GAME NOTES: Georgia Southern and Charlotte will meet for the first time since 2006 when the Eagles visit Halton Arena for non-conference action against the 49ers.

Georgia Southern opened the season with an 85-54 loss to the Valparaiso Crusaders. The Eagles tied for second place in the Southern Conference's South Division last year, finishing with a 12-6 league mark after struggling in non- conference play. This will be the second straight road game for the Eagles, as four of their first five are away from home. Now in his fourth season at the helm, coach Charlton Young is hoping to finish with a winning record for the first time in his career.

Now in his third season as Charlotte's head coach, Alan Major has compiled a 24-37 overall record. The 49ers are off to a 1-0 start after posting a 68-58 victory over Charleston Southern last Friday. Charlotte overcame an early nine-point deficit and controlled things for the majority of the second half.

This bout marks the 10th meeting between these two programs, and the first since 2006. Charlotte owns a 7-2 lead in the all-time series.

As expected, Eric Ferguson was the centerpiece of GSU's offense in its season opener. The junior forward went 5-of-13 from the floor for 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and turned the ball over eight times in the blowout loss. Cleon Rodgers attempted six fewer field goals than Ferguson, but still finished with a team-high 18 points after converting 9-of-12 at the charity stripe. Marvin Baynham showed off his rebounding ability by snatching seven boards in just 18 minutes of action.

The 49ers' season-opening win was very impressive considering it was without their star forward Chris Braswell, who was serving a one-game suspension. Braswell will make a huge impact in this one as he produced 15.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season. Guard Terrance Williams led the charge versus Charleston Southern by tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds. Pierria Henry's active hands yielded him five steals, and Darion Clark pulled down a team-best 11 boards.

The 49ers lacked an inside scoring presence in their opener, but the guard play was tremendous. Braswell's return will make this team much deeper and better overall. Ferguson will need to cut down on his turnovers and catch fire for the Eagles to avoid an 0-2 start.
