 4-for-5 game Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Davis came into the game with just three homers and 15 RBI all season, but we know he's capable of going off at any time. This could be the game that sparks him.
J.J. Hardy, SS5/18/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy provided three hits Sunday in a loss to Kansas City.
Insight: Hardy (.271, 0 HR, 9 RBI) was held without a hit the night before so this was a welcome improvement. With the loss, the Orioles are now a full game behind New York for first in the AL East.
Nick Markakis, RF 5/18/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Baltimore right fielder Nick Markakis should be comfortable facing Royals starter James Shields on Sunday.
Insight: Markakis has 68 career at-bats against Shields and produced a .294 average, five doubles and two homers while walking 10 times versus the former Rays right-hander.
Bud Norris, SP5/17/2014 9:53:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris was the tough-luck loser Saturday at Kansas City.
Insight: Royals starter Danny Duffy was perfect through 6 2/3 and the O's were shut out, so Norris lost despite allowing one earned run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old has a 3.58 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP this season, but he's fanned just 33 batters in 50 1/3 innings. Norris had a K/9 of 8.5 from 2010-13, though it came with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
Dylan Bundy, SP5/17/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Orioles pitching prospect Dylan Bundy (elbow) will throw one inning in an extended spring training game next week, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
Insight: It will be the first time Bundy faces hitters from outside of the Baltimore organization since his Tommy John surgery. Bundy is making progress and could join the O's rotation around the All-Star break. Prior to the injury, Bundy was considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.
Jonathan Schoop, 2B5/17/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop is probable for Saturday's game against Kansas City while dealing with a torn nail on right index finger.
Insight: The Baltimore rookie has hit .224 this season with three homers, 14 RBI and a .630 OPS. Fantasy owners can find better even when he is healthy.
Chris Davis, 1B 5/16/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis hit his third homer of the season Friday at Kansas City.
Insight: Davis went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs. He's hitting just .247 with three homers and 15 RBI, not what fantasy owners expected after he batted .286 with 53 homers and 138 RBI last year.
Chris Tillman, SP5/16/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: When Orioles starter Chris Tillman, who struggles with homers, met the Royals, who are last in the majors with 18 home runs, Friday night, Tillman's first career shutout happened.
Insight: Tillman allowed five hits, struck out three and walked one in the 4-0 win. He has a 3.34 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP to go with a 43/20 K/BB in 56 2/3 innings this season.
Chris Davis, 1BCold5/16/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis is just 1-for-16 with six strikeouts against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Davisis just 3-for-16 since his return from the disabled list. Fantasy owners are hoping he'll soon improve on a slow start (.234, 2 HR, 14 RBI). It won't likely happen today.
Kevin Gausman, SP5/15/2014 7:16:00 PM
Description: Baltimore right-hander Kevin Gausman was sent down to Triple-A Norfolk following a disappointing outing Wednesday against Detroit.
Insight: If Gausman (4 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's) had pitched well, the Orioles probably would have considered moving him into the rotation full-time. Instead, Miguel Gonzalez (1-3, 4.76 ERA) will continue to pitch every fifth day. Gausman should get another chance at the big league level later this season.
Kevin Gausman, SP5/14/2014 6:49:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Kevin Gausman allowed five earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Gausman consistently throws 95-96 mph but his ERA is 6.10 in 51 2/3 career big league innings.
Nelson Cruz, LF5/14/2014 5:11:00 PM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Tigers starter Justin Verlander threw behind Cruz in the previous inning, likely in retaliation for Bud Norris beaning Torii Hunter two days ago. Cruz got the better of Verlander in the fifth inning with his 11th homer of the season.
Bud Norris, SP5/14/2014 3:49:00 PM
Description: According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, Orioles right-hander Bud Norris will not be suspended for throwing at Torii Hunter on Monday night.
Insight: Norris was tossed from the game but it didn't appear to be intentional. Justin Verlander got his two cents in by throwing one behind Nelson Cruz in Wednesday's matinee. Both sides were warned but Verlander was allowed to stay in the game. Norris (2-3, 3.98 ERA) will make his next start Saturday against Kansas City.
Nelson Cruz, LFCold5/14/2014 11:03:00 AM
Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz has struggled mightily against Detroit starter Justin Verlander.
Insight: Cruz owns a .136 average against Verlander in 22 trips to the plate. The 33-year-old has hit a bit of a rough patch recently, striking out 14 times in his last 35 at bats.
Adam Jones, CF5/14/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones hasn't had much luck against Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Jones (.270, 5 HR, 21 RBI) has managed just four hits against him in 30 lifetime at bats (.133 AVG). Nine of those 30 at bats have resulted in strikeouts.
Adam Jones, CF 5/13/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones has a modest eight-game hitting streak going, and he's homered four times during it.
Insight: Jones has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and is up to .270 with five homers and 21 RBI this season.
Tommy Hunter, SPCold5/13/2014 10:01:00 PM
Description: Orioles closer Tommy Hunter blew a 1-0 lead Tuesday against the Tigers.
Insight: It was his second straight blown save. Hunter was one out away from closing out the win, but he allowed a three-run homer to Miguel Cabrera and a solo shot to Victor Martinez in succession. The 27-year-old has given up eight earned runs on 10 hits in his last 3 1/3 innings and now has a 6.60 ERA. Darren O'Day (0.60 ERA) is probably next in line for saves, though manager Buck Showalter may also consider Zach Britton (0.84 ERA) should he remove Hunter.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot5/13/2014 9:59:00 PM
Description: Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez has allowed just 13 hits and one earned run while posting a 20/5 K/BB in his last 19 2/3 innings.
Insight: Jimenez ended April with a 6.59 ERA but he dropped to 4.02 after holding Detroit to three hits over seven scoreless innings Tuesday night. The right-hander is extremely erratic and difficult to trust in fantasy leagues, but we saw in the second half last year that he's still capable of dominating for long stretches.
Kevin Gausman, SP5/13/2014 6:49:00 PM
Description: Kevin Gausman will get the ball Wednesday when the Orioles host Detroit. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Gausman is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Norfolk this season. The 23-year-old was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft following a successful college career at LSU. He was only average in his first taste of the big leagues last season (3-5, 5.66 ERA in 20 appearances).
Bud Norris, SP5/12/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Bud Norris was ejected in the eighth inning Monday after hitting Detroit outfielder Torii Hunter with a pitch. SOURCE: Chris Iott, MLive
Insight: Hunter probably should have been the one ejected as he escalated things by walking toward Norris and then shouting into the Orioles' dugout. Norris (7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 7 K's, 2 BB) could get fined but we doubt this will result in a suspension.
Adam Jones, CFCold5/12/2014 11:46:00 AM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones is just a .143 hitter (3-for-21) against Detroit starter Rick Porcello.
Insight: The hits are all singles with six strikeouts. Jones, on a six-game hitting streak is still hitting only .264 for the season after batting .285 with 33 HR during the 2013 campaign.

Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis (strained oblique) is a career .333 hitter with three homers and a 1.267 OPS versus Detroit starter Rick Porcello.

Nick Markakis, RFHot5/11/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Baltimore right fielder Nick Markakis singled Sunday to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

Matt Wieters, C5/11/2014 12:18:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Wieters, who was diagnosed with a strained elbow, is hoping to be back in about 2-to-3 weeks. If Wieters (.308, 5 HR, 18 RBI) doesn't see significant improvement during that timeframe, he could require surgery.
Chris Davis, 1B5/11/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis (strained oblique) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is in Sunday's starting lineup.
Insight: Davis is hoping to improve on his slow start (.250, 2 HR, 13 RBI).
Manny Machado, 3BCold5/9/2014 9:48:00 PM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado hit his first home run of the season Friday against Houston.
Insight: It was also his first extra-base hits of the year. Machado is 5-for-31 (.161) since he returned from knee surgery, though he's struck out just two times and walked three.
Wei-Yin Chen, SP5/9/2014 9:46:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Wei-Yen Chen has allowed 10 earned runs in his last 30 1/3 innings after giving up eight in his first 10 2/3.
Insight: Chen's ERA dropped to 3.95 after he allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings Friday against Houston. He's allowed 50 hits in 41 innings this season, but a .351 BABIP is the main reason for that.
Adam Jones, CF5/9/2014 11:31:00 AM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones has struggled mightily in his career against Astros starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: He's just 1-for-15 against him with four strikeouts. Jones is coming off a 5-for-12 series against the Rays but is still hitting only .267 for the season. Jones hit .285 with 33 HR during the 2013 campaign.
Chris Davis, 1B5/9/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis is hoping to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday. SOURCE: Baltimore Sun
Insight: Davis (strained oblique) is eligible to come off the DL on Monday and that's still a definite possibility. Steve Pearce (.270, 2 HR, 5 RBI) has been getting most of the reps at first base in his absence.
Matt Wieters, C5/8/2014 6:58:00 PM
Description: Matt Wieters will serve as the Orioles' DH Thursday versus the Rays. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Wieters missed last night's game with an elbow injury. He'll serve as the DH until further notice with Steve Clevenger (.226, 0 HR, 4 RBI) filling in behind the plate.
Nick Markakis, RFHot5/8/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis has hit safely in 14 straight games, but he may have a hard time extending his streak Thursday against David Price of the Rays.

