GAME NOTES: The California Golden Bears will make the trip to the Rocky Mountains on Friday for a non-conference clash with the Denver Pioneers.
California has gotten off to a quick start and is fresh off a 79-62 win over Pepperdine at home. The Golden Bears opened their season with a 78-65 win over CSU Bakersfield. Both games came in Berkeley, but now the team hits the road where Cal went 5-6 in true road games a year ago.
Denver is coming off a dominating 68-51 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, that evened the team's record at 1-1. The Pioneers opened the 2012-13 season with a disappointing 65-58 road loss at Iona. Denver will remain at home for its next contest against Colorado State.
California leads the all-time series 3-0, including an 80-59 lopsided affair in Berkeley last season.
The Golden Bears have kicked off the season well, earning a 13-point win over CSU Bakersfield and a 17-point win over Pepperdine. Allen Crabbe scored a career-high 33 points in the win over Pepperdine, recording 24 of those points in the second half. Crabbe averaged a steady 15.2 ppg last season but the offense in the early going, has funneled through him. After two games, Crabbe is averaging 30 ppg, shooting 60 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from behind the arc. Point guard Justin Cobbs is both a scorer (12.6 ppg last year) and distributor (5.0 apg last season) and has taken his scoring to another level early on as well, netting 22.5 ppg on a scorching 69.2 percent from the floor.
The Pioneers earned their first win over TA&M-CC by a margin of 17 after falling in their opener to Iona. Chris Udofia (18.5 ppg) led the way, scoring 17 points and pulling down seven rebounds in the win. Udofia was a Preseason All-Sun Belt First-Team honoree, after being tabbed a First-Team member, as well as the SBC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011-12. Brett Olson (11.5 ppg) added 11 points against Corpus-Christi, hitting three shots from beyond the arc. Olson finished second in the Sun Belt last season in 3-point accuracy (.456). Chase Hallam (10.0 ppg) was named to the All-SBC Second Team a year ago, and will be a key contributor this year as well.
California's key players have been spectacular this season, and the Bears should earn their first win on the road against a Denver team that has yet to find its identity.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: California 77, Denver 69
