GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers step out of Big Ten play and pay a visit to
the Navy Midshipmen for a non-conference duel at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial
This will be the final non-conference test for the Hoosiers, who are coming
off of a heart-breaking 52-49 loss to Ohio State. Indiana opened up the season
with a pair of triumphs over Indiana State (24-17) and Massachusetts (45-6),
but has since lost four in a row. Second-year head coach Kevin Wilson has made
improvements since taking over. For just the second time in school history,
the Hoosiers have scored 24 points in six straight games in the same season.
Navy evened its record at 3-3 last week with a 31-13 victory on the road over
Central Michigan. It was the second win in a row and third win in four tries
for the Midshipmen after they beat Air Force in overtime in their prior
outing. Coach Ken Niumatalolo comes into today's contest with a 35-24 career
The last time the Midshipmen beat a team from the Big Ten was 1979 when they
downed Illinois in Champaign. This will be the third time these two programs
meet on the gridiron. The Hoosiers won both of the previous meetings which
took place in the 1985 and 1986 seasons.
Although it lost its starting quarterback and leader Tre Roberson to a season-
ending injury in the second game of the season, Indiana is leading the Big Ten
in passing offense (313 ypg) and is third in scoring offense with an average
of 35.5 ppg. Indiana gained 481 yards of total offense in last week's loss to
Cameron Coffman has played well since stepping in for the injured Roberson.
The sophomore quarterback is 108-of-172 passing, for 1,076 yards, seven
touchdowns, and only one interception. His average of 215.2 passing yards per
game is the third highest in the Big Ten.
When Coffman went down in last week's game against Ohio State, true freshman
Nate Sudfeld entered in the fourth quarter to lead a rally. Sudfeld completed
13-of-20 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns against the tough Buckeyes'
Cody Latimer and Kofi Hughes are both in the top 10 in receiving in the Big
Ten. Latimer has 27 catches for 431 yards to rank fourth while Hughes made 19
receptions for 301 yards to rank ninth.Stephen Houston is IU's top rusher with
386 yards and six touchdowns on 63 carries. He also has a pair of receiving
On the other side of the ball, Indiana is giving up 31.8 ppg., with foes
rolling up 463.8 ypg. The Hoosiers have been particularly weak against the
run, yielding 221.2 ypg, with 13 of the opposition's 23 offensive TDs coming
on the ground.
Adam Replogle is leading the team with 40 total stops and David Cooper is in
second place with just one less. Replogle also has recorded a team-best 2.5
Navy has one of the worst scoring offenses in the country, ranking 107th out
of 120 FBS teams with just 19.5 ppg. It is coming off of a 31-point scoring
output, which is its highest versus an FBS program this season.
The Midshipmen are notorious for their triple-option offensive attack, but
last week they surprisingly relied on the aerial attack for scoring. Keenan
Reynolds had three touchdown passes and 134 passing yards to lead Navy past
CMU. Reynolds is slated to start this week over the team's third-leading
rusher, Trey Miller.
Noah Copeland (77 carries, 349 yards) and Gee Gee Greene (41 carries, 292
yards, TD) share the load in the backfield.
With Reynolds under center, Navy is mixing in more passing plays into its
gameplan. Shawn Lynch (155 yards, nine catches) is leading the team. Greene
made two catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns last week. Brandon Turner
also made two grabs versus CMU, which he turned into 42 yards and one
While picking up the victory last week, Navy set a new season-best by limiting
the Chippewas to just 221 yards of total offense. The Midshipmen have held
their last four opponents to an average of 12.3 ppg
Indiana is coming off one of its best performances in recent history against
one of the premier programs in the country. The Hoosiers' defensive unit needs
to make adjustments and figure out a way to slow down Navy's rushing attack or
the Midshipmen will be celebrating their third win in a row when time expires.
