GAME NOTES: A pair of 1-0 teams will square off at Reed Arena in College Station tonight, as the Texas A&M Aggies play host to the Troy Trojans as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

Troy opened the new Trojan Arena is style on Friday night, as it connected on a last-second shot to take down Mississippi State, 56-53. It was the fewest amount of points the Trojans have allowed since March of 2010, and it was their first-ever win over the Bulldogs in 10 meetings.

Texas A&M also got off to a fast start to the season on Friday by dismissing Louisiana Tech at home, 71-59. It was the Aggies' 12th straight win in a season opener, and their 13th straight in a home opener. They hope this is a springboard for a bounce-back season as they finished just 14-18 in 2011-12.

Troy and Texas A&M have never before met on the hardwood.

The Trojans held a 32-22 advantage over Mississippi State in the opener at halftime, but they gradually let the Bulldogs back in the game, and the contest was tied at 56-56 in the waning moments before Emil Jones knocked down a mid-range jumper to give Troy the thrilling victory. Jones finished with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting and he also grabbed a team-high eight boards. Jones's running mate at guard, Hunter Williams also scored 10 points and drained a pair of three pointers. Tevin Calhoun was a spark plug from off the bench as he led the team with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Although Troy shot just 21-of-58 (.362) in the game, 10 of those field goals came from beyond the arc, keeping with the theme it established last year by draining nearly nine treys per game. It also did a great job containing Mississippi State out on the perimeter (4-of-16 on three-pointers) and forced 16 turnovers on the night.

Texas A&M quickly fell into a 5-0 hole on Friday night, but then went on a 10-1 run and never trailed for the rest of the game. The shooting effort was modest at best, as it drained just 43.6 percent of its field goal attempts, but it marched to the foul line 24 times on the night, hitting 18. The Aggies also forced Louisiana Tech to shoot just 35.7 percent from the field and commit 15 turnovers. Elston Turner connected on 6-of-13 field goals, including three three-pointers, en route to a team-high 15 points. Turner, last season's leading scorer with 13.8 ppg, is expected to be one of the SEC's top performers this season. Fabyon Harris added 14 points and dished out four assists playing in his first game for A&M after transferring from junior college in the offseason. Kourtney Robinson recorded 12 points and six rebounds, and he is expected to be a mainstay in the frontcourt with last year's starting forwards Khris Middleton (13.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and David Loubau (11.0 ppg) now departed.

Troy proved with the win over Mississippi State that it has the talent to compete with programs from major conferences, but doing so on the road is another thing entirely. The Aggies will feed off the energy in the building to move to 2-0.
