GAME NOTES: The Cleveland State Vikings look to get back on the winning track when they host the Akron Zips on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Wolstein Center.
The Vikings dropped a tough triple-overtime 85-82 decision at Drexel on Wednesday night. The loss came two games after nearly upending nationally ranked Kentucky in Lexington. On Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Jon Harris scored a career-high 27 points and Bryn Forbes added 23 points for the Vikings, who are 1-2 in their last three games.
Cleveland State trailed the Dragons by 10 points, 30-20, at halftime, but used 18 second-half points from Harris to get back into the game. However, the Vikings failed to hold on to a four-point lead in the second OT and then after going ahead 78-77 in the third OT, Drexel used a 6-1 run to take control.
Forbes leads the Vikings in scoring with 19.8 points per game and uses a 95.6 percent free-throw shooting percentage to cushion those stats. The sharp- shooter is also hitting nearly half of his 3-point attempts. As a team, Cleveland State averages nearly 77 points per game and shoots over 57 percent from the field.
Akron will likely enter this game a little rusty. The last time the Zips took the court was on November 16 when they lost 80-73 at Middle Tennessee. Quincy Diggs led the way for the Zips, scoring a career-high 26 points. However, Pat Forsythe was the only other Akron player in double figures with 11 points, as the Zips dropped their second straight contest.
Diggs leads the Zips in scoring with 15.7 points per game, while fellow senior forward Demetrius Treadwell is second with 12 points and a team-leading 7.7 rebounds per game. Other than that, it's hard for Akron to find any other scoring, as the squad averages just 69 points per game.
Even though Akron holds the all-time advantage in this series and easily handled the Viking a year ago to the tune of an 87-57 rout, the three-week layoff will be too much to overcome. Cleveland State has suffered a couple of tough losses lately and will be looking to take its frustrations out on an over-matched Akron group.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Cleveland State 85, Akron 70
