GAME NOTES: The Long Beach State 49ers continue their treacherous non- conference schedule with a visit to PNC Arena for a tilt against the NC State Wolfpack.
The 49ers fell to 1-8 and lost their eighth game in a row on Tuesday as they were downed, 78-61, by Creighton. LBSU has already played Arizona, Kansas State, Michigan, VCU and Washington, which should have it playing at a very high level when it enters Big West play in January. Coach Dan Monson has been tied for second in school history with 105 wins since the team's season- opening victory over Hawaii Pacific. The 49ers are being outscored by an average of 10.4 points per game.
NC State will be looking to continue its winning ways after its 69-48 triumph over Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday. The Wolfpack rose to 5-2 with the victory. Coach Mark Gottfried's team attacks the basket for its points more than any other school in the nation. NC State has scored 68.2 percent of its points on 2-point field goal shots and ranks 22nd in the country with a 56.2 shooting percentage on attempts from inside the arc.
This will be just the second meeting in history between LBSU and NC State. The Wolfpack completed a 100-73 rout of the 49ers on Jan. 6, 1979 in the first encounter.
LBSU was limited to 38.5 percent shooting from the field including a 3-of-15 clip from behind the 3-point line by Creighton in its last outing. Mike Caffey, who scored a career-high 28 points against Washington, finished with 11 point after 27 minutes against the Bluejays. A.J. Spencer tallied 13 points and five boards while Dan Jennings added 10 points. Caffey is leading the team on the season with 16 ppg and has knocked down a team-high 17 shots from beyond the arc. Jennings contributed 12.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The 49ers' biggest issue is their poor ball movement, which has resulted in only 95 assists against 119 turnovers.
NC State completely shut down Northwestern to earn its third straight win. The Wildcats finished 13-of-52 from the field and with only six assists to 11 turnovers. The ACC's leading scorer T.J. Warren led the way for the Wolfpack with 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Jordan Vandenberg chimed in with 12 points and five blocked shots. Lennard Freeman registered a double- double with 10 points and 10 boards. The Wolfpack made over 55 percent of their shots from inside the 3-point line. Sophomore guard Tyler Lewis was held scoreless, but dealt out seven assists in 16 minutes. Warren has scored 82 points over the last three games, which is the most by any player for a three- game span for the school since the 1991-92 season.
The 49ers will get significantly better in January when UCLA transfer Tyler Lamb becomes eligible. They will have trouble finding any success on the offensive end against NC State's stifling defense in Raleigh. NC State's outside shooting could hold it back down the line, but it should have no problem finding ways to score inside against LBSU.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: NC State 75, Long Beach State 62
