NCAA Game Summary - Washington at Arizona State
(Saturday, October 19th)
Final Score: Arizona State 53, (20) Washington 24
Tempe, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Marion Grice scored three times and Arizona State dominated No. 20 Washington 53-24 in a Pac-12 battle on Saturday.
Grice carried the ball 21 times for 158 yards and two scores and added four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown for the Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12), who have won their past two since a loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 5.
Taylor Kelly went 26-for-42 for 271 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran the ball 13 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
"I am just very impressed with our total team performance," said Arizona State head coach Todd Graham. "What are amazing to me are all the mistakes. We can play a whole lot better than we played tonight and we played really, really well so we have a chance."
Keith Price was 16-for-39 for 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (4-3, 1-3), who have dropped three straight.
"That was embarrassing. We weren't good enough," said Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian. "We weren't coached well enough, we didn't perform well enough, and we weren't physical enough, not nearly physical enough against a good football team. Give Arizona State credit, they outcoached us and they outplayed us, and at the end of the day the result was the result."
Washington's first possession bore fruit as the team marched 60 yards over 11 plays, with Bishop Sankey running the ball in around the left end for a 1-yard score and a 7-0 lead with 10:29 to play in the first. A 23-yard catch by Joshua Perkins set up a 1st-and-goal at the 1 prior to Sankey's run.
Following an exchange of punts, Arizona State got on the board thanks to a 26- yard field goal from Zane Gonzalez to make it a 7-3 game with 3:01 to play in the first quarter.
Starting the second quarter with the ball, the Sun Devils took the lead as Kelly found Grice in the end zone from 15 yards out. The extra point was blocked and it was a 9-7 game with 13:20 to play in the half.
Arizona State's next drive paid off with another three points, as Gonzalez's 22-yard field goal finished off a 10-play, 57-yard march for a 12-7 lead with 7:12 to play in the first half.
Following a three-and-out from Washington, the Sun Devils got another three points on a 36-yard field goal from Gonzalez, and the team again forced a Washington punt to get the ball back near midfield.
Taking advantage of the short field, Arizona State found the end zone as Kelly ran the ball in from a yard out for a 22-7 lead with just 2:08 to play in the half.
Once again, the defense forced a punt to get the ball back, and Kelly continued to produce as he floated a pass to the right corner of the end zone that saw Chris Coyle come down with a leaping catch from 14 yards out to make it a 29-7 game going into the break.
Washington started the second half with the ball and struck quick as Price hit Kevin Smith in stride for a 70-yard touchdown to make it a 29-14 game just over a minute in.
Arizona State, though, came right back with a long drive to kill any momentum Washington might have gained, as the team went 77 yards over 11 plays with Kelly taking the ball in from a yard out for a 36-14 lead with 10:11 to play in the third.
The Huskies drove down to the ASU 4 on their next drive, but only came away with a 27-yard field goal from Travis Coons for a 36-17 game with 6:12 left in the third.
The Sun Devils got a 21-yard field goal from Gonzalez later in the third for a 39-17 game, and Grice's 1-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter extended the lead to 29 points.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins' 20-yard touchdown catch on Washington's ensuing drive and Grice's 14-yard TD run later in the frame capped the scoring.