Adam Jones, CF5/7/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones cracked two home runs Wednesday in a win over Tampa Bay.
Insight: Prior to Wednesday, Jones had just one home run in 123 at bats this season. Both homers were solo shots off left-hander Cesar Ramos.
Matt Wieters, C5/7/2014 4:20:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (elbow) is not in the lineup Wednesday, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Wieters visited Dr. James Andrews to have his sore elbow checked out on Wednesday and Andrews determined that Wieters is not a candidate for Tommy John surgery. He's expected to serve as the DH when he returns to the lineup to rest the elbow.
Matt Wieters, C5/7/2014 1:55:00 PM
Description: A source tells Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun that Orioles catcher Matt Wieters is not a candidate for Tommy John surgery.
Insight: Wieters visited Dr. James Andrews to have his sore elbow checked out on Wednesday. He's expected to continue serving as the DH in order to rest the elbow, which is great news for fantasy owners who have enjoyed his hot start.
J.J. Hardy, SS5/7/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: In nine career at-bats against Tampa Bay's Cesar Ramos, Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy has picked up five hits.
Insight: Hardy has homered twice and double off of Ramos, Wednesday's scheduled starter. The 31-year-old averaged 26 homers per season from 2011-13 but is still looking for his first blast of 2014.
Matt Wieters, C5/6/2014 10:47:00 PM
Description: According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, Orioles minor league catcher Caleb Joseph will be recalled to take Matt Wieters' place on the 25-man roster.
Insight: Passan reported earlier today that Wieters will visit Dr. James Andrews to have his sore elbow checked out and that he may have a torn UCL. Even if he doesn't need Tommy John surgery, it looks like the O's will place the catcher on the DL.
Matt Wieters, C5/6/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters will have his sore elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
Insight: Wieters has sat out frequently since late April due to forearm soreness and he may have a torn UCL, which would require Tommy John surgery. He's having a strong year offensively, hitting .337 with five home runs, 18 RBI and a .942 OPS, so a serious injury would be unfortunate.
Miguel Gonzalez, SPCold5/4/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Baltimore righthander Miguel Gonzalez couldn't make it out of the fifth inning Sunday at Minnesota.
Insight: Gonzalez gave up six hits, walked four and allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander had a 3.58 ERA over the previous two seasons but his 4.42 FIP suggested he should have been much worse. This year, his ERA is 5.28 and his FIP is 4.90.
Nelson Cruz, LF5/4/2014 1:36:00 PM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz won't be of much use to fantasy owners Sunday against Phil Hughes.
Insight: That's because he's just a .167 career hitter against him. Cruz is having a good season so far (.295, 8 HR, 27 RBI) but this isn't a good matchup for him.
Manny Machado, 3BCold5/4/2014 1:34:00 PM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado is 5-for-10 in his career against Twins starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: All ten of those at bats came when Hughes was playing for the Yankees. Machado has just one hit in his first 13 at bats this season but we're still confident he'll be able to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Johan Santana, SP5/4/2014 1:05:00 PM
Description: Orioles left-hander Johan Santana is hoping to be back in the majors by June 1st. SOURCE: Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio
Insight: Santana will make his first extended spring training start on Monday. He's lost a lot of his velocity but that's not necessarily a deal breaker for Santana, who was one of the craftiest pitchers in the big leagues during his heydey. Soon we'll find out how much the 35-year-old has left in the tank.
Matt Wieters, CHot5/3/2014 1:02:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters won't suit up Saturday against Minnesota. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Wieters will sit out for the seventh time this season. He leads all major league catchers in batting average (.354) and is second in RBI (18).
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP5/3/2014 10:03:00 AM
Description: Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez finally entered the win column Friday against Minnesota.
Insight: Jimenez (1-4, 5.19 ERA) fanned ten hitters over 7 1/3 scoreless frames. It was easily the right-hander's best outing of the season. Jimenez will be on the hill again Thursday versus Tampa Bay.
Nick Markakis, RF5/2/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: O's right fielder Nick Markakis is hitless in 10 at-bats against right-hander Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: He's hitting .306 with two homers and 10 RBI and a .783 OPS, but he hasn't been a must start in five years and is a must-sit option on Friday.
Steve Lombardozzi, 2B5/1/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: Steve Lombardozzi is headed to Triple-A Norfolk.
Insight: Manny Machado has taken Lombardozzi's spot on the active roster. He should have another chance to contribute in the big leagues later this season.
Matt Wieters, C5/1/2014 2:40:00 PM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Wieters will obviously catch the nightcap. He's playing as well as any catcher in the league, batting .338 with four homers, 15 RBI and a .924 OPS.
Manny Machado, 3B5/1/2014 2:30:00 PM
Description: As expected, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado (knee) has been activated from the 15-day DL. However, he is not in the lineup for Game 1 of today's day/night doubleheader.
Insight: We expect him to play in the nightcap. The 21-year-old Machado suffered a torn medial patellar ligament in his left knee last September and had surgery on Oct. 14.
Manny Machado, 3B4/29/2014 9:43:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado (knee) should be back in the lineup Wednesday.
Insight: He was expected back Tuesday but Baltimore's game was rained out. The 21-year-old Machado suffered a torn medial patellar ligament in his left knee last September and had surgery on Oct. 14.
Manny Machado, 3B4/29/2014 1:33:00 PM
Description: After going 8-for12 in three minor league rehab starts, Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) could be activated Tuesday night (weather permitting), according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: The 21-year-old suffered a torn medial patellar ligament in his left knee last September and had surgery on Oct. 14. He's a career .279 hitter who led the league in doubles last season and is a great glove man around the hot corner.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot4/27/2014 6:07:00 PM
Description: Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz blasted a two-run homer off Royals starter James Shields in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon.
Insight: It was the only damage Baltimore inflicted on Shields. Cruz is hitting .280 with seven longballs and 25 RBI in 88 at-bats.
Matt Wieters, C4/27/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters won't be in action Sunday against the Royals. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Wieters caught last night's extra inning game so he could probably use a day to rest up. He's gotten off to a great start with four homers and a .338 batting average in his first 19 appearances. Steve Clevenger (.294, 0 HR, 4 RBI) is starting behind the plate on Sunday.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/27/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy has traditionally struggled against Royals ace James Shields.
Insight: He's hitting .167 against the right-hander in 12 at bats. Hardy is still looking for his first home run of the season. None of Hardy's 158 career home runs have come against Shields (2-2, 1.91 ERA).
Chris Davis, 1B4/26/2014 10:41:00 PM
Description: O's first baseman Chris Davis is headed to the disabled list. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: We figured that would be the case when Davis (.250, 2 HR, 13 RBI) went down with an oblique strain on Friday night. Nick Markakis moved to first base for Saturday's game and could see extended time there during Davis' absence.
Chris Davis, 1B4/26/2014 9:09:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis is hoping to avoid the disabled list after straining his oblique on Friday night. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Davis (.250, 2 HR, 13 RBI) said he's already feeling a lot better though we're not expecting to see him Sunday in the series finale. Nick Markakis (.295, 0 HR, 7 RBI) got the start at first Saturday against Kansas City.
Chris Davis, 1B4/26/2014 1:18:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who left Friday's game with a left oblique strain, is doubtful for Saturday's game against Kansas City
Insight: Oblique strains usually require a trip to the disabled list and can linger, so this is particularly bad news for a power hitter like Davis. Even if healthy enough to play on Saturday, its a bad matchup as he's just 1-for-16 against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPCold4/25/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez walked four more batters and allowed four runs on six hits in six innings Friday against Kansas City.
Insight: We were wary of the inconsistent Jimenez this season after left his comfort zone in Cleveland to sign with Baltimore, and he has been highly ineffective so far. He has a 6.59 ERA, a 1.83 WHIP and a 21/17 K/BB in 27 1/3 innings.
Adam Jones, CF4/24/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: After going 2-for-5 with three RBI Thursday against the Blue Jays, O's center fielder Adam Jones is hitting .291 this season, but he has just one home run.
Insight: Jones increased his home run total in each of the last three seasons and had a career-high 33 last year. There's nothing wrong with his fly-ball rate; it's actually higher than last season at 36.9 percent, but his HR/FB is only 4.2 percent.
Chris Davis, 1B4/24/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis went 2-for-5 with three RBI Thursday at Toronto.
Insight: Davis hit his second home run of the season Wednesday night and has gone 4-for-10 over his last two games.
Manny Machado, 3B4/24/2014 7:52:00 PM
Description: The Orioles are eyeing next weekend for Manny Machado's return from knee surgery. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun

