NCAA Game Summary - South Florida at Michigan State
(Saturday, September 7)
Final Score: Michigan State 21, South Florida 6
East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Shilique Calhoun scored a pair of defensive touchdowns to lead the Michigan State Spartans to a 21-6 win over the South Florida Bulls in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Named one of the top defensive players to watch in the Big Ten this season, Calhoun is still just a sophomore, yet made a huge impact on the outcome this afternoon as he recorded two tackles behind the line of scrimmage and one sack for the Spartans (2-0).
Offensively, Michigan State had three quarterbacks (Connor Cook, Andrew Maxwell and Tyler O'Connor) combine to hit 12-of-24 passes for a mere 94 yards. On the ground it was Nick Hall with nine carries for a team-best 63 yards.
The Bulls (0-2), stunned by McNeese State in the opener last weekend, 53-21, generated a paltry 155 yards of total offense, a good chunk of which was supplied by Marcus Shaw who ran for a game-high 94 yards on 23 attempts. Quarterback Bobby Eveld converted just 6-of-25 passes for 66 yards, was intercepted once and sacked three times.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Michigan State put the first points on the board when Calhoun recovered a fumble and took it four yards into the end zone for the hosts.
The Bulls responded with a pair of field goals by Marvin Kloss from 49 and 21 yards out, cutting the deficit to just a single point at the break, 7-6.
The Spartans went on to record a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach. Calhoun struck again when he picked off a pass and found the end zone 56 yards later with under seven minutes remaining in the third frame. Michigan State then added a two-yard TD run by Jeremy Langford to complete the day's scoring.
The Spartans managed only 265 yards of offense on the afternoon, converting 4- of-14 on third down.
The start of game was delayed more than an hour due to lightning in the vicinity. This was the second time in as many games that MSU had to wait out inclement weather, the team also retreating to its locker room during the second quarter of the season opener against Western Michigan.
