GAME NOTES: The Xavier Musketeers end a week-long layoff on Saturday when they host the Bowling Green Falcons in non-conference action at the Cintas Center.
Although they have lost three straight, the Musketeers should be well rested for this contest. Xavier hasn't taken the court since Nov. 30 when the team lost to USC, 84-78, in its final game at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
Semaj Christon scored 21 points and dished out seven assists for the Musketeers, who lost all three games in the Bahamas after winning five straight to open the season. Myles Davis added 16 points, Matt Stainbrook scored 14, and Isaiah Philmore finished with 10 off the bench for Xavier, which led by as many as five midway through the first half, but saw USC score 27 of the final 38 points of the opening half to go into the locker room ahead 45-34. The Trojans later pushed the lead to 24 points before the Musketeers put together a late charge. However, they were never able to come all the way back as they shot 39 percent from the floor and made only 9-of-17 free throws over the final 20 minutes.
The Musketeers now return home where they are a perfect 5-0 on the season. Christon, a sophomore, leads Xavier in scoring with 15.1 points per game and in assists with 4.4 per contest. Junior center Matt Stainbrook is second on the team with 10.8 points and leads the squad with 7.9 boards per game. Davis, a freshman guard, has been coming on as of late. He is averaging 13 points in his last four games and leads the team in 3-pointers made per game.
Bowling Green enters this game coming off a 74-62 win over Western Kentucky on Monday night. Sophomore forward Spencer Parker led the way for the Falcons, scoring a career-high 20 points. Richaun Holmes also had a career-high with 18 points and recorded five of Bowling Green's season-best 10 blocks in the game. Craig Sealey added 13 points for Bowling Green, which used a 15-0 run to open the second half to take a 17-point lead and cruise to the finish.
After opening the season 1-3, the Falcons have alternated wins and losses over their last three outings. The squad has lost its two true games this season and is 1-3 away from home when counting neutral site games. Those three losses have come by an average of nearly 20 points per game.
Parker leads Bowling Green, averaging 14.4 points per game. He's scored in double figures in all seven games this season. Chauncey Orr is adding 14 points per game for the Falcons, who are scoring an average of just 67.3 points early on.
While Bowling Green leads this series 6-5, Xavier has won the last three meetings. The most recent contest came on Nov. 17, 2009 when the Musketeers came away with a 101-57 victory. Even though it's been four years since the last meeting, don't expect much to change. Xavier has the better athletes and Bowling Green is too young with only two seniors to come away with a quality road win like this.
