(Saturday, October 19)
Final Score: Michigan State 14, Purdue 0
East Lansing, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Michigan State Spartans' defense stifled the Purdue Boilermakers on their way to a 14-0 victory in a Big Ten Conference matchup at Spartan Stadium.
Michigan State (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) quarterback Connor Cook did not have a great game but did what was needed to win, completing 13-of-25 passes for 107 yards while going without an interception. Jeremy Langford led all rushers with a career-high 131 yards on 24 carries. Tony Lippett tallied five catches for 49 yards and also threw a touchdown pass.
The Boilermakers (1-6, 0-3) have now lost five straight games. Quarterback Danny Etling couldn't get much going, completing 14-of-25 passes for 160 yards and an interception. Akeem Hunt was Purdue's top rusher with 43 yards on nine attempts. Cameron Posey led all receivers with 50 yards on five catches.
An Etling fumble led to a 45-yard touchdown return by Allen Denicos to put the Spartans up 7-0 early in the second quarter.
Action remained quiet until the fourth quarter, when Lippett took a hand off on an end-around and completed a five-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Gleichert. It was the only red zone possession for either team on the day.
Although Michigan State amassed just 294 total yards, it held Purdue to a mere 226 yards. MSU came into the game with the nation's top-ranked total defense, allowing less than 230 yards per game.
The Spartans sacked Etling five times, while the Boilermakers failed to get to Cook.