Matt Wieters, CHot4/23/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters (forearm) returned to the lineup Wednesday and went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.
Insight: He missed yesterday's game with a sore forearm. Wieters is off to a fantastic start with the stick, hitting .344 with four home runs, 13 RBI and a .973 OPS. The backstop hit .249 and averaged 22 home runs and 77 RBI per season from 2011-13.
Chris Davis, 1B4/23/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis hit his second home run of the season Wednesday at Toronto.
Insight: Davis (.246, .771 OPS) didn't have one in his first 11 games of the season and went seven games without one between his first and second. However, if there's one thing we aren't worried about with Davis, it's his power hitting.
Nelson Cruz, LFHot4/23/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz launched a pair of home runs and drove in five Wednesday at Toronto.
Insight: Cruz has had a great month, going 22-for-73 (.301) with six homers, 21 RBI, 14 runs and a 14/10 K/BB. He hasn't gone more than one game without a hit.
Chris Tillman, SP 4/23/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Chris Tillman won his third game of the season Wednesday at Toronto despite allowing seven earned runs on nine hits (three homers) in 5 2/3 innings.
Insight: Tillman's longball issues returned Wednesday after he gave up just two homers in his first 26 1/3 this season. He allowed 33 blasts in 206 1/3 innings last season, but 23 were solo shots and none came with more than one man on base so he escaped with a 3.71 ERA. He'll take a 3.38 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP into his next start.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/23/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: O's shortstop J.J. Hardy is back in the lineup Wednesday against Toronto. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com

Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is back behind the plate Wednesday against Toronto. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: He missed yesterday's game with a sore forearm. Wieters' .321 average this season is tied for seventh-best in the American League.
Delmon Young, LF4/23/2014 1:20:00 PM
Description: Baltimore DH Delmon Young has been awful in his career against Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan (2-for-15 with four strikeouts).
Insight: Obviously that doesn't bode well for Wednesday. Given the matchup, there's a good chance Buck Showalter sits him.
Chris Davis, 1B4/23/2014 1:18:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who left Friday's game with a left oblique strain, is doubtful for Saturday's game against Kansas City
Insight: Oblique strains usually require a trip to the disabled list and can linger, so this is particularly bad news for a power hitter like Davis. Even if healthy enough to play on Saturday, its a bad matchup as he's just 1-for-16 against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Nick Markakis, RF4/23/2014 1:16:00 PM
Description: O's right fielder Nick Markakis hasn't had much luck against Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan in his career.
Insight: He's hitting an unimpressive .154 against the right-hander in 13 at bats. Markakis (.275, 0 HR, 5 RBI) is more valuable to his team in real life than he is to fantasy owners.
Matt Wieters, C4/22/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: Orioles manager Buck Showalter expects to have catcher Matt Wieters (forearm soreness) back in the lineup Wednesday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.
Insight: Wieters felt forearm soreness on a throw to second base in Sunday's game and was not in the starting lineup for a second straight game Tuesday.
Manny Machado, 3B4/22/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado will start his rehab assignment with Single-A Frederick on Friday. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Machado will probably miss all of April after undergoing offseason knee surgery but he could be back in the big leagues sometime in early May. Ryan Flaherty (.213, 0 HR, 3 RBI) and Jonathan Schoop (.259, 1 HR, 9 RBI) have been splitting third base duties in his absence.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/22/2014 5:21:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.

Matt Wieters, C4/22/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is dealing with right forearm soreness, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.
Insight: Wieters is out of the lineup for a second straight game on Tuesday. He said he felt the soreness on a throw to second base in Sunday's game.
Matt Wieters, C4/21/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is getting Monday morning off.
Insight: After the Orioles and Red Sox played Sunday night, this figured to be the strategy with an 11 am start time. Wieters has not had much success against Boston starter Clay Buchholz (.200, .561 OPS in 30 at-bats).
J.J. Hardy, SS4/21/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy left Sunday night's game against Boston after straining his hamstring and is not in Monday morning's lineup.
Insight: Hardy exited after the sixth inning. Ryan Flaherty will make the start at shortstop, but he holds little fantasy value batting .209 with a .540 OPS this season.
Nelson Cruz, LF4/21/2014 9:48:00 AM
Description: Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz is batting .400 against Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz (4-for-10).
Insight: Cruz is batting .333 with a .915 OPS over the past week. For the season he's hit three homers and knocked in 12 runs. He'll bat in the No. 2 hole on Monday, though he's hit better when lower in the lineup.
Nick Markakis, RF4/21/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Baltimore outfielder Nick Markakis is a cold 5-for-37 (.135) without an extra base hit against Boston starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: Markakis' .278 batting average comes with no homers, which makes him a poor value on Monday.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/20/2014 9:27:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy left Sunday night's game against Boston after straining his hamstring. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: Hardy exited after the sixth inning. Stephen Lombardozzi is now in at second base with Ryan Flaherty at shortstop. Though Hardy led all major league shortstops in HR last season (25), he's still searching for his first long ball of 2014.

Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy has had a tough time getting anything going against Boston's Jake Peavy.
Insight: Peavy has limited Hardy to one hit in 17 at-bats, a .059 average. Hardy, who has dealt with back spasms on and off this year, is hitting .244 with zero round-trippers.
Matt Wieters, C4/19/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is just 2-for-18 (.111) versus Boston starter Felix Doubront.
Insight: Wieters is having an excellent April, hitting .333 with three homers, 10 RBI and eight runs in 48 at-bats. The 27-year-old normally hits left-handers better than righties, but this matchup isn't favorable.
Adam Jones, CF4/19/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is just 2-for-19 (.105) with eight strikeouts against Boston left-hander Felix Doubront.
Insight: The right-handed hitting Jones has a better career batting average versus right-handed pitchers (.287) than lefties (.260) and this matchup follows that trend. Avoid him on Saturday.
Jonathan Schoop, 2BHot4/18/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop crushed four hits Friday in an 8-4 win over Boston.
Insight: The Baltimore rookie has hit .429 during his seven-game hitting streak. Schoop has seven RBI during that span. We'll see how he does Saturday against Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront (1-2, 6.75 ERA).
J.J. Hardy, SS4/18/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy is just 3-for-20 (.150) against Boston right-hander John Lackey.
Insight: Hardy has averaged 25.7 HR per season over the last three years, but he's never had an extra base hit against Lackey. He's also still looking for his first homer this season. It won't likely come on Friday. Avoid this matchup.

Dylan Bundy, SP4/14/2014 8:29:00 PM
Description: Orioles pitching prospect Dylan Bundy (elbow) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Monday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of mlb.com.
Insight: Prior to Bundy's Tommy John surgery last June, he was considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. If he avoids complications he could be ready to join the Orioles after the All-Star break.
Manny Machado, 3B4/14/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: O's third baseman Manny Machado did some running on Monday after taking a few swings in a simulated game on Saturday.

Chris Davis, 1B4/13/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis crushed his first homer of the season Sunday afternoon.

Description: Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings Sunday against Toronto.

Description: Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz is not listed in Sunday's starting lineup. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Delmon Young, who has mostly served as Baltimore's DH, will make his first start of the year in left field. Cruz (.250, 2 HR, 6 RBI) went 1-for-4 with a walk during last night's 12-inning win against Toronto.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/12/2014 7:00:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy is good to go for Saturday's game against Toronto. SOURCE: Dan Connolly, Baltimore Sun

Insight: Tillman has a 15/3 K/BB this season after going 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 179/68 K/BB in 206 1/3 innings in 2013. He'll have to keep his homers in check if he's going to keep up his hot start. He allowed 33 in 2013.
J.J. Hardy, SS4/11/2014 6:11:00 PM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (back) is not in the lineup Friday, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.

Chris Davis, 1B4/8/2014 8:16:00 PM
Description: We're eight games into the season and Baltimore 1B Chris Davis is still in search of his first homer.
Insight: By the eighth game last year, Davis already had five longballs. The good news is that he has gone 9-for-23 with three doubles and five RBI over his last six games.
Adam Jones, CF4/8/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Orioles center fielder Adam Jones hit his first homer of the season Tuesday at New York.

David Lough, RF4/8/2014 6:45:00 PM
Description: Baltimore outfielder David Lough is headed to the 15-day disabled list. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN

Manny Machado, 3B4/8/2014 2:05:00 PM
Description: O's third baseman Manny Machado still has no timetable for return.

Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters has a .379 batting average against Yankees starter Ivan Nova with four homers and a 1.351 OPS.
Insight: Wieters had two more hits on Monday to push his batting average up to .391. Now he faces the pitcher who he has hit the most homers off of over his career and the wind blowing out to center. Make him a must start.

