GAME NOTES: The Maryland Terrapins return home to the Comcast Center in search of their first win as they host the Morehead State Eagles.
This will be the first meeting in history between these programs on the hardwood.
Morehead State picked up a 77-74 win over LIU Brooklyn on the road in its season opener. The victory was the first for the program's new head coach Sean Woods, who came to the school after leading Mississippi Valley State to the NCAA Tournament last season. The Eagles' win over LIU Brooklyn snapped the Blackbirds' 27-game home winning streak, which was the second longest in the nation.
Although Maryland is 1-0 to start Mark Turgeon's second season, the Terrapins took a lot away from their 72-69 loss to the defending national champion Kentucky Wildcats. Maryland lost by just three points despite shooting only 33.3 percent from the field. The Terps put the clamps on the Wildcats down the stretch and limited UK to 6-of-25 shooting in the second half. Maryland will be looking for its 35th consecutive win in home openers.
The Eagles followed the senior leadership of Milton Chavis in their opener as he produced a career-high 24 points and went 4-of-6 from three-point range. Chavis was a role player last season with an average of 7.9 ppg. He has a chance to prove his outburst to start the year was no fluke versus the Terps. Devon Watson was the top scorer out of the backcourt with 13 points and four assists. Kahlil Owens brings a lot of energy off the bench. He managed to finish with 12 points and 12 boards in 27 minutes of action. Junior Maurice Lewis-Briggs added 12 points in his debut with the team.
Maryland has not been able to land top tier recruits in recent years after once being one of the most heralded programs in the country. Turgeon may have a superstar on his hands in sophomore Alex Len. The second-year center finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks against UK's Nerlens Noel, who is considered the best player in this season's freshman class. Nick Faust added 11 points and James Padgett tallied 10 points in the win. Xavier transfer Dez Wells went just 2-of-12 from the field in his debut, but he showed with the Musketeers that he can light it up.
Maryland is on its way back to the supreme ranks of college basketball. The Terrapins may not be competing for the ACC Championship this season, but they should be able to cruise past their mid-major competition.
