GAME NOTES: In a non-conference tilt at the Prudential Center the Seton Hall Pirates will square off with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Sunday afternoon.
There hasn't been a whole lot of home games for Saint Peter's early on as this is the fourth of five games on the road to start the season. During that stretch the Peacock's have turned in some strong efforts and enter play 3-1, coming off a 62-54 loss to Binghamton. Saint Peter's will be at home in its next six games.
Seton Hall has also enjoyed a relatively nice start at 4-1 overall. The Pirates' first four games were part of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off where they beat UMKC (75-36), Norfolk State (78-65) and Rhode Island (60-55) but did take a loss to Washington (84-73 OT). The most recent win was a 76-49 defeat of Maine, also at the Prudential Center. The Pirates will be on the road to face LSU next.
Seton Hall has played no other non-Big East team more than Saint Peter's. The Pirates have won 60 of 83 previous meetings and enter this contest on a 16- game series win streak. They have also won 24 of the last 25 meetings, overall.
It was a tough matchup for Saint Peter's against Binghamton. The Peacocks hung around for most of the game but ran out of gas at the end when Bingham went on a 7-0 spurt to wrest control. The Peacocks shot just 33.3 percent in the game including a 29.4 percent effort in the final 20 minutes. The Pirates were also the victims of a 46-35 difference in rebounds. Blaise Ffrench was the lead scoring option with 19 points.
On the year it has been the efforts of Saint Peter's on defense that has helped it achieve success. The Peacocks are allowing only 59.8 points per game and limiting opponents to just 38.1 percent shooting. That has helped overcome just a 60.5 points per game scoring average and a -3.4 rebound differential. Desi Washington (15.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is a consistent force both in the score sheet and on the boards. Ffrench (12.2 ppg, 5.5 apg) has been an extremely efficient and unselfish player. Ffrench has connected on 62.5 percent of his field goal attempts and leads the team in assists. Yvon Raymond (12.5 ppg 5.8 rpg) is also a double-figure scoring threat.
Although it shot just 35.5 percent in the first half, Seton Hall took a commanding 31-20 lead at halftime against Maine by holding a 15-0 edge in points from beyond the arc. That allowed the Pirates to cruise on the back of 57.6 percent shooting in the second half. The Pirates forced 27 turnovers in the game which they converted into 33 points. Aaron Cosby came off the bench to pour in 19 points including four triples.
Seton Hall should be able to match Saint Peter's defensive intensity as the Pirates surrender only 57.8 points per game and allow opponents to connect on only 38.9 percent of their field goal attempts. Seton Hall has a marked advantage on the other end where it scores 72.4 points per game while shooting at a 45.4 percent clip. Seton Hall also has a +3.4 rebounding margin. Athletic swingman Fuquan Edwin (18.6 ppg, 6,.4 rpg, 3.4 spg) has been a prolific scorer and rebounder and a disruptive force on defense. Eugene Teague (12.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg) is a pillar on the inside and will need to continue to power the frontcourt efforts as Brandon Mobley (4.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.0 bpg) remains out with a hyper extended left knee.
Both of these teams can play well on the defensive end. Only one has enough offensive firepower to put itself in a position to win though, and that is the host Pirates.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Seton Hall 74, Saint Peter's 59