Insight: We all expected this but manager Buck Showalter didn't make the official announcement until Monday. Hunter was used mostly as a setup man last season, recording a 6-5 record over 68 appearances. He's replacing Jim Johnson, who was traded to Oakland during the offseason.
Nick Markakis, RF3/31/2014 1:17:00 PM
Description: Baltimore outfielder Nick Markakis will start Monday's season opener against the Red Sox. SOURCE: Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com
Insight: He had been questionable with a stiff neck. Markakis' .271 batting average last season was the lowest of his career. He'll bat leadoff this afternoon against Boston.
Chris Davis, 1B3/31/2014 12:24:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis has struggled mightily against Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester.
Insight: He's hitting just .125 against Lester in 24 career at bats. Despite his struggles against Lester, Davis bashed seven homers against Boston in 2013. That was the most he had against any team.
Nelson Cruz, OF3/31/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Baltimore left fielder Nelson Cruz owns Red Sox ace Jon Lester.
Insight: In 22 at bats, Cruz has ten hits off Lester including two homers, a pair of doubles and a triple. He's hitting fifth today between Chris Davis and Matt Wieters.
Nick Markakis, RF3/30/2014 5:33:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis (neck) is questionable for the Birds' season opener on Monday, according to Roch Kubatko of mashsports.com.
Insight: Markakis wwas scratched from Saturday's lineup due to a stiff neck. The outfielder has averaged .287, 12 home runs, 62 RBI, 75 runs and a .764 OPS over the last four seasons.
Nelson Cruz, RF3/27/2014 11:03:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nelson Cruz's CT scan came back clean, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Cruz took a fastball to the dome from Alex Cobb on Thursday but he's fine.
Nelson Cruz, RF3/27/2014 8:31:00 PM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nelson Cruz left Thursday's game after taking a fastball to the helmet, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Cruz popped up quickly and walked off the field under his own power. He's probably fine but will presumably be tested for a concussion.
Nolan Reimold, LF3/26/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Baltimore outfielder Nolan Reimold will begin the year on the disabled list. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Neck problems have plagued Reimold (.195, 5 HR, 12 RBI in 2013) for most of the last two seasons. Until he gets healthy, fantasy owners can't rely on him.
Manny Machado, 3B3/23/2014 7:56:00 PM
Description: O's third baseman Manny Machado is headed to the disabled list. SOURCE: Baltimore Sun
Insight: His recovery from offseason knee surgery is taking longer than expected. We'd expect to see Machado (.283, 14 HR, 71 RBI) back on the field sometime in mid to late April.
Manny Machado, 3B3/15/2014 4:30:00 PM
Description: Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was tentatively scheduled to see his doctor on March 18, but his inability to run will force a postponement of the appointment, according to an mlb.com report.
Insight: Machado (.283, 14 HR, 71 RBI) had offseason knee surgery to repair a torn medial patellofemoral ligament and had hoped to be ready for Opening Day, but that now appears unlikely. Fantasy owners may miss some early games, but we still expect big things from Machado in 2014.
Matt Wieters, C3/14/2014 5:39:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters (ankle) will be out of the lineup until Monday, according to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com.
Insight: Wieters is still dealing with swelling in his ankle from the sprain he suffered earlier this week and the team is being cautious. The O's backstop has hit 22 or 23 homers in three straight seasons but hit just .235 with a .704 OPS last season. He struggled mightily against right-handed pitchers, batting .214 with 11 home runs and a .628 OPS in 360 at-bats. He hit .282 with 11 homers and an .872 OPS in 163 at-bats against lefties.
Johan Santana, SP3/4/2014 5:40:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have signed Johan Santana to a minor league contract, according to Jon Heyman of cbssports.com.
Insight: Santana didn't pitch last season because of another serious shoulder injury and is a long way away from returning. He topped out at just 81 mph during a tryout last week.
Manny Machado, 3B2/26/2014 4:44:00 PM
Description: According to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is tentatively scheduled to see his doctor on March 18 and could receive full clearance then.
Insight: Machado (.283, 14 HR, 71 RBI) had offseason knee surgery to repair a torn medial patellofemoral ligament and still hopes to be ready for Opening Day, but his status is up in the air. Barring a setback he should be back within the first two weeks of April.
Nelson Cruz, RF2/22/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: The Orioles have reportedly agreed to a deal with outfielder Nelson Cruz, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.
Insight: This was one of the best possible landing spots for Cruz (.266, 27 HR, 76 RBI in 110 games). Being in a strong lineup with the likes of Chris Davis, Adam Jones, Manny Machado should afford him plenty of RBI chances.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP2/17/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: According to Ken Rosenthal of foxsports.com, the Orioles have agreed to terms on a deal with Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Rosenthal said the numbers reported by Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com -- four years, $48 million -- are close to the actual contract value. Jimenez revived his career by going 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 182 2/3 innings last season (5-2 with a 1.65 ERA and 79 K in his last 60 IP) but he's still a huge risk due to his inconsistent pitching mechanics. Jimenez will have to pass a physical and the O's are known for putting players through stringent health tests (Grant Balfour and Tyler Colvin already failed tests with Baltimore this offseason), so the deal is not yet completed.
Suk-Min Yoon, SP2/17/2014 10:46:00 AM
Description: Right-hander Suk-Min Yoon still has to work out a visa issue before he can pitch in an exhibition game.
Insight: The 27-year-old will has the ability to be a back-end starter or pitch out of the bullpen. He owns a career 15-7 record with a 3.63 ERA and 1.292 WHIP in two years of work in the KBO. He's probably worth putting on your watch list, but not selecting, on draft day.
Manny Machado, 3B2/16/2014 4:04:00 PM
Description: According to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado (knee) has been cleared to perform all drills except for running the bases and sliding.
Insight: Machado (.283, 14 HR, 71 RBI) had offseason knee surgery to repair a torn medial patellofemoral ligament and still hopes to be ready for Opening Day, but his status is up in the air. Barring a setback he should be back within the first two weeks of April.
