GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers look to continue their perfection when they take on the Texas State Bobcats in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout at the Sullivan Sports Arena.

The winner of this contest advances to play the victor of the matchup between Loyola Marymount and Oral Roberts. Both losers will square off in the consolation bracket.

Texas State suffered its first loss of its 2012-13 campaign last Saturday after coming up just short against a Larry Brown-led SMU. The Bobcats finished the game 40 percent (26-65) from the floor and 85 percent (17-20) from the free-throw line, but allowed the Mustangs to make 49.1 percent of their field goals and 24-of-28 at the charity stripe. Texas State defeated Fordham by 10 points in its only other contest versus a Division I program this season.

The 49ers are off to a 3-0 start after posting a 70-49 victory over the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday. Charlotte held its opponent to 31.1 percent shooting from the floor, including an 0-of-10 mark from 3-point range to cruise to the victory. This season marks just the ninth time in school history the 49ers have won their first three games to begin the year. Now in his third season as Charlotte's head coach, Alan Major has compiled a 26-37 overall record.

This will be the first meeting in history between these programs.

The Bobcats have had no trouble lighting up the scoreboard this season. They are posting 82.2 points per game while holding their opponents to exactly 10 points less. They are also averaged four more rebounds per game and have 16 less turnovers in three games. TSU received a huge boost from Blinn junior college transfer Joel Wright in his first season with the team. The 6-7, 225 pound forward leads the team with 22 points and 7.7 rebounds per game after finishing with 28 points and five boards his last time out. Senior Matt Staff is close behind with 16.3 points and seven rebounds per outing. Vonn Jones is dishing out a team-best 3.3 assists per game.

In their win over Lamar, the 49ers attacked the basket consistently to hold a 40-26 lead in points in the paints. Charlotte's bench scored just six points less than the Cardinals' entire roster. Its defense was very good as it forced 22 turnovers to prevent any comeback attempts. Denzel Ingram led the 49ers with 16 points. DeMario Mayfield scored 12 points and Terrence Williams added 10 points. Chris Braswell scored nine points. Darion Clark and Willie Clayton led the 49ers with seven rebounds. Braswell paced the squad with 15 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Charlotte looked to be unstoppable versus a weak Lamar team last time out. The Bobcats suffered their first loss of the season, but it came courtesy of an undefeated opponent. Texas State has been scoring with ease, but the 49ers are one of the top defensive teams in the nation with a scoring defense of 53.3 ppg. The 49ers need to control the tempo to avoid their first loss.
