Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Kohorst kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to lift the UNLV Rebels to a thrilling 39-37 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in a Mountain West Conference clash at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Kohorst was a perfect 4-of-4 on field goal attempts in the contest for UNLV (4-2, 2-0 MWC), which has won four-straight games for the first time since 2000. Caleb Herring threw for 385 yards and a score on 34-of-57 passing but was intercepted once. Tim Cornett tallied 162 yards and two scores on 29 carries and Marcus Sullivan (11 receptions, 113 yards) and Devante Davis (nine receptions, 148 yards) each had big games through the air.
Sean Schroeder threw for 325 yards and four scores on 24-of-47 passing for Hawaii (0-6, 0-4), which is off to its worst start since 1998, when it went winless. Chris Gant had six receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns while Steven Lakalaka had 48 yards and a score on 12 carries.
After neither team was able to put any points up in the first quarter, Tyler Hadden gave Hawaii a 3-0 lead early on in the second with a 31-yard field goal.
The Rebels tied the game a few minutes later when Kohorst booted a 35-yard field goal.
Midway through the second quarter UNLV marched all the way to the Hawaii one- yard line but failed to punch it in on a pair of chances and had to settle for a 19-yard field goal from Kohorst.
The Rainbow Warriors were the first team to get in the end zone in the game when Schroeder threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Donnie King late in the first half.
UNLV answered quickly, scoring a touchdown on a one-yard run from Cornett less than a minute later.
The Rebels' lead would be short-lived however as Schroeder threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Gant a little more than a minute later to give the advantage back to Hawaii.
UNLV scored the first points of the second half on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Herring to Anthony Williams.
A 41-yard field goal from Kohorst nearly four minutes later extended the Rebels' lead to 23-17.
Cornett then scored again, this time on a five-yard run, later in the third quarter to push the Rebels even further out in front.
UNLV continued to pull away when the fourth quarter got underway as Herring scored on an eight-yard touchdown run, though the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Rainbow Warriors got themselves back within striking distance with a pair of quick scores. First Lakalaka scored on a 15-yard touchdown run and then Billy Ray Stutzman caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Schroeder less than three minutes later. Hawaii failed on a two-point conversion attempt after Lakalaka's score, leaving the score at 36-30.
Hawaii then took the lead with just 1:44 to play when Gant scored again, this time on a 44-yard pass from Schroeder. However UNLV was able to save itself as Herring led the team 51 yards on 12 plays to set up Kohorst's game- winning kick.