Joel Pineiro, SP2/3/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Right-handed starter Joel Pineiro is attempting a comeback, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.
Insight: Pineiro has four double-digit win seasons on his resume, but likely won't make it back to a level where fantasy owners will be interested. He last pitched in 2011.
Chris Davis, 1B1/19/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: O's first baseman Chris Davis got a nice raise on Friday. His new one-year deal is worth $10.35 million. SOURCE: Eduardo Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Davis earned $3.3 million last season. The deal ensures that Davis and the O's won't go to arbitration. Davis (.286, 53 HR, 138 RBI) won't be a candidate for free agency until after the 2015 season.
Alfredo Aceves, SP1/15/2014 3:42:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves has agreed to a minor league deal with Baltimore. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Aceves spent most of last season with Boston's Triple-A team, the Pawtucket Red Sox. The righthander has a history of alienating teammates and coaches with his eccentric behavior. We'll see how well he meshes with tightly-wound Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
Manny Machado, 3B1/13/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado is hoping Dr. Neal ElAttrache will clear him to resume baseball activities on Thursday. SOURCE: Baltimore Sun
Insight: Machado (.283, 14 HR, 71 RBI) is almost fully recovered from offseason knee surgery. The hope is that he'll be ready for Opening Day on March 31st.
Delmon Young, LF1/13/2014 9:45:00 PM
Description: Journeyman Delmon Young has found a new home. He's headed to Baltimore on a minor league deal.
Insight: He'll attempt to make the team out of spring training. In 103 games between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay last season, Young generated 11 HR and 38 RBI while hitting .260.
Manny Machado, 3B1/10/2014 3:40:00 PM
Description: Manager Buck Showalter has a feeling Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will be ready for Opening Day after having October knee surgery, reports beat writer Roch Kubatko.
Insight: Machado was having an excellent first full season, batting .283 with a league-leading 51 doubles, 14 HR, 71 RBI a .746 OPS an All-Star appearance and a Gold Glove. That would put him ahead of the original schedule.
Grant Balfour, RP12/19/2013 8:09:00 PM
Description: Closer Grant Balfour's two-year, $15 million deal with the Orioles is in "serious jeopardy" due to issues with his physical. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN UPDATE: Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports the issue is with Balfour's right shoulder. He had surgery for a rotator cuff and labrum tear in September 2005 but hasn't had problems since.
Insight: Balfour saved a career-high 38 games with the Athletics last season and has posted a sub-2.60 ERA in four straight seasons. Baltimore signed him to close after trading Jim Johnson to Balfour's old team in Oakland.
David Lough, RF12/19/2013 11:04:00 AM
Description: Kansas City shipped outfielder David Lough to Baltimore Wednesday for infielder Danny Valencia. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Lough is expected to platoon with Nolan Reimold in left field. He hit .286 with five homers, 33 RBI and five steals as a rookie last season.
Grant Balfour, RP12/17/2013 7:38:00 PM
Description: Closer Grant Balfour is headed to Baltimore on a two-year, $15 million deal. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: It's a great signing for the O's, who recently parted ways with Jim Johnson (traded to Oakland). Balfour is a fan favorite and also a consistent fantasy contributor with 20+ saves in each of his last two seasons. He's worth drafting in mixed and AL-only leagues.
Bud Norris, SP12/7/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: Baltimore righthander Bud Norris could be asked to close next season. SOURCE: Eduardo A. Encina, Baltimore Sun
Insight: The O's traded closer Jim Johnson to Oakland earlier this week. Norris would have more fantasy value as a ninth inning man than he would as a starter but it's probably not going to happen. Tommy Hunter throws harder and has better stuff than Norris. Plus, the O's need Norris in the rotation now that Scott Feldman has signed with Houston.
Jim Johnson, RP12/2/2013 9:22:00 PM
Description: Orioles closer Jim Johnson appears to be on the Dodgers' radar. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: It's unlikely the O's will be able to keep Johnson when he hits free agency in 2015 so they're looking to trade him now. It's unknown if the Dodgers would ask Johnson to close or have him setup ahead of current closer Kenley Jansen.
Nate McLouth, LF11/16/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Free agent Nate McLouth is hoping to return to Baltimore in 2014. SOURCE: Dan Connolly, Baltimore Sun
Insight: He's probably looking for a raise after making only $2 million last season. McLouth doesn't hit for much power (just 12 HR last season) but he can steal bases (30-of-37 in 2013). In deeper leagues, he could be worth a late-round flyer.
Matt Wieters, C11/13/2013 10:02:00 PM
Description: Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters could be dealt this winter. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The Orioles are also said to be shopping shortstop J.J. Hardy. Wieters (.235, 22 HR, 79 RBI) hasn't quite lived up to the hype but he's still one of the more productive catchers in fantasy baseball.
Michael Morse, RF10/16/2013 11:25:00 AM
Description: Impending free agent Michael Morse is undergoing wrist surgery on Wednesday. SOURCE: Dan Connolly, Baltimore Sun
Insight: The timetable for recovery is about 6-to-8 weeks. Morse may have trouble landing a long-term deal after floundering in the second half (.143 AVG after the All-Star break).
Manny Machado, 3B10/14/2013 7:07:00 PM
Description: MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli reports Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day after having knee surgery on Monday.
Insight: Machado's timetable for recovery should be about six months, though general manager Dan Duquette believes that estimate could be a bit conservative. His backup, Danny Valencia, won't be a fantasy option.
Wei-Yin Chen, SP10/10/2013 8:52:00 PM
Description: Orioles starter Wei-Yen Chen had surgery to remove bone spurs in his right knee Thursday, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.
Insight: Chen allowed 11 home runs in his final 48 2/3 innings and had a 5.92 ERA in that span to finish with a 4.07 ERA on the year. He should be ready for spring training.
Manny Machado, 3B10/10/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: According to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has elected to undergo reconstructive knee surgery.
Insight: Machado initially opted for rest and rehab after tearing his medial patellofemoral ligament late in the season, but he'll have the surgery and miss 4-6 months.
Michael Morse, RF10/8/2013 5:57:00 PM
Description: Michael Morse will undergo surgery on his left wrist.
