Cornell's Mathews, Harvard's Ortiz win Bushnell Cup

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Cornell sophomore quarterback Jeff Mathews and Harvard senior defensive tackle Josue Ortiz were named the 2011 recipients of the Asa S. Bushnell Cup, which honors the Ivy League football players of year, on Monday.

It was the first time in the 41-year history of the Bushnell Cup that the league presented separate offensive and defensive players of the year.

Mathews, the fourth Cornell player to be honored as a Bushnell Cup recipient, set Big Red and Ivy League records for passing yardage in a game (548 yards at Penn) and season (3,412 yards), while also setting school records for touchdown passes (25), total offense (3,274 yards), completion percentage (.679) and passing efficiency (162.60).

Ortiz, the fifth Harvard player to hoist the Bushnell Cup, led the Ivy League with 10 solo sacks and was fourth with 14.5 tackles for a loss. He made 38 tackles, had two fumble recoveries and forced one fumble.

Both players were named to the Ivy League first team last month.
