GAME NOTES: The Auburn Tigers will try to take down the host College of Charleston Cougars, as the two teams square off in the next round of the Charleston Classic on Friday night at TD Arena.
This will be the third meeting in history between these schools on the hardwood, and Auburn will be looking to increase its all-time series lead to 3-0. The bout is part of the eight-team Charleston Classic, and the winner will advance to play the victor of Boston College/Dayton matchup.
The Tigers are 1-1 after their 79-59 setback to the Murray State Racers in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. Auburn fell behind by 26 points in the first half after failing to connect on any of its five three-point field goal attempts. Coach Tony Barbee was not happy with his squad's carelessness which led to a costly 20 turnovers. Auburn opened up the season with a 61-50 triumph over IUPU-Fort Wayne.
The Cougars also enter with a 1-1 record after being defeated, 64-53, by St. John's in their tournament opener. College of Charleston shot a red-hot 56.3 percent from the floor in its season-opening rout of Towson (75-58). Coach Doug Wojcik enters just his third game with the program after spending the past seven seasons at Tulsa, where he became the winningest head coach in Golden Hurricane history. Wojcik has plenty to work with this season as he inherited a Charleston team that finished 19-12 last season.
Auburn was guided to its season-opening win over IPFW by Frankie Sullivan's 26-point performance, which came courtesy of an 11-of-20 shooting effort. The senior guard was shut down by Murray State and finished with only seven points on 2-of-13 shooting from the field. Rob Chubb is a strong interior player for coach Barbee's squad. The senior center has scored in double figures in both of the team's outings this season. Asauhn Dixon-Tatum netted a season-high 12 pints in Thursday's loss to MSU.
The Cougars will be led on the floor by Andrew Lawrence, who represented the Great Britain National Team in this past summer's London Olympic Games. The senior point guard tallied only seven points versus SJU in the tournament opening setback. The trigger happy Anthony Stitt plays alongside Lawrence in the CofC backcourt. The three-point launching sophomore averaged 9.7 ppg as a rookie and netted 12 points in the season opener, but he missed all three of his attempts from long distance on Thursday. Power forward Trent Weideman has scored in double figures in both games this season, while Adjehi Baru provides size and rebounding for Charleston.
The Cougars and Tigers should battle it out to the very end as neither side has a noticeable advantage. The Cougars hold a sight edge as the game will be played in the friendly atmosphere of TD Arena. Auburn needs to get Sullivan going to stand a chance.