Insight: Morse's season started with so much promise after he led the majors in homers during spring training and hit six in his first nine games of the regular season. However, he dealt with numerous injuries and finished the season with a .215 average, 13 homers, 27 RBI, 34 runs and a .651 OPS in 337 combined plate appearances with Seattle and Baltimore. He went 10-for-83 (.120) with one home run over his final 27 games and 0-for-22 in his last 10.
Manny Machado, 3B9/30/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Dr. James Andrews confirmed that Manny Machado's injured knee won't require surgery. SOURCE: MASN
Insight: When Machado fell awkwardly on the way to first base last week against the Rays, it looked for sure like he had just torn his ACL. Instead it was a torn medial patellar ligament, which is far less serious. His recovery timetable is still 6-to-8 weeks.
Jim Johnson, RP9/29/2013 7:17:00 PM
Description: Baltimore closer Jim Johnson logged his 50th save Sunday in a win against the Red Sox.
Insight: He's the first closer to reach 50 saves in back-to-back seasons since Eric Gagne did it for the Dodgers in 2002 and 2003. It wasn't always pretty. Johnson did blow nine save chances this season. But more often than not, Johnson took care of business. Look for the big righthander to return to the Orioles in 2014.
Chris Davis, 1B9/29/2013 3:35:00 PM
Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis left Sunday's game against Boston because of a sprained wrist. SOURCE: Rich Dubroff, Comcast Sportsnet Baltimore
Insight: The injury occurred when Jacoby Ellsbury ran into Davis on a play at first base. Davis will finish the year with a league-best 53 HR and 138 RBI. He's expected to be the runner-up to Miguel Cabrera in American League MVP voting.
Adam Jones, CF9/29/2013 1:09:00 PM
Description: O's center fielder Adam Jones is getting a rest Sunday versus Boston.
Insight: After going two years without missing a game, Jones has now missed two contests in the last week. Nate McLouth (.258, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 30 SB) will take over in center field.
Matt Wieters, C9/29/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will sit out the final game of the season Sunday.
Insight: Five years into his career, it looks like we know what type of hitter Wieters is going to be. In the last three seasons, he hit 22 homers twice and 23 once. He batted .235 with a .704 OPS and 79 RBI this season and has averaged .249/.315/.434 with 77 RBI per season since 2011.
Michael Morse, RF9/28/2013 7:58:00 PM
Description: Michael Morse's injured left wrist might require offseason surgery. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Morse has already set up to two doctors appointments including a visit to Dr. Brian Schofield in Sarasota next week. The veteran outfielder struggled mightily during his brief tenure with Baltimore, producing just three hits in 29 at bats for the O's (.103 AVG). Morse is set to become a free agent this offseason.
Miguel Gonzalez, SPHot9/26/2013 10:25:00 PM
Description: Baltimore righthander Miguel Gonzalez held the Blue Jays to just one unearned run in seven innings Thursday at Camden Yards.
Insight: Gonzalez will finish the season on a high note. He went 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in his final five starts of 2013. The Orioles will finish up the regular season by hosting the Red Sox for a three-game set.
Chris Davis, 1B9/26/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Orioles first baseman Chris Davis missed Thursday's game with a sore foot, but is expected to play on Friday.
Insight: Davis is finishing off a "career" year, batting .285 with 52 HR, 137 RBI and 102 runs scored with a 1.000 OPS.
Adam Jones, CF9/26/2013 9:15:00 AM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones had Wednesday's game off but he'll likely be back in the lineup Thursday to face Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle, who he is 8-for-21 (.381) with two doubles and a homer against.
Insight: Jones has had another strong season, tying last season's total with 32 homers, scoring 98 runs, stealing 14 bags, hitting .285 and driving in a career-high 106 runs.
Nick Markakis, RFCold9/26/2013 9:11:00 AM
Description: Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis has gone 16-for-36 (.444) with three doubles, two homers and four walks against Toronto's Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Markakis went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in a game Buehrle started on Sept. 15, but he has just eight hits in 37 at-bats (.216) since then and is hitting .269 with a .679 OPS on the year. Get him in the lineup against Buehrle if you own him.
Ryan Flaherty, 2B9/25/2013 10:40:00 PM
Description: Orioles infielder Ryan Flaherty blasted a pair of homers Wednesday in a victory over the Blue Jays.
Insight: It's Flaherty's second multi-home run game of the season. The Orioles, who were eliminated from the Wild Card race on Tuesday, had lost six in a row before Wednesday night's win. They'll finish up with one more game against Toronto and then three more against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.
Adam Jones, CF9/25/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones won't play Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: The Orioles were eliminated from the AL Wild Card race last night. This is a rare sight as Jones (.285, 32 HR, 106 RBI) had started 322 games in a row before tonight.
Chris Tillman, SP9/24/2013 10:44:00 PM
Description: Over his first 22 starts, Chris Tillman had a 3.89 ERA and went 14-3. In his last 10, he has posted a 3.12 ERA but went 2-4.
Insight: Tillman took a no decision Tuesday against the Blue Jays despite throwing seven innings, striking out nine and allowing one run on five hits. He's 16-7 with a 3.62 ERA this season.
Manny Machado, 3B9/24/2013 9:53:00 PM
Description: Good news for the Orioles: Manny Machado's MRI revealed no damage to his ACL or MCL. He does, however, have a medial patellofemoral ligament tear in his left knee and will need 6-8 weeks to recover. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Machado, who had his knee buckle on the way to first base Monday night and was stretchered off the field, is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. He'll rest for four weeks before being reevaluated to determine if a minor surgical procedure is necessary.
Manny Machado, 3B9/23/2013 7:21:00 PM
Description: Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado suffered what looked like a serious knee injury Monday in a win against Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Machado, who had his knee buckle on the way to first base, was in serious pain and could be out for a very long time. He left the field on a stretcher and was replaced by Danny Valencia at third base. The 21-year-old has not missed a game this season.
Bud Norris, SP9/22/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: According to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, Bud Norris is the likely starter for the Orioles' game Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Jason Hammel is the other option being considered. Norris has been dealing with some elbow soreness and hasn't started since Sept. 8, though he was forced into action for 2 1/3 innings Friday in an 18-inning game against the Rays.
